You know Andy I watched this review years ago before I got my R9T and I decided then and there I was gonna buy it. Honestly I studied the bike beforehand even then. But your review so direct and well explained summed it all up for me. Since I knew you are an experienced rider, I was certain you were telling it like it is. So now that I have the bike for 2 years I can tell you thanks man, because I love every moment with my bike in my life.

Yeah there is a good reason why they are so popular! I too never thought I'd go for a boxer engined machine (didn't fancy all those poking out cylinders) but the low centre of gravity makes such a difference to the ease of handling....

Are we not just in the best time in biking history for an amazing selection of motorcycles to ride across the board. It is so hard these days to stick to one bike and say that you will never change. I know there are a lot of people that get board with hearing how good BMWs are but they certainly know how to continually raise the bar and excite! Great vid TMF and what a stunning day to be out on 2 wheels 😎👍 David

Great review as ever. I agree that the front Brembos are fantastic; the best front brakes I've found on any bike. It makes the ones on my 2016 GSA feel feeble in comparison. Odd, as I think (but not 100% sure) they are similar, if not identical, componentry.

After having checked sport bike (well, sport bike-ish, a 2011 CBR600F) off my list I figured I'd get a 800-900cc bike to keep for a couple of years before taking the final step up to this dream bike of mine. I test rode a few different bikes, and the ones I fell for was the KTM 790 Duke and the Yamaha FZ1N. Then a relatively fair priced 2015 NineT turned up, and yesterday I went to test ride it. All I can say is that it checked all my boxes; great power, surprisingly agile and tons of character. Not to mention that the insurance is almost half the cost of the other ones I mentioned (in Sweden). I really wasn't planning on getting this bike just yet (price is definitely one of the reasons), but I ended up riding it 120 or so miles home in way to thin clothes (thank god for the heated grips). Looks like it needs a new battery, but after the ride home yesterday and running different arrends with it today I couldn't be happier. A plus is that everyone seems to love its looks (and sound), even people who aren't usually into motorcycles. Needless to say, I'm expecting to keep this for a long time. My biggest concern now is how to keep myself from spending too much on accessories, the list is already getting longer.

As usual another brilliant review. I'm always delighted when I've sat down with my morning coffee, poached eggs and toast to find a new review (or one I haven't yet seen) by you. Lovely bike, and although you can take off the rear subframe it would have made sense to have the option of just removing the pillion foot rests and hangers (like on the old R1100S) and keep the seat hump.. Now, time for another coffee and find another TMF review :)

FYI and others having just bought 2018 R nine T. although rear brake caliper is badged BMW it is brembo , it says on the back, they went through a phase of wanting to brand the brembo calipers BMW but hasn't worked out, use same on the XR as well but when stiock gone will be back to branding with brembo. 2017 there was a few changes, wheel design, forks are now adjustable and rear shock upgrade as well as the new clock design, these are most notable but a few other minor tweaks. Thanks for the review, it helped me decide to test ride and buy. sadly though the GSA 2017 I think is going to new home. not my cuppa tea, nice bike but not for me, the 9T suits me much better.

Hi TMF, great review as always. I’m interested in these modern retro oxymoronic bikes; any chance you could do one of your great reviews on the Honda CB1100EX? That’s the one with wire-spoked wheels and harks back to the original CB750 - a beautiful looking machine imo. Keep up the good work.

Great and Liked video! Very professional. I thought since I want to buy a bike next year, I thought what is the availability of used R9Ts. 2017: Nothing. 2016: Nothing. 2015: Nothing. 2014: 2 motorcycles and one of those machines was in another state! 1 used R9T in New York City! 8 million people! So either BMW is keeping production down or no one is selling their bikes... Can't wait to try one on the road. :-)

I have a Bonneville T100 and went to test ride this RnineT and in beginning it felt so jerky coming from the smoother Bonneville but damn this thing is punchy! Honestly I was a bit scared in beginning, the way it moves and even while shifting gears it has this sort of punchy response but after a km or two I felt comfortable and the ride just became smoother. Maybe someday I'll buy this one as my above liter class motorcycle.

Nice review again! I took my new R9t urban gs out for the first time this weekend, first sunny days with plus degrees in Sweden for a long time. The R9t was loaded with character (in a very good way) but I was surprised it pulled so hard and wanted to go. Feels like it want to go little hard:) But I learned you need to be careful when you shift down, specially if it’s slippy, I got surprised in a corner when back wheel slided due engine break. Will need to adjust, my other 1200cc are more gentle. That said I like, just something to keep in mind:)

@Lokyr00

How are shaft drives less efficient? Power or MPG wise? I've always ridden dirtbikes with chain drives and they constantly needed lubing, adjusting, sprocket replacement, etc. Considering an RnineT as my first road motorcycle.
@Peakwanderer
@Peakwanderer 6 жыл бұрын
Compared to a chain in optimum condition less power gets to the wheel with a shaft, not something I'd worry about with this much power. 3 to 5 hp difference is what I've seen quoted in the past.

As an owner of an old airhead, I feel that BMW has re-captured the feeling of those old boxers with this R-series model. The gearbox is soooo smooth, but the only thing I don’t like is how low the bars are; the first thing I’d change is adding a set of Heli Bars. I love the distressed number on this one, looks the business!!!

Dear Missenden Flyer, If you ride bikes a second time it would be fair to do the R nine t scrambler some justice and ride it with street tires. In my opinion this changes a lot! THX for your work!

I also noticed that this was a repeat of last years review. You are however spot on the scrambler mode; the ride is terrible and harsh, also you miss the tacho and gera change indicator. I have an RnineT 2017 and would agree with all your comments. I love it as a bike it makes me smile very time I ride it. Ironically was going to get a Ducati Scrambler but it was too slow, too small and Ducati were unhelpful. Whereas BMW Allan Jefferies Shipley West Yorks could not have done more to help me. I also dont like this paint job, I went for the brushed aluminium tank.

Another great video and a fantastic bike, although you have tested this one before with the blue tank, the nicest one in my opinion. I have a 14 bike and looking at this one I would say they have made small changes, the clocks are different and the red bolts on the top of the forks suggest you can now adjust front suspension. My only complaint about the bike is that it's really small, it would fit my wife a lot better than me (5,9)and she loves it. Thanks and keep up the good work.

THEN kit it out to my preference...I want spoke wheels and the rally seat/rack from the GS model add a windscreen and Nav system then the little things to make it "my" own!

I agree about the fuel gauge, but the other thing that baffles me is why BMW didn't put tubeless tyres on the Classic until 2021. They're the only two things I can find wrong with mine, it's a cracking bike.

TMF, You're always so well spoken and obviously have a gift for communicating your thoughts and observations clearly to the viewer. That said is it necessary at speed in potentially icy conditions to point at the clocks and then reach across the center to the opposite dide to point out the shape of the mirror stems? Only thinking of your safety mate. Trust in your superb oration skills and keep the mits on the grips. Cheers.

Lovely bike, would be nice to see you review some old bikes sometime..like a BMW F800ST or Suzuki Bandit, things that people might want to buy as their first 'big' bike but cant necessarily afford a new RnineT...I know I'd tune in!

The only 2 wheeled machine I've owned with a fuel guage was a 125 scooter back in my L plate days, 8 years ago, since then I've just always kept track via the distance I've travelled. Works quite well. Even my KTM 990 SMT doesn't have a fuel guage, it's a bit cheeky since it was marketed as a sort of touring machine, a low fuel light is all I get on that bike, a guage would be nice as depending on how I ride I can get under 100 miles per tank in anger, or closer to 180 if I'm cruising.

Good review TMF. I have a 2015 RnineT and although it doesn't have a fuel gauge it warns when you have reserve fuel left which is I think 5 litres and then it counts your miles done so for me it works just fine

Thanks for yet another great review. I’m a big fan of yours and I picked up some great tips from watching your vids. For example I now have some ACF-50 and a bike dryer 😉. I agree with most of the things you said about the R nine T however I have to disagree on the suspension part. I personally think the suspension isn’t all that great. My back did hurt after riding the bike for more than one hour. Many R Nine T owners, including myself, changed the suspension (front and/or back) to an Öhlins or Wilbers. I know the suspension changed from 2017 on but still it isn’t great. Especially if you compare it to your GS 😉. Also there are some differences between the 2017 models and the previous ones. Suspension, meters (gauges), canbus system, ECU, ASC, Euro-4, non-removable dB-killers, etc... Anyway, keep up the good work. I’m looking forward to your future posts! It’s funny you compared it to the Bonnie T120. I also was torn between these 2 bikes. I did a testride on both and without a doubt I knew the BMW was the right one for me. I have to admit the Bonnie is more beautiful but once you start that boxer engine anything else is irrelevant. I love that engine! Anyway, thanks for posting all these vids and giving your honest opinion. It’s much appreciated.

The RnineT was on my wish list when it originally launched, such a beautiful bike with a wedge of power and torque. Very expensive though. I'd still like to demo one at some point, but it is no longer on the wish list. I was tempted by the Kawasaki, but ended up putting a deposit down on the Street Triple 765 R instead.

Excellent video. I sorely wish I lived in such a beautiful place. I have long been a fan of the r9t and the 2021 models look nicer than ever. I recently bought a Ducati Scambler and commute for 40 minutes through central Paris and outskirts and the Ducati seems as good as it can get for the purposes but...I am tempted to switch to the r9t, just because it is so beautiful, well crafted and reliable. Have you tried it in dense city traffic? I spend half the time filtering and I'm concerned that the extra weight and width would be a handicap. I also have a couple of gripes with Ducati: the shift between first and neutral is pretty rough and it really heats up. Have you had any gear issues with the r9t? I think that the 2021 range has also made improvements in that area.

Only BMW I ever liked the look of was the R90 s from the mid seventies in the orange sunburst with the bikini fairing. They used them for production racing back in the day, great looking bike, I would never own a BMW but it was one of my favourite looking bikes along with the Z900 and Z1000 and not forgetting the Ducati 750 Imola replica.

Hi TMF, well this is the video I’ve been waiting for. That bike is just beautiful and yes it does need a fuel gauge....actually or does it! My old retro biking days didn’t include a fuel gauge just a reserve tank and that was perfectly fine unless of course you were travelling around the world. The question is.... a new kitchen ...........or this bike? I absolutely love it. A fantastic review, well ridden and thanks a lot. Kind regards.

Great again TMF. Question. I rode a Moto Guzzi that did the engine left-right shimmy and the front wheel felt like it oscillated a very subtle floaty snaking motion below 30mph. Ever noticed that on these boxer BMs?

The rake is also different from the 2014-16 models, the bike is supposedly more stable on the freeway at the expense of cornering ability. And the 17+ gets ASC traction control as an extra, not available on the earlier models.

Good review. I've tested this and the Urban GS. They're the only bikes I've tried in 20 years that could tempt me away from Triumph (though I'd probably keep one). Hope you get to try the Pure. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I had a lone Pure for a month as my R9T was delayed. Its not as nice a bike less is not more in this case. Finish dosnt look the same, forks are no adjustable and harsher like the scrambler. The sound is also differnt as silincer is single pipe on Pure. Also no headed grips etc

Well that's disappointing. I preferred the sound of the single silencer on the Urban GS and I didn't think it suffered from cheaper suspension, although it does have longer travel than the Pure. Oh well, another test ride needed.
