My 2016 X1 MSport is fully loaded and beautiful Estoril Blue (to look at), with less than 4,000 miles after 4 years. Replaced the radiator at less than 2,000 miles. Recall finally (with the fix and the developed parts) addressed earlier this year for the side post airbag reinforcement, and the tail gate did cause injury to me the owner, to no fault of my own other than purchasing this my first and my last BMW. My 15 year old Camry is way more reliable (never replaced anything except oil and filters and a belt) and seems to have more overall room. Only noted visible scratches to the BMW facia and trim of car were from the BMW dealer, as I hardly drive this SAV. Dislike the engine start-stop feature which can be disabled, irregularity kicks in.

I'm considering a used 2017 X1 as a reasonable but comfy second vehicle for roadtrips and the winter (AWD). Like others have mentioned the price points on these with 30-50k miles are under 20 grand. My concern is overall cost of ownership. I currently have a '14 Volvo S60 and had a '06 SAAB before that so I accept that things simply cost more. I do take absurd care of my cars so that combined with a little luck has allowed me to dodge a major/costly repair ($1000+).

I just bought a 2018 BMW X1 and until you have warranty there is no problem because as soon as you have a problem in the car you can take it to any bmw in North America like if you bought the bmw from Ontario you can send it to the Alberta BMW dealership and they will service it for you!!

I love watching your videos. A lot of information packed in. I was considering a Mazda CX-5 when I stumbled across 1-2 year old BMW X1's at a similar price point!!? I particularly love the panoramic sunroof in the X1. If you have a chance, I'd love your perspective when comparing the mazda and BMW specifically regarding reliability and maintenance costs. I dont switch cars often, so I'd be in the next one for 5-8 years if all goes well. Thanks!

This is EXACTLY the situation I'm in now. Price points are so similar, also prefer the pano roof...frankly I love the X1 much better in terms of styling but so worried about reliability I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger. Also finding a lot of the used BMWs have less than ideal CARFAXs - lots of leases and auctions with missing service information. CX-5's available in abundance but good X1s hard to come by, at least in my region.

Check caredge maintenance costs. Over 10 years bmw costs $17k to maintain compared to $7 of the mazda cx5. It also has a significantly higher rate of major failure. So even if it doesn't break down, regular maintenance is expensive

I guess BMW learns from previous iterations. Knock on wood, my 2020 has none of these issues. I bought it as a CPO a year ago and I saw the entire service records, nothing went wrong with it for the first owner. Nothing to report from me. I got bimmercode to fix all my complaints... mostly nanny alerts and sounds, and to remember my driving mode settings. I like my X1 a lot. Great for a family of 4; great to give to your teenager later... Lots of places to put things. It's fun to drive, feels light and easy to toss around. Gas mileage for me is 25ish mixed. No drama. Super easy to get in and out for everyone too. Mine has heads-up display, and can have all sorts of proximity warnings... if you turn them on. And it remembers your settings. Oh, and it has a nice app on your phone that you can see if you left your windows open.. or find your car, or see your mileage, etc. There's a lot to like.

I own BMW X1 18d XDrive, 4/2012, N47D20C engine.. You mentioned N47 engine.. Yes-it is problems with chain-but these problems are created from BMW recomendations.. I replaced chain, when i bought that car-at 91000km (about 56800miles) REASON WHY: TOO LONG service intervals motor oil&filter- recommended by-BMW! Now i have no headache with that car-i simply love it! Change oil myself every 6000km/about 3750 miles... Because short distances. Love it also, because i dont have so much electronic-because-who need all this things.. ;-) I have GARMIN for navigation, updated twice a year for free.. And thats all.. And recipe for new engines: If your engine have chain-you have to change oil more often! Very simple.. Also VTG oil, front, rear transmission... etc.. If you car is not under warranty... :-) :-) If someone is not fun of BMW, or just doesnt like that brand-dont buy.. There is a lot of others.. Well-i am fun of BMW... ;-) Thanks for sharing your experiences about newer X1, i like...

This is an awfully long list for a premium car. Those mentioning 60K miles with no issues, no brand should have issues these days with under 100K miles, let alone 60K miles. BMWs without a warranty are to be avoided unless you can afford unexpected repairs in my humble opinion. It’s not just about the engine in most modern cars. They are basically computers with wheels.

He pointed out problems that different owners of BMW X1 have experienced. That doesn't mean if you buy a BMW X1 that you are guaranteed to experience all these problems. I have a BMW 328i now and in Seattle I used to get oil change for $99. Sounds like a lot, yes, but it takes 6 quarts of synthetic oil and doesn't need to be changed as often. I have done my own oil change. Costs about $70 for materials from FCP Euro, it's not too expensive.

@@ECPP after a month of having the 2019 X1 for a commuter car I would say it lives up to the ultimate driving experience. Not only is it the most nimble sav bmw has to offer, but everything was crafted for functionality. Easy to park by a long shot compared to an x3 or m4. Cutting lanes in traffic is effortless. Theres always more room then expected to maneuver through traffic. Not a fan of extra electronics just the driving part and this X1 delivers that. More than enough power for passing capabilities on the highway. Not sure if the M package suspension makes a difference to some, but for me it absorbs all the minor bumps like a luxury car should. No complaints and no problems. It's the ultimate commuter car. New Japanese cars if they could do it right it would be an X1.
