2018 Ford Expedition MAX limited with a 3.5L ecoboost and a whipple EcoBeast upgrade. This one has 500+HP. But because it’s an early 2018 model it is starting to rattle at cold starts and is getting annoying, before I rip the engine apart to replace cam phasers I thought I would try a few things.

Add Lucas stabilizer, 20% and the rest oil. It's s meant to prevent dry startups. I put that in all my cars for years and I've never had any motor problems. There's another guy on KZfaq that made a video with the 3.5 ecoboost and it solved the start up chatter.

you can just do the flood clear trick and buy yourself some time. hold the throttle to the floor and press the start button it will crank continuously without firing until you lift off the throttle. it allows the oil pump to build pressure in the phasers.

Rattle goes away once engine is warmer and oil pressure is high enough to keep the slop off the timing chain. Wait until it's fully cool and see if the rattle goes away. Best flush is BG EPR and amsoil engine/trans flash. Motor flushes at parts stores are weak

Technology...IDK it seems since lower ZDDP oils we have cam issues G.M Ford dodge. I have a Taurus S.H.O 3.5 ECOBOOST. I use Redline ester 5w-30 high ZDDP and I use Redline ZDDP additive to Bring the ZDDP values to 2500 ppm. Redline oil also has a insane Moly value. ZDDP is a Must for turbo protection so I'd rather change catalytic coverters every 5 years or so than mess with turbo/ timing chain/ cam issues. Just my 2 cents😊

I used to get a similar noise in my wife's 2007 Expedition. Those 3V 5.4s are notorious for making all kinds of noises. I ditched my 2005 after 150K miles. Didn't want to deal with it anymore. Anyway, I stumbled upon Hot Shots Secret when I bought my 2017 F250 6.7. I wanted to get the best lubrication products out there. Well, I used their Stiction Eliminator in a fresh oil change and ran their FR3 in the next oil change 5K later. The cold rattle went away and that pin chatter around 1200 rpm is almost all gone. Really weird. Also, I notice the oil stays amber color the whole oil change now using Hot Shots Secret products. I was sold when I heard and saw that.

Ford is saying to use only synthetic blend oil for their turbo engines. I know. Sounds crazy but many reasons shown on YT. But none of this fixes the lack of oil to the phasers on start up. The trick that fasttoyo recommends below works, but most of us r too lazy or impatient to do that every time we start up a vehicle. Maybe Ford should make it the only way these 3.5s start up.

I spoke with a Ford engineer and he said all turbo or supercharged engines should run full synthetic. He suggested using a heavier oil, for instance 10-40, if the engine was making noise. Although not a fix if mechanical wear was bad. I had the ecm update on my F-150 and it now cranks a bit longer before start up. No noise

Since my last post on this subject 2 years ago, I've purchased a 22 F150 with the 3.5l It came with the new cam phasers and SS exhaust manifold and a few other internal updates that are std issue now. I don't know if the phasers in the 22 150 are the same as the replacement phasers they install as updates to older model 3.5's pre 21. Seems like they would be the same, but can't be sure. It now has about 14k miles. No chain slap. There might be a few micro seconds of delay before ignition. I'm using the syn blend and talked to the mechanics at the dealer who also said, yes, only syn blend. I have been using full syn on all my vehicles for the last 50 years. When I was a aerospace engineer, I worked with several scientists that worked on the original teams that invented full synthetic oil. It was used in Europe for over 20 years before coming to the US. They showed me all the comparison data between non syn and full syn oil and all the methods they used to make the stuff. So I'm a firm believer in full syn even though I only used it on everyday family vehicles that are driven modestly. I understand how superior it is over even the best non syn racing oils. But when the majority of Ford 3.5l motor engineers, that have millions of miles of test data on which oil was best for this 3.5l engine with the new phasers, I have to go with their recommendation of using the syn blend. And I have my theory why it is used in this particular application. @@anthonybrincefield2812

@@ginginthing 80,000 miles on my 2017 F-150,3.5 and knock on wood it lasts. I use synthetic in my vehicles and when I saw the previous owner had used it since 5,000 miles I stuck with it. Part of the reason ,when I had the opportunity , I asked the Ford engineer about Synthetic. He also mentioned that he felt recommended oil changes are too long. 5,000 miles is the limit for me on our vehicles. I should mention that my Harleys have been quieter when I tried a conventional racing oil.
@ginginthing
@ginginthing 8 ай бұрын
Great data. The recommendations I got from the scientists that developed synthetic oil made a lot of sense to me. Since the oil will not break down under "normal" street use for at least 30k miles, which some people interpret as leaving the filter on for the same mileage, it still collects dirt which we know causes damage. They recommended that the filter be changed every 3k miles and the oil be changed every third filter change, or about 9k-10k miles, just to be safe. That's what I've been doing for 50 years, and none of my vehicles, many of which had close to 200k miles, have had oil any appreciative oil consumption or lack of compression. So for me, syn oil works far better than std oil. As far as these 3.5s are concerned, with the long cam chains that have far more slop than timing gear chains, and are mounted almost vertical, the synthetic oil with it's very low viscosity will fall down to the bottom of the chain when stopped much faster than std oil. Although the synthetic oil forms a better molecular bond to the metal that keeps fiction very low on start up compared to std oil, it doesn't provide a cushion of oil on start up compared to when the engine oil is up to op pressure. So I'm guessing that the Ford engineers had discovered that using the thicker cold viscosity synthetic blend oil sticks to the top areas of these chains and the new cam phasers longer than the pure syn oil does. This helps during the first second of startup to help prevent chain slap. And they might have also modified some of the oil veins leading up to that area to supply more oil on startup. On the Harleys, this same principal might be in play there. The thicker oil (even when hot) might be providing a sound dampener for chains that are incased in a bath of oil. @@anthonybrincefield2812
