Which vehicle is more worth your dollar for going off-road? The Jeep Wrangler or the Chevy Colorado ZR2? Is an SUV or a truck better for not getting stuck? Yes, we know we got a Wrangler Sahara and not a Rubicon, but deal with it.

The ZR2 for much better highway manners than any Wrangler ever will have even without being modified a Wrangler just isn't meant for the highway LOL. I haven't driven a Colorado or Canyon yet, but now that they've released the new Ford Ranger, I'm gonna have to say if I were in the truck market for a smaller pickup the Colorado or Canyon would be in my driveway. The new Jeep Gladiator pretend pickup looks horrible FYI, I've seen 2 of them and they're really terrible looking.

@@davidmembrila229 Wranglers are incredibly capable, however they're not these god tier vehicles people seem to think they are. I owned one, modded it, it's like lego for adults. Stupidly expensive, and depending on the parts added, unreliable. They're toys for the retired or wealthy, as those with families and mortgages likely can't afford the bill to play.

I mean if personally take the ZR2 and just put 33’s on it and it will be very capable and just option for the bed mounted spare ZR2 has room for all the hogs and deer in the bed tied more then the Jeep and seats more people comfortably and has every creature comfort option I need standard as is ZR2 with 2 Locke’s sounds like the best deal to me

Good video!! The complaints are week when compared to someone who took these brand new vehicles and dove into the mud with them. Most of the videos out there don’t bother getting them this muddy. Fun video to watch although I think the ZR2 is a better choice.

I like both of these a lot. Drove the ZR2 gasser about a month ago and was impressed with the ride quality & nimble character vs. a full-size truck. Truck looks great in person; taller than expected (in a good way). I’m going with a Sting Gray Rubicon ... will cost about $10K more than the Colorado, but I like the added interior space and felt that I could live with the Jeep long-term while I don’t really need a truck; borrow my brother’s F-150 easy enough.

IT's a really capable off-roader for sure, Jeeps are usually good, Wranglers better. Obviously the tires are Highway Terrain, so this is a huge disadvantage on this slippery trail, but if it had a more rough A/T or M/T, the lighter weight Jeep would be great. IT really depends on what you need. If you are also driving city, and you are in crowded city, the smaller Jeep is better. IF you drive highway commuting, I think the Colorado will be more comfortable, used as a hwy cruiser. Of course if you need to load stuff in the back, obviously there is no need to compare. I think they will be pretty close off road with same rubber, with the Jeep a bit better due to approach angles and clearance.

I see that now, and I honestly didn't before. It's clear that the viewers didn't like this approach. I tried to work with what I had, but I'm sure I could have come up with a better concept to do a more relevant test than street tires in the mud. Plus the fact that I messed up some facts doesn't help. I tried to work with what I had, but when it's not correct, it's not correct. This is an apology and a promise to work harder in the future to get it right.

Pure off road, gotta be the JL. Cheap lockers available, narrower wheelbase, better angles especially with bumpers, excellent shocks. Problem is, the JL is going to cost north of 60k by the time you have quality shocks, lockers, and rubber installed. The zr2 problem is that there isn't much you can do to help it out. Slightly taller tires and a body lift.

The Sahara is the only wrangler with available AWD for all season on-road safety, the Rubicon the only wrangler with dual lockers for off road. You can’t get both AWD and Dual lockers in one wrangler. The ZR2 has both AWD and dual lockers (like a Gwagon). That was deciding factor for me.

I know people are mad about no rubicon or no mud tires and I agree for off-road test...BUT also consider that Sahara was still more expensive than Colorado and rubicon is even more so. Stock ZR2 provides everything you need for cheaper. Not to mention trucks are more practical when towing and loading cargo. If you are going strictly for off-road capabilities then go all out for the rubicon. But the ZR2 is better in so many others ways, especially if you need a daily.

Here's my beef: Most of these off-road comparisons talk about mud, mainly. I live in the desert Southwest, where we almost NEVER encounter mud. What we care about is sand, boulders, mountains. So, as far as off-road chops go, this is pretty much useless.

I like how people are comparing the 2 subject vehicles when it comes to hunting lol. Most people know that Jeep folks aren't off roading to hunt, they off road to....well....off road. For me personally, I'd love to have both. The ZR2 can tow a lot more and would make a great expedition platform when properly equipped and you can put your deer in it too! The Jeep is a great weekender off road vehicle. Throw your tent in the back along with a cooler of food and you're good to go.

I come to this channel for videos that are made by people that know what true off-roading is. That means using the proper vehicles for the proper application. The choice to knowingly use the wrong vehicles was a poor one. The Colorado is more of a desert truck than a mud crawler, and the Jeep is essentially a pavement princess like you said. Perfect example of quantity over quality. Not going to maintain a good rapport with the off-road community making videos like this.

Per Jeep.com, the selec trac full time 4wd has a 2.72:1 low range. Maybe in Canadia it's different? Even so, with its 3.45 gears and auto, the crawl ratio with a 4:1 tcase would be 65:1 not anywhere close to what you state. In reality, it is 44:1 since it has a 2.72:1 tcase and 3.45 gear ratio. Even the Rubicon auto has a 77:1 crawl ratio. The Rubi manual has an 84:1. You should really check your shit cause this is egregious.

Well, I have a bit of an explanation for you, though you're basically right. I should have fact checked this better. Period. On the Jeep media website (I don't take my info from the consumer site), the low-range ratio for the optional MP3022 SELEC-TRAC transfer case was listed at 4.0:1. I was also surprised by it, which is why I sound so pleasantly surprised in the video. I just called the Jeep PR rep and he is in the process of changing the official information now so this doesn't happen again. Now, to your point, even with a 4.0:1 it wouldn't equal an 80:1 low range as I stated. You're absolutely right. I didn't factor in all the elements, and instead of thinking it through, just spit out that number. And I did see that the Rubicon had two different ratios, but I felt it was a little inside baseball to go specific with them. Clearly viewers like yourself want those details and I'll watch for them in the future. And no, my ass is not talented enough to distinguish every different low-range ratio, especially with crap tires in those conditions. If that's enough to disqualify me from presenting off-road videos, then I guess you needn't watch in the future. But I promise to work harder to get the facts, and provide entertaining and informative videos. And finally, it sounds like you'll be happy to hear that this my last ever video for Off-Road.com. I have joined the team at The Fast Lane Truck and will be reviewing and informing on that channel from now on. Hopefully you'll follow along, but if not, thanks for watching and go get muddy!

Why would you use low lock with stock gearing , stock tire diameter, street tread, in the mud? No wonder you were stuck all the time. In the mud you need wheel speed to keep the tread clean and momentum to keep moving. Low lock (esp 4-1) offers neither. By the time the trans shifts enough times to develope wheel speed you used up your available traction. You want the highest gear available that still has enough torque to spin the tires quickly from a low rpm....

Hypothetical mods shouldn’t win you comparisons. We could always lift the Chev and put bigger tires and change gearing too. But even vs. The rubicon overall bang for the buck I go with a pickup. Jeeps are better off road because of their geometry But if I drove off road full time it would be on a quad or a side by side. Trucks are just so much more practical.

So we take the top of the line off-road package ZR2, and pit it against the most street like packaged Wrangler? Ok. It isn't just the lockers or sway bar disconnect the Sahara is missing, nor the tires. These are really two different kinds of off-road machines. The ZR2 accels at pre-running or fast off-roading on dirt roads or desert, while the Wrangler is more of a technical off roader. (Again, when not equipped for suburbia, like the Sahara.) Still, give me the Sahara and I'll put a lift and 35" AT or mud tires on it, and it will walk all over that stuff with no effort. Fun test, though. As far as dollars spent? My old 2008 JK Wrangler Rubicon would dance all around both of these vehicles on this course. You can pick up an 07 or 08 Rubicon for 14 grand, or so, leaving you with enough for a down payment on a house.

This comparison is not as worthless as people are saying, that jl did almost as much as the zr2 without lockers and with highway tires, when you take the angles into consideration the jl is better you can buy lockers and beffier tires. Or just buy a Rubicon model, and it pains me to say this because I'm a die-hard gm guy, but the angles and clearence are holding the zr2 back

I certainly could have come up with a better concept for this video than street tires in the mud. When you have to apologize for the vehicle so much, I see now that it makes the video feel very pointless. I used what I had in the best way I could. By sticking them in the deepest mud I could find! But that alone does not make an off-road video good. Noted and thanks for the feedback.

Edysin Simon i cant lie the zr2 to me is just better. The looks are better the power options are better (ls3) and the locking diff but the jeep has great ground clearance and a great frame but lacks in power and style so for me zr2 is the champion

Power line trails, using atv equipment on full size rigs and not having proper recovery gear, 4:1 in a Sahara, not using both lockers, apples to oranges, no bueno.

The Zr2 not only crushes the Jeep but it also dominates the Tacoma. The only truck that compares off road is a Ram Power Wagon but those are an easy 10-15k more in price....

Sorry dude. You're wrong. Zr2 has 2 lockers. Sahara has none. Both seat the same amount or people but one can tow more than 6k lbs and still put a deer/elk in the back without getting the carpet dirty. Resale value is the only way the jeep wins. You didnt even talk about the ride quality or the shocks that much. For an offroad page. You should get a host that knows what hes talking about
