I enjoy watching your videos. I am not a repair person; I just get a kick out of watching. I suspect brain surgeons are jealous of how steady your hands are! I've seen some of these mother boards and I cannot grasp how you are able to solder such tiny components. Your dry humor gets me laughing out loud! Thanks for sharing your videos.

I wonder what the long-term prognosis would be for a board that had that amount of corrosion, would it last, would it be stable, would some components be slowly internally corroding, it'd be interesting to see it's overall lifespan now....great work and good humour as always Alex !!! 😎👍

I tried to repair a laptop from the previous owner who had chicken soup all over the laptop. I replaced the laptop and tried to get it working again. I've disassembled, cleaned and reassembled it 5 times, the last time I've soaked it under water and dried it in the oven at 70⁰C for 3 hours. After all that it still wouldn't turn on but the power led flashed 10x, it didn't do that before. I replaced the battery and it turned on! I use it as a cnc control laptop in the shed where humidity can be quite high but it works still after 3 years. It took me days to repair it so Northridgefix would deem it a no fix for sure. But as a hobby it was 8nteresting to do and it paid off in the end.

the oxide between components could introduce several problems; resistance, rectification(acts as diode; old diodes were called metal oxide diodes/rectifier), I think it might even turn to metal oxide transistor say if oxide is between 3 components. But oxide effects only external connector connections nut the inside of basic/discrete components.

@tektonikdubstep3290
@tektonikdubstep3290 Жыл бұрын
You should watch more board repair vids. Temps don’t always really matter because it is mostly about technique. I’m almost always max temp unless I’m in a sensitive situation but it’s all about how far you are from the board and technique. But air flow definitely matters but still can be subjective based on technique. Good luck!

I wouldn’t trust that repair I’m afraid as there could be more corrosion building , unless you put it in ultrasonic cleaner without us seeing , seems the perfect t candidate for a clean and reflow. Even distilled vinegar would have neutralised the area and prevented further corrosion that perhaps is minute and under chips from coming back. Otherwise good repair as always. 👍

So a dumb question. There seem to be a lot of water or liquid damage cases. Why doesn’t Apple and others make laptops more liquid-resistant? Like a 5 cent rubber membrane under the keyboard area? Ten cents of clear spray over the pc board? This sounds doable. Why doesn’t it happen?

My urge would've have been to clean all with IA also, then remove the heat sink to get a peek under it and clean, and remove at least that one chip to see under it and clean. Then reflow. Then reinstall the chip(s) and heat sink. You know how long that would take? Big Boss is the Boss of all Bosses yes, but Alex is the King of Efficiency and knows how to get 'em in and get 'em out. Good job!

I was wondering the same thing. I've fixed maybe 10 different phones and laptops by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol. The ones that were successful had chocolate milk, fine dirt (dropped on driveway in the rain and left for hours), wine, soda, potato soup, beef barley soup (used water first then isopropyl for that one). I couldn't fix a laptop that had hot engine coolant spilled in it. Owner was looking at the manual to fix his car when he opened the hot radiator. The coolant actually dissolved some of the circuit traces! I also couldn't fix an iPhone found in a snow pile by the road after the plow went through. The salt from the road corroded the connectors and disintegrated the pins. And there was a Samsung Note 9 that went swimming in a lake and drowned. Lol. Under 6 feet or water for 2 hours and it was turned on. Two chips for the camera power supply were destroyed (there were pieces out if them). According to my brother who worked for Lucent some years ago, that's what happens if moisture gets into ICs. They tested the ones they made by exposing to high humidity to be sure moisture couldn't get in due to manufacturering defects. I really appreciate Alex's videos. Watched a bunch, ordered low melt solder, solder wick, and flux from Northridge Fix and replaced the HDMI IC in an LG TV where all HDMI ports stopped working. Couldn't have done that without watching Alex.

what are the chips generally made of that they don't burn or melt when you apply that much heat?
@igrewold
@igrewold Жыл бұрын
read any datasheet of surface mount IC or component like resistor or cap the reflow (heat) is 200~250'C, and the exposure time is in seconds can remember how long exactly maybe 20 or 60 until the solder paste melts to hold the component But they do burn if the temp is too much & the exposure is too long Then this indirect heat flow does not provide full heat as in hot air gun say 500'C the heat on board maybe less like 250 or 300 see wikipedia for Heat transfer
