i like to use roses metal which has a melting point of 96C. After applying on both sides most off the times its sufficient to heat one side of the cap with soldering iron the other side will liquefy by its own from the heat. but you have to remove it afterwards

You can remove the capacitor without the soldering tweezers. You add lower temperature solder to both connections, and lift one side, and then the other.

You may bridge the sides of the capacitor with a proper calibrated wire and use a normal soldering iron on the middle. it melts both sides

Sorin, for challenging desoldering jobs I bought a little ChipQuick kit ((SMD1 NL). The kit contains some gel flux and very low melting point alloy (I think it is liquid at 90C). When mixed with normal solder the joint stays liquid for a long time. Just touch the soldering iron to the ‘ChipQuicked’ solder joints and lift the component off of the PCB. Simples 👍🙂 Very low melt solder must be wicked off the PCB after use but it can save a lot of hassle with challenging desoldering situations. Totally unsuitable for soldering a component though. Alternatives to ChipQuick are available but check that the melting point is very low. I have yet to use a pair of soldering tweezers that I liked. Most that I have used seemed underpowered for anything but the least demanding of tasks.
@Pandemonioum
@Pandemonioum 2 ай бұрын
I fully agree with the comment above…as far as I know Chipquick melting point is 58C and it accelerates the desoldering procedure to “difficult areas” a lot….20 years ago I was using Gaugemaster GM1 at 73C with approximately the same results.

Add solder to both ends of the cap before using the tweezers...
@jimle22
@jimle22 2 ай бұрын
That is probably unleaded solder and it has to get really hot to melt. The leaded solder on top facilitates the melting of the unleaded solder from my experience.

When desoldering a component from a board using tweezers i am much much faster when i add a little bit of a fresh lower melting (150°C) solder on both tips. That lowers the desoldering time to a few seconds. I am sure a standard snpb solder will work too.

To "How to desolder a capacitor?": It's called "Deformation Professionelle". Being so deep into Air Guns that you can forget how soldering works. 😂 Simply alternate the soldering tip between the 2 sides. Second option: Have a second soldier iron ready and use both of them. Costs really nearly nothing.

Over the years I've found such tweezers tend to be less useful than I wish they were :( ( even in this video, that was 2 minutes of tweezer application :-o ) These days, I've got a nice fine pair of pliers that I've filed down to narrow points, using that tool I remove capacitors quickly and cleanly. Of course, you have to know the PCB traces that you're located over, because if you don't, it's easy to end up tearing away the traces and creating more trouble. The trick is to push down and apply sideways force so that the cap shears off from its endcaps, usually works very easy with already damaged caps. You see other techs like Jessa Jones do this a lot on things like iPhones where it's near impossible to get hot tweezers in.

It was only 2 minutes because these tweezers are weak and Sorin didn't lower solder melting temperature. Only 40W per one side, 80W total. It's like using 2x 40W soldering iron. Of course 40W is extremely low power for such a big ground plane. You need at least 80W for ground. Weller also quite a bad compared to JBC. Also the tip size matters, if you have too small tip, thermal capacity will be smaller. I usually use just 2 soldering irons at the same time. In this case Sorin could of helped GND side with soldering iron as well. Also always lower soldering temperature first. This lead-free has very high melting temperature, even if you use normal 180 degrees lead soldering wire it helps a lot. Even better if you use like 140 degrees low melting soldering wire. Maybe even these tweezers could of soldered that easily in that case. But of course if you have no space it's different story, in this case Sorin had quite some space.

I hate solder tweezers. If you use a fine nozzle on an air gun and move it back and fourth rapidly across the cap and connector, the connector will never melt while also heating the board. You can use the same method to change any plastic connector whithout having to use air from the underside.
