A slightly more diagrammed shift-by-shift look at 2018 NHL Draft prospect Quinn Hughes (#43 LHS LD from the University of Michigan Wolverines [NCAA]). In the video, we'll take a little deeper dive into some specific plays both offensively and defensively with regard to things he can correct, but also things that he sees and excels at.
Hughes was the 7th overall selection by the Vancouver Canucks.

Another awesome video, can't wait to see more! I don't know how much space you have to fit players i would like hear what you think of Petrus Palmu. From what i have seen he seems like a really polished all around player he doesn't have an insane shot or anything but i think he has very good play making skills. I would like to hear what he does wrong and the reasons why we may not see him in the NHL unless our injuries start stacking up.

the nhl dont like small players... palmu is 5'7

dsrevo79 the league has been changing to smaller skilled players and he weighs 180 at 5' 7 and does a good job of using the lower center of gravity to fight for the puck around the boards.

Micheal i was hoping you could clear up a question for me. What is the difference between a offensive defensemen and a defensive forward as to why a coach would make the first player a defensemen and the second player a winger or center? They are both good on both sides of the ice so would it just simply come down to one being slightly better at defense? This is referring to Hughes as he has very good stick handling and skating so why was he made a defensemen instead of a forward? Is it simply because he is slightly more responsible defensively or is there more to it?

Great question Snekster. As a coach for a while now myself, I always moved my best player to defense. Sometimes against their will even. My best skater, visionary, passer and smartest player (or best combo thereof) plays defense for me. The reasons are many: defensemen cover much more ice than any forward position, more minutes, more responsibility, face tougher situations, they're the kingpin of zone exits and entries...wingers, for instance, play in a very confined space, have the least impact on the game both offensively and defensively. Obviously, I'm making sweeping generalizations, but this is generally the deal. Speaking specifically to Hughes, his best asset is skating: give him room to rev it up - don't have him starting from scratch where the defense already is...have him get a running start. As a defenseman, he has the opportunity to carry the puck - tough to do as a forward because the forward rarely makes retrievals. When the other team dumps it in to your zone, how many times does your winger pick it up? Right. About zero times. Why rely on another touch to get the puck to your best player? Let him make the right decision for the first place. Don't let the Vice President make laws haha Also, the defense that a forward plays is far different than a defense a forward plays. Just starting with how you approach it. Forwards are often behind the puck, defensemen are over the puck. Great questions though, Snekster, thanks for watching.

Quinn Huges is a generational talent as a Defenseman.. u cant take puck off him on forechek... deceptively good on skate..

The AHL is clearly the best path for him, but he told management he wants to play in the nhl, and if he can’t make it he wants to go back to Michigan. A sheltered 3rd pairing role while running the 1st PP unit with boeser horvat pettersson and hopefully juolevi, but probably edler is probably better for him than going back

Boy, it's awfully close isn't it...I'm a big fan of both players. I'll give Makar just the slightest edge, but mostly due to him being older and being just a little bit more well-rounded.
