Suzuki SV650X - The SV650X isn't massively powerful, its not particularly light but there is most definitely something special about Suzuki's latest retro styled twin.

They need to make an "R" version of it. Straight up same as standard sv650 but better suspension and brakes. Leave the rest alone.

Good to see a guy used to 2 wheeled jets get a kick out of the SV. Love the sound of these bikes, even with stock exhaust. My '23 blue SV with the 4 piston front brake actually stops rather well. Taking it on an 800 mile jaunt next week. Not the latest and greatest, but I love it anyway. I know it will be running like a champ in 10 years.

I bought a new leftover 2017 sv650 non x about 6 weeks ago. I was debating between the SV and the MT07. Very happy I chose the SV. I put on a Holeshot/Corbin seat, Delkevic 18 inch carbon slip-on and a Vagabond fender eliminator. What a great running/feeling bike that I just love the looks of. Excellent review of the X btw.

Always been a big fan of the sv650 since the very first one , I had a 98 600 hornet many years ago and my pal had an sv 650 we swapped on every ride and I always got off of the sv with massive grin on my face, mega fun , so forgiving great for wheelies too , gearbox is typical Suzuki, spot on , as for brakes . Some goodridge hoses and decent pads sort that out they have really got this bike spot on and they have done from day dot . Great vid as usual sir chops . Keep up the great work

I love the bike, but I would say that as I own one. I agree with the mirrors not not being useful , I have changed to bar end mirrors, added a scorpion exhaust, red rim tape, tail tidy and a belly pan. The bike now looks great in my mind

@mikew.197 6 жыл бұрын
Did you do anything with the mirror posts left behind from the stock mirrors, or did you just leave them? I want to go with bar ends on my SV, but I think the old mirror posts sticking up with a hole in them would look bad. Thoughts?

I was all set to pull the trigger and get the CBR650R after your recent review, and now I've stumbled across this little gem of a review. Gonna have to have a go and make up my own mind & try this puppy out. I actually like it's looks. One of your funniest videos I've seen yet. The Edgar thing was great. Loved it. 👍

Nice work Chopsie - I completely agree that there's an awful lot to be said for getting full use out of a smaller engined machine on the roads vs limited use of a big engined machine - great grins to be had, although as you said, this particular machine doesn't do it for me on the looks front - hate that front headlight cowl, presumably some people like it. I'm going to be getting my hands on the standard SV650 in a fortnight and your review of this, it's ugly sister, has got me quite enthused....:0)

Yup I think it's one of the reasons I like supermotos too that ability to unleash them fully on the road. I think you will love the SV, the drop bars on the X do give it an extra sporty feel. Looking foward to seeing what you think to the stock version 👍

well i've had the sv650x nearly two weeks now. Got quite confident on it but not overly so. Just been out for a ride in Waitakere ranges then out to Huia near the mouth of the Manukau harbour. The roads were wet in places so i took it easy but did push a bit in dry parts. In peak traffic the bike is great at lane splitting, so good one has to remember you're likely to get stopped if too crazy. Also the user assist works great and is very difficult to stall. In Auckland there are time restrictions on most bus lanes, but T2,T3 and bus go first light always. Getting close to 300 kms per tank and after run in i expect to get more. Using 91 Ron as per the manual. Gearbox is great just a bit of rear wheel yanking motion if put into second too early. Great bike and the v-twin was really the clincher, along with this review and others. Thanks again

Good review - interesting take on the SV650 model.Returned to biking on a 05 SV650S, I found it to be good in most respects,the only niggle was bar-ends kept vibrating out.Bike was bought with the A2 restriction module in and I never bothered to replace it with the full power one.Since gone down the VFR750 route but the SV was not noticeably lacking in grunt up to 100 mph as a comparison.It tended to catch any crosswinds on motorway riding which made things interesting but as a bike it does exactly what it says on the tin I think,hard to fault it.

I have a 1986 Yamaha SRX-600 with 45,000 miles. I put 40,000 on it in the four years I've owned it. Basically brought it back from the dead. It's just so fun I sold my 2011 Ninja 1000ES and really don't miss the power. The SRX is a single cylinder, kick-start only, 4 gallon tank, with a curb weight of 287lbs wet! This new Suzuki is about as close to my bike as you can get. I'm thinking about trading in my 2018 MT-07 (which has 11,000 miles on it) in on the SV-x. THEY ARE JUST SO FUN. The MT-07, IMO, is a bit blown up in its praise. These are bikes that you can learn to put a knee down on and feel confident because you can achieve it in a more relaxed gear and slower speeds, on a comfortable mount. Knowing your gripping the road and can push it harder each time. I've owned a DL-650 so I know the engine here. Pops a wheelie in first and second by just blipping the clutch and throttle. A LOTTA FUN PEOPLE!

@rylandpeters8982 4 жыл бұрын
why ecu flash it?
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 4 жыл бұрын
@@rylandpeters8982 Because Euro4/5/6 etc. is not the friend of internal combustion engines. Removing the front and backside of restriction requires the ECU to be recalibrated to deal with the change in gaseous flow. Also programmed into the stock ECU these days is ignition, fuel, and throttle restrictions designed to prevent excessive noise, excessive pollution (ie. power, acceleration, and fun), and generally designed to prevent owners from involving the corporation in litigation (ie. power restrictions in lower gears, power/speed restrictions at high rpm, and especially speedometer error set to +6 to 8% fast).

@EmpyrealSun
@EmpyrealSun 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your input! I have only been able to sit on it so far, can't find any test ride around here. I am after more forward lean than a let's say a standard SV650 or a Yamaha MT-07. But perhaps not pure supersports leaning style, I think my wrists won't take that anymore. Also I'm after a twin engine configuration (and if parallell twin it has to have a crossplane crank since I can't stand standard parallell twins). Few choices around for what I want. I guess I might have to buy something more upright and switch out the bars, but if possible I would like to avoid that. Anyhow, thanks again!
@paulsven7923
@paulsven7923 6 жыл бұрын
You will have to find one to try as it is more forward than standard sv650 but little less than a supersport. So it may actually be what you're after. Also just have been looking at clip on risers to get them up by 50mm as I like the bike just not the riding position.
@EmpyrealSun
@EmpyrealSun 6 жыл бұрын
You are right, there is no substitute for actually trying for myself. Will have to figure something out. I have however had two test rides on the new standard SV650 and I really like the little bike! Ticks most of my boxes for what I'm after these days. Just not the upright riding position, although that of course is more comfortable. But comfort is not everything, the feeling you get when you ride is more important to me and the kind of leisure riding I do. Regarding your case, I don't know much about clip on risers, but that should be able to work out I suppose? As long as there is enough cable length to do so.
@samiam8779
@samiam8779 6 жыл бұрын

well went to Piha beach today where their filming 'High Road' and clocked 1000km, so i opened her up. Fun factor 100%.Did 160kph in sixth and still wanted me to give it more.of course i refrained. slightly wet roads(winter here) and spun the rear wheel on center white line in 3rd.it got quite crossed up but held on to it. Wheel stand in 1st and 2nd, not intentional she just did herself. if this was a 1k i'm sure i wouldst be writing this now. This girl just makes want to ride her more, so i am.LOL

You didn't intentionally wheelstand a Gen 3 SV? yeah right, there's no other way of making the front come up, you have to drop the clutch, because they will NOT power wheelie, particularly if you're talking about only doing 160kph in 6th, I'd still be in 5th on my 2017 SV, and going by the speedo the bike will do 210-220 depending on factors like wind resistance, road gradient and your weight.

Suzuki 'mechanically brilliant' [apart from brakes]. I had an original SV650s in blue. I loved the sound of it at idle; so much so that I used to wash it in the back garden and then sit outside with a cup of tea and watch it dry off. It ended up wedged under some armco barrier whilst trying to get first ever knee-down - I was fine but my beautiful SV was toast. Sniff

Looks like quite a nice machine! Doing my a2 at the moment, didnt get on with the Suzuki Gladius V twin that the school have, I so much prefered the cbf600 for the inline 4 engine. I was looking at an sv650, but the gladius put me off. Feel like maybe I should try one before I judge. If you like the retro, let me know and you can have a bash on mine this year if you like :P KH will be on the road soon, and the everyone who rides the fizzy falls in love lol

Thing that lets it down looks wise for me is the conventional forks, but thats me being petty :D No electronics is sticking to the old SV650 heritage. My son had a SV650 as his first big bike after passing his test. Simple ecu restrictor on the fuel injected models makes it a 5 min swap to full power. The beauty of the v twin is it still has decent low down torque when restricted. Saw that x model at the dealers the other day and thought it looked really nice. The exhaust is a bit cheap but Suzuki probably done that as they know most will probably change it anyway to make the bike their own. Why pay extra for something you're going to bin anyway. It could do with a nice belly pan and, as it's a sv650, I am sure there are ones out there that fit from previous models.
@LambChopRides
@LambChopRides 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, exhaust is the first thing changed so who cares keep it cheap. Yeah engine power is very good low down and still has some go at the topend. Its just a very nice package overall, apart from the brakes :-)

I am always a bit reluctant to fall in love with a reasonably low powered bike because am quite hefty at over 6'2" and over 16st (yes, I have to lose some weight) but this little bike looks like so much fun that I actually feel like I want one of these. The looks are not over done, it just works well for me. fantastic job; Suzuki, at this price it's v good value. This must be a best seller . Good review by the way, thanks.

70 hp is by no means "low powered" unless you're used to nothing but the fastest accelerating bikes. The SV platform in general is fantastic and the proof is in its popularity. I'm 6'5" and 255 pounds (~18.2 stone) and have no issue with power or keeping up until the speeds are approaching 100+ on the highway. I'm torn on whether or not I plan on ever selling my SFV650, though there are quite a few mods that I want to make to transform just how the bike feels to ride. Cartridge forks, fully adjustable shock, Brembo brakes...
@WolfgangVonKempelen838

Thanks for the info, and I do love the bike. I heard from a friend that the engine is pretty reliable and bullet proof as per normal for a Japanese bike. I had a Street triple 2013-2015 ( not so reliable and good as written in practically all bike magazines. They praise the Triumph into heaven; I have to differ I'm afraid; good ride and v fast but reliable ? No, plus poor build quality) riding a new z900 (not the retro one) now. The reason I mentioned the power is because I commute to work throughout the year unless it is snowing or just horrible, and cars are getting faster and bigger and for me it is good to know that I have and need the power to pull myself out of the danger zone during heavy traffic or to avoid drivers who didn't notice me (Yes I am wearing Hi-Vis but still). Some car drivers don't really like it when they are wasting their time stressing themselves whilst us bikers; carefully but relaxed filter by. I drive a car as well and I know the different workings and the dangers that bikers are facing, but a lot car drivers just drive cars and they have no idea what it is like to ride a bike. I think it would be a good idea to include some theoretic lesson time to educate learning car drivers about these facts/deferances; it might improve the relationship between riders and drivers. Ride safely amigo ;)

Im a heavy guy (heavier that you by prob 45 pounds), but like the reviewer said the power is really where you need it on the road. I have the 06 version, and the new one has added a few HP. Its just a great torquey engine, twist the throttle and it pulls ahead pretty quick through 100mph, even with me on it.

@@zakw4110 For the price, I can't think of a better bike. It maybe basic, but it's tried-and-tested, very reliable, well put together, very easy to work on, and it sounds fantastic. I bought a Yamaha Ténéré 700 during lockdown last year because basically it was the only bike available! It's a great bike and the CP2 engine is a peach. I like the riding position, its road presence, but I find it too top heavy and a bit too big for my needs. It's just not the bike for me, so it's going. What a relief it was to get back on a naked with 17" wheels! I can't believe how quick the SV650 is and it's perfect for filtering through traffic, I just wish I had bought it last year instead of the Ténéré.

I've never owned one but I really think I should. You just can't go wrong. Plus Suzuki have fixed the front brake for 2019 by upgrading it to an opppsed 4 piston caliper from the original 2 piston sliding one. Should hopefully make a real difference. Could do with shedding a few kilos too but not a deal breaker for me personally. That V-twin engine is worth a few extra kg's at least.
