My beloved 4Runner story: Since I was living in the country in 2003, I bought a 1987 manual 4Runner with 120k miles for $3kUSD which NEVER GOT STUCK in any situation. You had to lock the hubs to put it in 4-wheel drive, but the best part was that the rear top of it came off to make it an SUV convertible. My three children were small when I owned it and they LOVED that vehicle. It blew a head gasket in 2007 (the only repair it ever required in the 4 years I owned it) and as the guy I sold it to towed it off, my youngest son was crying because he felt like we were losing a member of our family. And really, we were. I still miss that 4Runner. Love your videos and congratulations on 100k subscribers. Next stop 1 million!

I work at a small Mechanic shop and my brother owns a 99 4Runner and I recently drove a 2017 4Runner TRD PRO and I remember walking away from it thinking Toyota maybe a boring car company but they make exciting SUV’S (not the current RAV4) now I’m not a big SUV person I love to drive sports cars and that kind of stuff but there is just something nice about driving a Toyota SUV knowing that you can conquer the road and not look like a tool

My 4Runner story: It was a snowy December and I was picking up my parents at the airport. I was driving on the high way going around 60mph and I went over a bridge. After I passed over the bridge my 1998 Black 4Runner Limited lost traction and I rolled it 1 time in the ditch. Luckily it landed on the wheels. The highway patrol came and asked if I was okay and if could I drive the car to the nearest exit to keep off the highway until a tow truck comes. I got in it and drove out the ditch and half a mile to the nearest exit. Since then I’ve bought a Toyota FJ Cruiser and became a loyal customer to Toyota SUVs and trucks.

Great review guys. But, I have to add that I just bought a TRD Off Road and it has all the features of the TRD Pro except the Bilstein shocks and cosmetic touches. The interior is exactly the same, It has the 17" wheels, taller softer suspension, Crawl control, Terrain select, diff lock, A-trac etc. and was only $40k. I'm betting I can upgrade the shocks if necessary for a lot less than $10K. For me, the TRD OF was a much better value and still gave me all the features I wanted.
@andrewjarvis7777
@andrewjarvis7777 2 жыл бұрын
Came to comments to say same thing-ish. Main draw of the Pro I think is the unique color/s it has. Nearly everyone that's not a soccer mom eventually replaces the shocks and end up with a bit better than the Bilsteins anyway. Got my '21 TRD Off Road RIGHT before prices skyrocketed due to various shortages for $42k \O/

My wife has a 2008 4Runner that is cosmetically beat up. Runs solid. We went to test drive a 2018 and IT'S THE SAME EXACT SUV! Still solid and lots of good stuff but the engine and transmission definitely need some reworking. Also, the interior and the fact that it doesn't have a power liftgate (at $45k) is ridiculous. We're keeping the old one. No need to upgrade.

Great review - I own a 2017 TRD Off-Road and absolutely love it. As expected - not great on gas (550 km/tank) and a little sluggish off the line - but still peppy enough to merge onto the highway safely. Other than that I've absolutely loved the truck so far and also loved the depreciation curve. I started out looking at used 4Runners and was able to justify a new "demo" based on the slow depreciation. Nice review guys

So, to clarify a few things. Canucks are the only ones who can get the TRD Pro with a sunroof. In the US it is unavailable. Also, the TRD OffRoad (or Trail, which is the exact same truck up until 2017) offers everything that the Pro does (locker, crawl control, etc.). Premium trim upgrades cloth seats to heated Softex and adds mirror defrosters. But, you can option the Trail or Off Road with something that the Pro does not have: KDSS. KDSS is a hydraulic system that links the sway bars rigidly during on-road driving, to limit body roll and corner much flatter than standard, smaller sway bars. During off-road driving, the sway bars are uncoupled for better articulation. It's essentially a hydraulic sway bar disconnect. It's not offered on the Pro. It's better to think of the Pro as the exact same thing as a TRD Off-Road Premium, except you get some cool exclusive paint colors and you cannot option KDSS. Oh, and the Pro edition TRD coils and shocks can be bought retail for around $1000. To me it wasn't worth $15K of markup for $1K worth of upgrades. I picked up a Trail Premium with KDSS for $36K. Now I have plenty of money left over for any upgrades I want. 😁

The TRD Off Road doesn't have the wheels, tires, skid plate, shocks (also 1" higher in front), front grille, or interior tid bits.
@shoogledonk
@shoogledonk 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Leynes Gold true. I still feel they're not worth the dealer markup or premium price over the ORP. If you don't wheel hard and insist on only OEM gear, the Pro is the way to go. If you don't mind adding good tires and skids, save some money and get an ORP.
@lizzardmax
@lizzardmax 6 жыл бұрын
TRD off road does have a skid plate just not that aluminum one, the off road does have upgraded wheels and better looking ones in my opinion, tires are easily swapped and are an expendable wear and tear part, I added bilstien shocks with a 2.5 lift all around for 1k way less than the TRD Pro upcharge. KDSS is something that can never be added to the pro.

Great video I loved it! Only thing I would add is the "TRD-offroad" formally Trail Edition is actually what the trd pro was based off of, no you don't get the grill, wheels or Bilstein shocks or coils, but the crawl control, locking diff etc. is standard. Also the Trail has the option for KDSS a system from the Lexus SUV that the TRD Pro does not, do what I did, buy the Trail and use the money you saved to build your own Pro

Love the snowy reviews! Great to see Ontario, I lived in Marathon for 3 years! Had a Toyota single cab 4x then. Only had one 4R, a 95. Not nearly as bad ass as the Pro. Keep up the good work!

A few years ago me and my dad did a road trip in a 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser the first car I ever drove and holds a special place in my heart. It's great to see the 4runner carrying the lineage of the landcruiser and being more of a landcruiser than the new landcruiser is

How are you guys getting the sweet moving exterior shots? Drone? You guys are tearing faces off! Better than Doug, Better than Matt, Better than Brian, Tyler, Kyle, Jay and Parker, that dude isn’t even in the same universe. SPs FTW! I’m a weird dude. I like top end GT cars optioned out but with manual transmissions. There aren’t too many of those in the modern world anymore.

Born and raised in 4runners, learned to drive in one, and no surprise i own on now, they never die and can tackle any terrain. I own a 2016 trail (now called off-road) has all the off-road stuff a pro has just not the badging and shocks, which is good for us who mod our trucks. Mine has a 3in lift and eats any terrain and absolutely love it

We own the the 2015 limited and 2016 TRD pro. Very simply, the beset SUV and Daily drivers We've ever had. With that said. The Limited is far better than my TRD PRO in road behavior. It's far more composed, and it's got self adjusting suspension that will level out the car on turns, hills, and when I tow my trailer. The Limited model has nearly 0 drop in suspension ride height. That goes for also loading the truck with cargo or people. My TRD PRO is another story. It's got much softer suspension giving it a much softer ride and response when compared to the Limited. It also sits about an 1 inch higher..maybe 2. I'm not really sure but the difference isn't that noticeable particularly when the Limited suspension increases it's height based on weight and terrain. The TRD PRO also has a lot more drop when I towed my 4k trailer on it..I dropped by some 4 inches. Same trailer on the limited experienced at the most 1 inch. Also the the Limited is an all time AWD. you can't turn it off the TRD Pro is a 2wd with AWD on command. You don't have crawl control, like the TRD PRO, but the Limited model will non the less crawl, but it will do it on it's terms. you don't dictate the terrian, it does it for you . Gas mileage is awful. However I don't care. I didn't buy it for it's mileage. I knew exactly what I was getting. Just don't let those bullshit number of 16 in the city and 21 highway make you think you'll get those. realistically you're going to see 12 city and 18 highway combined ( assuming your going over 55) I get slightly better mileage on the TRD PRO about 15 city and 23 highway..Both have ample horsepower. And yes, I love the transmission 5 speed. Learn to utilize sequential mode and it'll be driving an 8 cylinder beast. It will hold the gear you set it to as a max will not shift, unlike 99% of vehicles on the market. So in busy bumper to bumper or NYC traffic, Ill set it to second gear and i'm able to engine break to a stop or get off the line quicker and not deal with LAG.

Was about to say where's the visor test, but you threw it in at the end. Was on vacation in Florida for a week and saw a ton of 4runners even though they don't need it for the snow so I thought that was funny, non of them were towing anything either. I read an article that states the buttons are usually larger to enable those of us 4runner owners to easily press the buttons with gloves on and such since we're likely to be in climates that require them. Also, my gun fits perfectly near the cup holder slot. I'm sure others do it too!
