But to be honest, if he broke or roughed up anything, he'd pay for repairs, and also I think you could list the damage as a feature and it might increase resale value. "Visors - custom scuffed by Doug Demuro", some car folks might buy it specifically for that.

Honestly, when I drive cars with lots of electronics I never seem to use most of them. This is a prime example of a vehicle that's not trying to show off and sell units by adding every little feature to justify value. This is the kind of vehicle you aren't afraid to drive in the worst snowstorms and down the roughest roads while the other SUVs are stuck in a garage somewhere.

Here is the benefit of owning a 4runner. 200,000 miles later. Everything is still working. You don't need to pay $500 to have a key replace. Technology is great but it has made every car disposable now. Also the 4runners feel solid and does not feel cheap. Ever been in a Cadillac? At 100,000 miles everything feels like its about to fall apart.

The people who are buying 60k JL wranglers care about technology. Toyota has handicapped themselves. Test driving a TRD pro Vs my new Wrangler was like going from a brand new Honda to a 2004 Honda. I am a massive Toyota fan boy and always owned Toyota or lexus but there is no comparison. The 4 runner doesn't even have the new Tacomas level of tech which is already behind. The 4 runner has always been my dream SUV. I got one new in 2015 and I couldn’t be happier. Took it off road a few times and it drove like magic. The best part about this vehicle is that it gets better as it ages. Based on the history of this vehicle, it may last me 25 years. A friend of mine is waiting for his 96 runner to die so he can get a new one but the truck refuses to die. It is an indestructible tank. While it is true other models may be more fun to drive, they won’t last as long.

@@mark4tesla You buy a 4Runner to last for 20 years. That's what you're paying for. You can get two $25k Chevy Trax for the same price, but they won't last the same amount of time. If you want something cool and different that you switch out from every 3 - 5 years, this is probably not the vehicle for you. My last vehicles over the past 30 years were a 93 Chevy v6 owned for 13 years. 98 Chevy Lumina 10 years. 06 Pontiac G6 for 11 years. My 2020 4Runner should last me the better part of 20 considering all the other vehicles I owned were well past their half-life when purchased. And, if I ever sell the thing, it's still worth mostly what I've paid for it. Had it almost a year and only put 2,250 miles on it. So yes, it will lats me forever.

Vehicle Virals its not necessary but it is convenient which is why its there. And if it weren't for manufacturers doing that then the whole auto-industry would stil be stuck in the dark ages without advanced technology that have now become standard like abs, traction control etc...... Similarly you may view them as unnecessary today but they are undoubtly convenient and may be a necessity down the road later and they are definitely necessary to push technology forward. That said however its not bad to stick to just the bare bones. Each has its benefits and applications. But in that case, as someone else mentioned they shouldn't be charging you 50k for it unless they can offer high end luxury to go with it etc.

I recall laughing as I rolled down the window and telling my wife that it was one less piece of electronic technology I’d have to replace someday. I recently priced a new 4Runner and came out under $50K. With the pre-owned models priced similarly, I’m planning to buy a 2022 model later this year. My youngest kids are 7 year old twins, and I’m confident we will be taking them to college with that 4Runner in 10 years as well as helping them move into their first home with it in 20 years. He calls it “ancient”-I call it “classic”! Worth every penny, in my opinion.

But, think about this: by building such a long-lasting vehicle, they may not be losing as much as much as you think: if this truck is going to be running for 3x as long a competitor's vehicle, even if it has 3x fewer problems per lifetime of a competitor's vehicle, Toyota won't be losing much. Also, because the parts last longer, aftermarket companies have less of a demand to create the parts, letting Toyota keep most of the parts market to themselves.

I've been looking into getting a third gen 4Runner, and clicked on this video just to see what the modern ones are like. In the older models I have seen, the 4 runner autos did have straight line gear selectors. I assume they purposely changed to a zig zag pattern for the reason you mentioned, to avoid someone accidentally hitting it and screwing up the car/trucks innards. Never noticed the difference until you mentioned it.

Doug I have a TRD Off Road. I have to say the back window opening is its most fantastic feature. You were right that the airflow with the window down and a moonroof open is fantastic. Especially those cool nights. Just need to remember if you see wet on the road to get that window up or your inside will be a wet muddy mess. But I will say that it is also great for large loads. Although make sure you put a towel over the window lip so that you don’t scratch the inside plastic or back paint if you have something hanging out.

This car is so simple that I've got one for my wife and kids... will safely bring them from point A to point B in a stilysh way, and also you can do some adventure trailing on it, not just mall crawling. Efficient? I really don't care about that, 4runners are cool!
