Meet the new BMW F850GS Adventure. We were among the few journalists to attend BMW Adventure Days 2018, where we tried the new F850GS Adventure and the R1250GS Adventure. Most part of the route was off-road, on a loose gravel, so it was a lot of fun and we got a lot of insights.

Thank you for your insightful comments. I also found the quick shifter, even on the r1200gs, only works if you’re a spirited rider and shift above 4,000 rpm. The BMW gs range needs a DCT option as badly as the Honda Africa Twin needs a speed control. Few adventure travelers enjoy riding balls to the wall all the time, but most enjoy the scenery and relaxed experience of enjoying new remote places. I really have to commend BMW for their product development and bringing us incredible options.

Oh well, should be just another hot, sunny Christmas day on the beach with a few coldies to make the day special. @@DriveMagRiders thank you for the reply. To me price diff is not that big either. I just think 850 is way too close to 1250 in the weight and center of gravity category that BMW just missed the mark here in my opinion for a middle weight bike. KTM 790 adv s with fuel is 420lb, which is where I would expect a midsize adv to be.

@@unrealbikers5405 It's a shame, but I think this bike comes with a manufacturing defect. I have observed several videos where the bike loses stability in the front wheel and causes falls, it seems that this new design and construction of the F850GS does not have the stability that has the F800GS and say that it is due to the change of location of the gas tank, I would not buy it, I would not buy it, it does not inspire confidence, the TRIUMPH TIGER 800 XCX / A is much better on road and off road

Hi there, great review. I look forward to all of your BMW reviews. I own a 2018 R1200GSA with lowered suspension and lowered seat - I am also 174. I rode 17,000km this year to south America on the bike. It was super comfy and fun on roads -- but on some off roads, since I am an average off-road rider and it was heavy for me if in sand, mud or difficult terrain. Im going on a 25,000 km ride this summer through Asia and am thinking about buying the F850GSA if it makes sense. Do you think the weight savings is worth the switch to the F850GSA from the R1200GSA for off-road or do you think the bikes are similar and not worth the change? Your help is useful for me.
@DriveMagRiders
@DriveMagRiders 5 жыл бұрын
I would better use that money for some off-road training :D I think that there's a big difference if you compare the basic F850GS to the big R1200GSA. Between the F850GSA and the R1250GSA there's a 20 kg difference and a 21 inch front compared to 19 on the R1200GS- which you can obviously feel, but you really need that on tough terrain only

Strange, I thought the quick shift was much better on the F850 GS than on the R1250GS. Especially the lower gears on the R1250, it was terrible unless you were in a very narrow power range. Maybe it was just that particular bike I rode.

@@paulvanhout9695 I went for the standard model. sometimes a scratch my head and ask myself why I did this choice. It seems that for a novice offroader the standard might make it easier for offroad use. Its just annoying that you have to carry extra gas jerrycans. What confuses me is that in the review they do mention that the adventure is heavier than the standard but at the same time they say that its not a big issue and is good for offroad. Kind of contradicting themselves.

Good review with lots of views from others. One thing that seems common about all bike reviews however is negative comments on wind buffeting. Bad news guys, it’s a motorbike. You are out in the elements and wind is going to hit you somewhere. Next it’ll be “rain drops and a fly hit me”. 😳 Apparently you don’t get wind buffeting in a car 🙄 Easy way to stop talking about this...get on a naked bike with your adv helmet and sit at 200 km/hr for a period. When you return to normal speeds you think you are wrapped in cotton wool and your expectations are reset. Harden up guys...😁 I toured Norway in the 80s on a naked Norton in snow and sleet...now let’s talk about buffeting (and cold). 😏

You get a Chinese engine for a German price...amazing!! I’d be interested in one of these if (a) the top spec was $1800 cheaper, (b) it had proper adjustable front forks, (c) it had 100 - 105 ponies. The poor wind protection can be fixed wan MRA deflector, or possibly a new screen. Mode switching on the fly is great.

Am I the only one who finds the new exhausts ugly? They look like they are attached at the last moment of the fabrication and taken from another bike!

It's a shame, but I think this bike comes with a manufacturing defect.

Outstanding job. What is it about BMW and noise though? All of their bikes sound awful.

Thanks. Which one you dislike? All of them? I think that the old-school boxer in the R nineT sounds quite good..

@@DriveMagRiders I've heard one of those R nine Ts that sounded okay, not sure which one. I guess those have some attention on the exhaust. Still... compare it to a Triumph scrambler...

Strangely enough I read nothing about the major problems that BMW has had with the development as well as the quality problems of the engine which is made in China (!). The problems seem to be solved, however, I would scratch my head twice before buying an F850. BMW; made in China? :(
