The 2019 Mustang 'Bullitt' is a movie car homage that goes back fifty years. Whether or not you consider that to be a good thing, is entirely up to you. It's got 480HP, 20 more than the GT, special paint and wheels, and a bunch of Bullitt badges. But hey, at least it's nice to drive!
Ford provided travel, accomodations in San Francisco, a dinner, the vehicle, fuel, and insurance for this review.

Matt, I don't have problem with the review of the car per se, and the movie itself was decent for '68 but this line from yopur R&T review: "Even the 12-minute chase, the most iconic film car chase of all time is just not good, especially when compared to the sequences in Ronin or The Transporter" WTF dude? Did you just compare it to movies that came out in 30 years later in 1998 and 2002? Have you got no context of time? The Bullitt chase was absolutely thrilling considering the year it was made.

Bullet is the iconic chase scene. Yes they looped the film, but they drove it. Ronin is an excellent chase scene with out alot of cg. The Transporter films use tons of cg, just like the Fast and the Furious. I'll rewatch Bullet long before I re watch Transporter of Fast and Furious.

Agreed, I can understand not really liking the movie but not seeing it's, and his, cultural relevance even today is a little daft. Matt, I usually love your reviews but it just seems like you were kind of in a bad mood in this one from the start. Dissing the movie, McQueen and classic Mustangs is one thing and you're obviously entitled to your opinion even if it goes against what the majority thinks. But your pricing assessment was a bit off. A comparably equipped Performance Pack 1 GT is only about $800 cheaper, MSRP vs MSRP. Doing the parts through Ford Performance likely will be more expensive and you'd only get their 3 year warranty instead of the full 5 year Ford powertrain warranty. So for $800 more you get 20 extra horsepower, a higher top speed and a few other touches that most people think are pretty cool. Seems like a solid value for even the non-Bullitt fans once the dealer markups go away. A GT350 is 10k more and even at 10k more you still are stuck with a basic radio, basic gauges, and cheaper interior materials than the Bullitt. For those that use these as weekend cars that might not matter, but in a daily driver, some might miss these things. I own a 2019 Bullitt so maybe I'm biased, but your review is the first negative one I've seen.

Motor trend's review is pretty negative, and he didn't say that much negative about dynamics of the car..which are still inferior to it's rivals..but he just expressed negative opinion on the movie and culture behind it. It's pretty normal to not like things and think they are irrelevant (like some of the Dodge trims..or Lamborghini limited edition runs) and talk about it. Guess the Mustang community isn't that intellectual anyway or they'd buy something else.

Eh, laid an egg on this one Matt. The whole review seems quick and forced. Barely spoke about the car and it's features, yeah talked about the intake and the engine is mentioned the trans and at the end "oh third gear has some legs" but the rest was primarily personal monologue. I thought you weren't doing one takes anymore but reviewing cars on a longer term and only ones you thought were interesting? Not going to take sides but will note of the fact you did drag on the demographic that was going to be drawn to your review the most. Not the wisest of ideas there bub.

Micah The Bullitt car chase was the first of its kind: shot on real streets in real time, with a real actor behind the wheel. It set the standard for movie car chases as we know them today, from The French Connection to Against All Odds to The Fast And The Furious to Baby Driver. NoClassic Exactly lol, the deloreon was a significantly worse car than the 390 from a reliablity and performance standpoint, which is even more of a surprise considering the deloreon came out well over a decade after that car and cost a shit ton more. I get it, this isn't for everyone, yes, it is a bit gimmicky, but, that's kinda why it's charming. People like Matt Maran have always wanted a Bullitt mustang, now they can have it, it's expensive, but not outrageously expensive for your dream car. Getting back on point, the deloreon was a shitty car, probably one of the worst performance cars of all time if we go off of, the price, what it was hyped up to be , etc. Yet, we love it because it defines the 80's and it was a key piece of one of the most beloved film franchises ever, it's a gimmick, but that's why it was remembered. Not gonna lie, he was so salty in this video, I kinda lost respect for him. On one hand, we don't want him to suck off a car, but on the other, he shouldn't slam it either. This isn't the best sports car ever made, it's not the best mustang ever made, but it's a cool tribute to a great film. In short, this car kinda falls into the middle, in a sense, it's average compared to every car on the planet, but with how he treats it, you would think it's a prius, or something else truly terrible.

I think Matt must have just been in a bad mood. It happens to all of us at times, and sometimes we take it out on whatever's (or whomever's) in range. I mean, Matt's a Mustang guy, and he not only panned the Bullitt franchise, of which this is the third Mustang edition, but also all 1968 Mustangs. All he had to say was, "I'm not a big fan of Steve McQueen or the movie Bullitt, but let's see if this Mustang stands on its own merits..." Which actually would seem more in character to me. One big point he missed, was that the Bullitt is the understated special edition. No wings, no spoilers, no fake diffusers, fake vents, fake scoops, no tacky stickers, even most badging is deleted. Maybe that looks a bit anonymous from some angles, but all you have to do is look at something like a gaudy Civic Type-R to appreciate the clean restraint exercised. I'm not a crazy Mustang/McQueen/Bullitt fan, but I appreciate what Ford has done with their Bullitt cars. The only thing that bothers me about this one (and EcoBoost Mustangs) is they don't look right to me without the two diagonal bars in the grille of the GT. Otherwise, $3K is a fair price for some extra power, nice exhaust, custom paint, and a collector model.

Steve McQueen is an American icon. He served honorably in the Marine Corps. His movies stood the test of time. McQueen was nominated for an Oscar and a 4-time nominee for the Golden Globes. This man was a well-known car enthusiast who participated in motorsports. He had a collection of cars and motorcycles. McQueen slowly and painfully died of cancer in 1980 after desperately trying to find a cure. This man accomplished more in his life than most people. Matt...you never served in the military. Why begin by dumping on Bullitt (the movie), Steve McQueen, and your views of cultural relevance? This movie was well received by critics, one of most popular of 1968, plus the car chase scenes won an Oscar for editing. So your snap critique is distracting at best, a needless polarizing start to a review, and brings your judgement into play.

TheSmokingTire not sure about the movie, but Steve McQueen's style and persona is still a major influence over the tone of modern style and tailoring, same with people like Paul Newman, JFK, and Gianni Agnelli. Timelessness, as someone such as yourself who is interested in watches and horology would know, is an incredibly important cornerstone of various industries and lifestyles. Steve McQueen is perhaps one of the most well regarded figures when it comes to timeless design.

its a bad movie with a semi cool car chase wrapped in it. I own it even the car chase (usually the only part I watch) becomes suspect with the editing, presumably they had to re-use the same moment from different angles to make it longer because the mustang kept breaking flying over the hills of san fran.

You may not love the movie, or that car, but for most of us, we love a stripped down sleeper V8 Mustang with a stick, and big sway bars, made for the streets. I see it as Modest. The exhaust note speaks for itself. It's for people that don't need stripes or cobras, and don't need a supercharger. It's just the modern interpretation of the spirit of a classic pony car

Matt , clearly you don’t “get it”. it’s ok for you to spend thousands on rebuilding a car that was a disaster but only saved by a 1985 movie, but somehow it’s not ok for a car company to build a car to commemorate a truly historic film and moment in American car design? As many folks have pointed out, you weren’t there to see the film in 1968. Neither was I but appreciate history and it’s impact. I owned an ‘08 Bullitt for five years...a damn fine car because I loved the film, loved the car, the color and the sound...nothing like it. Then i had to make some life decisions and sell the car. Now I drive a Focus ST, it’s not as fast , loud or cool, but it still provides a great driving experience. That’s what the BULLITT mustang is. A thank you to Ford faithful who love to drive. If I had the money right now I couldn’t decide to buy a New Bullitt, used Raptor or GT350. All our great products by a great company. And oh btw in 1989 my father had some extra money he was between a 1965 Mustang 289 convertible and a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12. He bought the DMC and owned it for 12 years, what a piece. He probably would still own the Mustang today.

Well, YOU just don't get it Matt. I just lost respect for you because of your rant on the movie Bullitt and McQueen. Have you ever seen LeMans, the movie with McQueen? Or any of his other movies? Here is one example of how he is relevant: McQueen's 1970 Porsche 911S used in "Le Mans" sold for $1.375 million some years ago. Hagerty had valued the car at $72,000 at the time. His 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 sold for more than $10 million back in 2014. McQueen cars bring that kind of money because of his relevance. There are many well thought out messages below about his relevance, and the Bullitt car. So I won't repeat them here, but you should read through them all and take them to heart. Unbelievable opinion from a supposed car guy...

Say what you want about the movie, but that car chase is iconic, and Ford is simply capitalizing on that, I think it’s a beautiful car, and unless you can get that green in another trim level, then people are going to buy this particular vehicle, it will be a collectors item, just like the 40th anniversary ones, and of course the originals.

Can't say all that much about about the movie, but Steve McQueen's style and persona is still a major influence over the tone of modern style and tailoring, same with people like Paul Newman, JFK, and Gianni Agnelli. Timelessness, as someone such as yourself who is interested in watches and horology would know, is an incredibly important cornerstone of various industries and lifestyles. Steve McQueen is perhaps one of the most well regarded figures when it comes to timeless design.

And I know most of my favorite cars were built before 1988 and most have performance stats that are rivaled by modern $25k Japanese imports. That doesn't make the old cars any less cool. He just words things in a way that makes him sound like a pompous asshole and that's fine. It's common theme in the auto community anyway.

Saying Bullitt is a bad movie is like saying the original Gone in 60 Seconds is a bad movie. Oh wait... Seriously though, the overdubbed GT-40 exhaust used in the chase is one of the best car soundtracks ever in movies. Plus I think most people that are truly into car culture, especially on the American spectrum of cars enjoy Bullitt for what it is and appreciate Steve Mcqueen for the fact that he was a totally car guy, that acted just to pay for his car hobby, did all of his own driving and raced a ton. The dude was badass. I would personally love to see more of these sorts of cars than this constant, nonstop influx of all of the Hitler mobiles that look like fucking frogs.
