2019 Ford Tourneo/Transit Custom Rear Brake Pad Replacement & Swollen Wheel Nut Removal
The rear wheel nuts are common for the tin outer casing to become swollen not allowing the wheel brace to fit onto the nut....here i show an easy way to remove the wheel nuts which are 21mm in socket size.

Ive said it before, When pushing the brake pistons in , crack the bleeder, put a hose on, then push the piston in. No resistance, No fluid going backwards though the ABS valves and NO filling up the master cylinder and it gets rid of the dirty heat affected fluid next to the piston. Then when you top up to bleed the brakes, new fluid gets the the caliper faster. simple.

Sometimes the nipple will not undue , and they snap , then it's new caliper or gravity bleed it

@@alan4x Thanks for another great video! For what it is worth, I have also been practicing blocking off the break hose with some pliers when pushing the pistons in (after cracking the bleeder). I have also been told to add copper grease on the top surface on the piston and the fingers on the callipers. I am told it should reduce screaming noise from the brakes. Is this true?
@alan4x
@alan4x Жыл бұрын
@@Torstein1960 i don't think putting copper grease there will stop brake squeal...most pads have anti squeal material on them but i guess its worth a try if you have squealing brakes, not something i have heard of or done myself

Two wet belts on one engine and the sump has to come off to replace them!! Stuff is just too damn complicated now. I had the chrome cap fall off my Mondeo,I only noticed when I got a flat,and of course the standard wheel brace won't work because of the reduced size,luckily I had my trusty tool kit,and my 18mm socket and breakerbar got me back on the road quickly.I replaced them with Volvo nuts which don't suffer from that problem. Great to see you back Alan.

Hello and Happy New Year Alan and Monica ! Wishing you both well from across the pond . Thank you for this video on the ford transit connect . My brother just purchased an American version , model year 2o13 . IIRC , it’s got approx . 156,000 mi. or so . We’ve got lots to learn of this vehicle as it is new to us in acquisition and operation . Well , wouldn’t you know , I had completely forgotten from an early video of your channel that there is no hood ( bonnet ) release in the drivers compartment , it’s of course under the blue oval on the front grille . Also forgotten that the ignition key opens it . Luckily the former owner informed my brother how to open the hood . We were concerned we would break the ignition key turning it opposite to unlatch the second catch . Good old wd - 40 took care of that . We haven’t ventured into brakes yet but appreciate the how to on this model , albeit difference in model year . Of course being it’s an American vehicle of questionable maintenance record , we’ve much to get acquainted with . No fear , Alan is here ! With the assistance of the channels star attraction , lady Monica , it is certain that there will be less surprises of one of these vehicles . I will add that I haven’t seen many of these vehicles privately owned as they serve mainly as service vehicles here in fleet operation . This particular vehicle recently acquired was the property of a chap who’s trade was plumbing and in a privately owned business . You can just imagine that since these vehicles are relatively new in this country as they were initially designed and built to European specifications . Of course , ours is a left hand drive with auto transmission . It’s in need of service but as my brother and I are seasoned do it yourself mechanics , a professional mechanics worst enemy in some cases , we will tackle all we can . Not to worry , it’s our preference to handle repairs / replace in a proper fashion and not in a primeval fashion . Yes , one can find owners of these vehicles on videos here on KZfaq but I am personally inviting your guidance for future videos on the ford transit connect . Of course the model your servicing in this video is a larger model , my brothers is the smaller version with the four cylinder engine . As stated in this video , these are quite a bit more emissions items and hoses and pipes . Electrical , well we are getting a bit of that so far but luckily only just lighting . It may be fairly new , but it’s going to start racking up parts and money soon . An engine mount is in need of replacement as well as a headlight assembly . Well you can see where this is going but so far he is pleased with this new to us vehicle . I’ve yet to hear if it’s fuel mileage record but am expecting a good report . If the evap trouble code should pop up again after we erased it , po442 i think ? , we shall start looking around for pipes and hoses under the bonnet and by the fuel tank for evaporative equipment . It shall be an adventure in learning a new vehicle but anything on four wheels has become a mix of less foreign or perhaps in this case , more foreign ? , to us as previously mentioned , we service our own to the best of our ability . Now , if ford would be sporting enough to arrange for the ford Mondeo to hit our shores in bigger waves , I would like to see one up close and personal . I’m sure there are some here but not close enough to get my hands on . Well , I’ve held the your attention long enough , looking forward to you both in 2022 ! Cheers to you both , health and happiness always . Bang on all,at Steve’s taxi as well ! Cheers !

Funny enough had this problem with nuts on a mk4 mondeo today. Ended up removing the covers and will order new non covered nuts. Done rear pads on a mk7 transit and found starting off the rewind was hard going with the winder tool. I found opening up the bleed nipple helped but also using a suitable socket and bar on the winding tool to give a bit more pressure helped. Ford really screwed up with the nuts though!!

ok not transit related, but my daughters cmax had a seized up caliper, there was corrosion under the slide pin rubbers which squeezed against the pins, stopping the caliper sliding. the piston was wound out all the way, and i successfully wound it back with an impact wrench, after i could barely move it by hand. thanks for the video. your vid has also explained why her transit ended up with new bearings and everything:)

Hi Alan great video as always, just wondering if you can do a video on a timing belt change on a transit 2.0 like what you are working on, a relation to me has had one done and it's gone horribly wrong, tensioner was so called faulty and smashed the engine, engine rebuilt then kept over heating now fitted another engine and that's playing up, I hear those engines are terrible as my local ford dealer said if it wasn't for the transit they would of shut the door through lack of work, all the best.

When I do this job on my MkIV Mondeo and Mk III Galaxy, I pull the caliper and carrier off then remove the disc. Reattaching the caliper then allows me to wind back more easily and removing the disc every time the brakes are attended to keeps it from seizing on the hub. BTDT. Then pull the caliper from the carrier and regrease the sliders every time to prevent those from seizing. Reassemble and away. I've never solved the swollen nut problem. Later ones seem to suffer from it less but I think it just goes with being a Ford driver.....

There are indicators on the calipers where should be the sockets oriented on the piston right next to the turning way indicator. Nothing wrong with your method but with indicators it shold be always good at first time! :) The trick to remove the disc without the oem puller, loosen a lill’bit up those torx bolts 2-3turns or more you will see it, grab a rubber hammer/mellet hit the disk as many times as needed to free them up And the main trick is you only break up the wheel hub bolt when the disks are break up when the gap is there you turn out those torx bolts and finish the disk removal from the hub Sometimes i just let the disk break up and i remove the whole disk bearing assembly and push out with a (dont know the correct word) bearing pusher need to be sure to be not harm the bearing The timing belt not so hard. Rwd harder than fwd for sure!!! Nice to see your vids again thank you!

If you want those nuts to last longer don't use an impact gun on them or crack them off with a bar first. All the cars I have owned since 2006 have had that type of nut and I have never had one swell up as I don't use my impact gun to crack them undone or to bang them up tight. My 2015 Mondeo still has its originals and they are still fine. 😉

The problem with the nuts arises from the use of an impact wrench. These nuts must be unscrewed by hand. Tested on Mondeo Mk4.

i had to look this up but yes there are several reasons from from dodgy sockets to dampness under the tin cover causing swelling , best to find solid wheel nuts, cheers tomc997

@@alan4x I was able to remove a few of these caps and use an 18mm wrench. It looks worse, but it works. Whole nuts are a good idea, but the availability of good quality is poor (only Chinese). Unless in the original Ford store, but the price again ... Lots of health, Alan.

Thanks just done the fronts and only got the backs to do tomorrow . Everything went smoothly and trouble free thanks to your channel great stuff . Unfortunately I’ve notice my break pedal slowly sinks when the engine is running , not sure if it’s been like this for some time and I’ve only just noticed, as you don’t generally sit in your vehicle pumping the breaks and taking note of pressure . I’ve checked for leaks , levels are ok and I can’t see how air could have gotten in from just winding the pistons back . Any ideas ? Breaking is fine, just the pedal sinking slowly is the issue, plus a hissing sound like I’m pumping up a dingy . Master cylinder seals possibly? Thanks
