When Haas probably get their problems sorted out McLaren could have a fight on their hands. Renault are also showing pace, I’m hoping Kimi’s Alfa pace is going to stick to the rest of the season. Generally the midfield is looking extremely competitive

It's still unique in how the sport runs, how cars are designed from the ground up each season, the level of pressure on engineers, drivers and crews, the history, the fact that it's a true WORLD championship, etc, etc, The reason we care is because we love it so damn much!

The simple way to improve F1, before any major rule changes: In practice give the teams non race tyres - these tyres will work for learning the track and testing new parts. But teams won't know how each tyre behaves for the race. Qualifying is changed to 1 hotlap with the best going first, so the smaller teams get the better track and have a little more race tyre knowledge

They would have no reason to appear as being "the best", so they will drive slow to get the best track conditions for qualy. If you are talking about being the best as in the best position in the Championship, how do you decide the first race, or when they have the same amount of points? It just seems to be another way of throwing the dices. The idea commented in the Podcast - using at least one set of tires from the entire range, sounds a lot better, allowing the teams to take chances and change their tactics to an larger extent during the race.

Grass and Gravel are not coming back, because asphalt is safer and safety has priority for the FIA. However, if you don't penalise drivers exceeding track limits, the race would look like IndyCar at CotA, where they did not penalise exceeding track limits at the exit of corners, which meant, everybody was using the full asphalt runoff as part of the track. This cannot be the solution, because it means the corner is getting faster, the runoff smaller and the asphalt runoff is not existing anymore. This is worse than a grass or gravel runoff in terms of safety, which makes the asphalt runoff pointless. I think the penalties need to be more consistent though as you said. Maybe we need to introduce a long lap penalty like in MotoGP or Rallycross and say everytine you leave the track, you need to do a long lap penalty. That way, the rules are very clear and there is an on track penalty. This would also encourage drivers to stay on the track.

FIA should make it so that the teams don’t know what compounds they are allowed to use till right before the race. Gives them less time to make their elaborate strategies. Imagine if it was announced that half an hour before the race they announced you can’t use mediums. That would shake things up a ton. Make it more unpredictable.

Ban DRS, no hybrids, V12s with 1400+hp, no traction controls or any electronic assistance especially power steering, one practice session and fuel tanks wrapped around the driver. Also the top 5 should start in a puddle of petrol and the petrol should be lit up and the drivers have to pull away quick enough to put out the fire.

I'm sorry WTF1, but in these ABCDF1s it feels like you're giving random ratings to the drivers and I HATE IT. - Kvyat qualified 16th but started 19th because of an engine penalty, finishes ahead of Albon who started 11th and that's a D ? Like Vettel who has fkd up his qualy and race? WTF?! - Grosjean didn't run in FP1, had issues with his car all weekend long, and was ahead of Magnussen who had an upgrade on his car and that's an F just because "he complains on the radio"? He is annoying for sure: but you can't take away that he is driving great this season. - Matt says that he'll give both Williams a C just because he doesn't what they've done! I agree to disagree with people: but it looks like you just don't care. You guys want to share a race review and I LOVE IT. But at least work it properly it's insulting.

It's the tracks. Both the perez and ricciardo incidents would have been prevented if gravel/grass were lining the corners and straights. These huge tarmac runoffs are too tempting for drivers to use/abuse in the heat of battle. This creates situations that are virtually impossible to govern.

Love the passion for the sport from you three. I’m also a huge fan of the sport and have been watching every race since 1999 and have travelled all over Europe and North America to see the F1! The sport is so broken now, only good races happen when something completely random happens. The top teams have too much power in the decision making of rules and regs that it should only be the FIA that has the final say, not the teams with their ability to veto. I could go on and on, but I think, like you guys, that a certain level unpredictability needs to return to bring some chaos into a race that can throw it wide open without doing it artificially. Hope f1 gets better for 2021, but if teams can still veto, then I fear not much will change. Anyway, keep up the great work guys, love the F1 discussion.

Schumacher is hailed a great for having 7 world titles, Hamilton doesn't get the same respect being on track for his 6th. Mercedes are slandered for the domination yet we look back at McLaren, Williams, Ferrari etc with fond memories - again listing them the greats. We are in the period of greats taking over and becoming greats. Yes, the field should be more equal to make for closer racing and it not being a whitewash but teams and drivers have won my landslides before, and it will happen again. Hamilton should also be getting more credit. 18 seconds ahead of his teammate, consistently setting fastest laps. A guy who has interests outside of F1 and doesn't spend his week on a sim training over and over. The guy is incredible, I for one and happy to see him winning.

Hi. I've just found your channel and I really like it, good stuff. My idea to improve things might only be feasible at new circuits, but I think it would be fun. I think there should be a much smaller time penalty for putting new tyres on. Make the circuit layout so that more of it is missed by going through the pit lane. There would be much more 'pushing', more pit stops, the timing of stops would be cooler as 'getting out in front of your rivals' would be a more frequent occourance PLUS a faster car being stuck behind another for half of the race would be a thing of the past.

Yes, the teams are always going to go for the least risky strategy because they are not incentivised to take risks and finishing is better than going for a risk and messing it up. So they'll always go for the safest option when the cost of failing is so high
@Thenalya
@Thenalya 5 жыл бұрын
Knowing that no matter what they have to make at least 2 pit stops, allows the teams to change their tactic depending on the on track situation, with different length stints to combat getting stuck behind a car, making 2 quick pit stops in order to gain track position, or using the compound that fits their car design more than another, on which they struggle. It adds additional variables for each team to handle, it's quite a curve ball for strategists.

My suggestion in regards to the tyres/pits/strategy debate at the start; if you qualify on the softs, minimum two stops, quali on mediums min one stop, quali on hards no minimum number. Forces teams/drivers to choose between best quali lap or fewer stops. Currently, thanks to dirty air, track position is king, so you qualify as high as possible then one stop, but with this new rule you can separate those out. Force a choice, start with track position but risk losing it during pits, or start in dirty air and hope to pick up position later. This could lead to a) mixed grids as different teams/drivers make their choices, and also b) more variety in strategy rather than everyone one stopping all the time.

I think these things will improve the spectacle hugely: - Practice: Two 45-minute sessions, one on Friday and one on Saturday (would significantly reduce the amount of data the teams get and would reduce costs) - Spec Components: Gearbox, brakes and certain components of the engine (would allow smaller teams to concentrate resources on other components e.g. aero, chassis) - Budget Cap: Probably around the level of one of the midfield teams - Tyres: Drivers can start the race on any tyre, but must use all three compounds during the race (cheers for that one Tommy/Karun) - Penalties: If a driver gains an advantage by going off track, they must concede the position as soon as possible (would need to be fine tuned to remove any loopholes) - Tracks: Try to have tracks on the calendar which have grass and gravel beyond track limits/barriers very close to the track limits (the Ricciardo penalty would then not exist)

In Indonesia where I’m from, F1 used to be screened in TV for a long time until 2013. I think either because the Indonesian fans also share the same sentiment of most races being boring or MotoGP has attracted more viewers. Even with Sean Gelael being in F2, there’s still very little advertising. I agree that the 2021 rules should bring out a positive impact that may increase the fandom. Great debate. I also like to debate about those topics with my friend and also my dad.

They can learn a lot from DTM. There were similar issues and they solved them pretty well. What I feel would help is, less Aero/Downforce on the car. 2 races a weekend, one saturday, one sunday with reverse Top 10. That also means fuel tank can get smaller and automatically the cars will get shorter. Less effective DRS so there is no more cruising by on a straight. Less on track time (practices) on race weekends but more test days.

After a long time following WTF1 this is honestly my first time watching your podcast. Absolute quality. Don't hold back, lay into it. Everything your saying is 100% how I'm feeling. Formula 1 is at the crossroads where it wants to maintain to be the Pinnacle of motorsport but is no longer the technological leader of the automotive industry. I would use the analogy that we don't ride horses but still watch horse racing. To make formula one more attractive to manufacturers and more importantly cheaper it's all the more reason to go back to naturally aspirated engines, leave electric technology for formula E and bring back the noise and excitement to formula 1. This way manufacturers can do that r and d work in formula E and make it financially viable to put money towards formula One teams for the spectacle aspect rather than the technological.

Schumacher was deeply involved with the development of the car and the race strategy. Most of the time Lewis cannot even be bothered. I fully recognise that Lewis is a brilliant driver, but all that hype how he is the God Of Racing himself just brings me to LMAO. His edge over Vettel is the Mercedes F1 Team. "Yeah, but Lewis is flawless and Seb breaks under pressure!" was what the fanboiz were chanting literally hours after HAM has crashed his car in the quali at Montreal. Just imagine Hamilton in the lead Ferrari and Vettel in the lead Mercedes. Everything else is the same. Valtteri is driving the second Mercedes, Charles is driving the second Ferrari, Binotto is Ferrari's team principal, Wolff is Mercedes'. Now tell me that even in that case HAM's and VET's standings would be the same as they are in the championship right now. Because this are the claims of Lewis' superb brilliance translated into reality. Imagine Lewis driving the lead Ferrari and the Spaniard as his race engineer. Exactly!

If F1 wants to push the limit in developing the technology in road cars they need to be the non spec Formula E's BIG brother. Sadly then the engines need to go but it will by doing so attract a lot of car manufactures which could make it really intresting. But like i said i want that engine and with the future of cars they are going to be rare to find in the nearby future... :(

From the next race, add a shortcut racing line for 1 corner on the circuit (that saves about 1 second vs. normal racing line). Based on qualifying, drivers will gain the amount of times they are allowed to use the shortcut. E.g. Pole = 2 times; 2nd = 4 times; 3rd = 6 times; P20 = 40 times. Drivers are allowed to take the shortcut lines on any lap. Number of times a driver is allowed to use the shortcut lines can be accumulated to the next race if unused. For Russell or Kubica, they should save up shortcuts amount for 2 races (80 shortcuts = equivalent to 80 seconds) then should be competitive (not lapped) or even win a race! What do you guys think? 🤔

Whenever I watch old race replays I think about how refueling would improve modern F1 races. You‘d have more stops, more strategy options, lighter cars and less fuel saving during the race which allows for better racing. I understand that refueling is a bit of a safety concern, but F1 as the pinnacle of motorsports should be able to develop the necessary technologies to minimize the risk. If you look at IndyCar, refueling adds that extra dimension to race strategy and makes things more interesting, but it‘s not like cars are catching fire every race.

3 tyre compounds could work, or the fundamental issue is tyre saving and engine saving which really is about the length of the races. Keep it at 2 compounds but reduce the race length to 1 hr (equiv) so the drivers push more and the pit windows + strategies get opened up. Remove the large advantage from tyre/fuel saving and bring aggressive driving back as a viable option, but leaves tyre management as still an option but not always the best option.

The easiest and quickest fix is getting rid of all the data. The races are so predictable and boring because the pace based on how the car feels is no longer left to the driver, it is programmed based solely on data. I liken it to bicycle racing, power meters, and bio-metric sensors let the riders and team boss know exactly hard they can push without going over the limit. And like bike racing you don't give the driver the chance to just drive and decide how hard to push. Not saying they shouldn't be allowed to collect data, they just shouldn't have access to all of it during a race...no tire temps, brake temps, ability to adjust power etc...

You could have a mandatory 2 tire types. One tire has an extreme amount of grip but is unpredictable, and a second compound that is slightly less grippy but doesn’t change as much during the race. Each team has to use both types during the race.

Ross: Identical cars for qualifying! That way we would have a real representation of the drivers abilities. In addition, it would introduce variability -- if a driver was 'zeroed in' he could earn pole; drivers not at their best during qualifying could find themselves starting from the back. On race day put the drivers in their team cars so the constructors and the team as a whole can show their abilities.

I think refueling is an answer. That should introduce more variance in the strategies, a pace much closer to qualification. The weight difference should be able to make slower cars race against faster cars. Engines can be mapped to a default performance mode, so we get equal performance engines, but manufacturers can make a difference in fuel consumption and reliability. I think the rules can specify safe refuelling conditions in case there are safety concerns.

use all compound is best ...if u try to save tires u will be passed from someone on different strategy safety car will bring more action and remove fp1 and fp2 and split fp3 into 2 parts with a break in between and then qualifiers in 1 day (so instead of 3 days 1 full day events and quali less time to adjust cars) and race and post race session on day 2 .

Let the teams use whatever tires they want during the race. That would open up far more strategy options. Remember the French GP (Magny-Cours) when Schumacher pushed and did an extra stop. The tension of whether he could pull the gap he needed made that race one I won't forget. More options, from going with multiple stints on the softs to one long stint on hards, even maybe a 0 stop race, would throw all sorts of different strategies into the mix. It would also make the potential outcomes harder for the teams to sim and therefore introduce more real decision making.
