After 3 months of waiting i finally got #fearless back! (link to accident pic below) Celebrated by hitting the trails in Vinton County with some of my Jeep Fam!!! Skip to 1:45 for trail start. This road is known as Albright and usually reserved for the 'modified' groups as it can be harder for a stock Jeep to make passage, i've been told by more than a few Wrangler owners that i have no business on trails like this one and would need lots of assistance to get through.
The whole trail took an hour with some stoppages when a couple jeeps had some struggles, but Fearless took the whole thing with no issues, other than a few dents in my new exhaust. (i'd already done this trail in Fearless before, but at NIGHT...9 months ago, video on my old channel)
I have Rocky Road Super Sliders and that is the only modification at the time of this video. I'm planning a TH ride at the end of March for anyone in the Ohio area who would be interested in taking your TH down some trails!
My post on IG about the accident, and reason it spent 3 months in the body shop. / btem8wpdg1p

The Cherokee TrailHawk is definitely a respectable off road vehicle. I love seeing people test the capabilities of these things. And it appeared to have no trouble with that trail.

It is, however the problem with it is, due to its transverse (fwd) driveline layout, it is as capable as it can ever be from the factory. Not able to be substantially lifted, and likely not able to withstand long term abuse like the jeeps of yore.

The Trailhawks can follow the average Wrangler down the average trails. Modified they can follow modest wranglers through some gnarly bits. The only limit i've found so far is deep ruts since the KL's are more limited on tire size upgrades that are common among most wranglers. This year will be all about finding the limits, can't wait!

Super video. Amazing seeing "my" Trailhawk being put through its paces in mud. Seeing your Rocky Road Slider slam into that one rock, apparently unphased, pretty much sold me on buying a pair, soon. Couple weeks ago, slid sideways to within an inch of a large boulder along Warm Spring Canyon, Death Valley NP. That got me seriously considering adding a pair of rock sliders to my otherwise stock Trailhawk. Put a dimple in my muffler, few weeks ago, too. Needed to engage my locker for the first time during that most recent desert exploration, to negotiate some extreme erosion, teeter-tottering on 2 wheels.

The sliders are the best aftermarket part for the TH, hands down. These babies have paid for themselves several times over in non-damage that would have been. They are scraped to hell on the bottom/sides but that is because they are doing what they are designed to do. Every so often i hit them with a spray can to make them look pretty again, but it only lasts a few weeks until i hit the trails again.

No wheel rub. I was still stock. I think what you are confused about is the sound of the wet brakes and traction control. If i was having that much wheel rub things would be VERY bad, very very bad. BTW, i list all the mods that were installed at the time in the description of each video.

@@FearlessTrailhawk dang not sure if it was the camera mike but it sounded loud the video. Is it that noisy inside your Jeep? It sounded similar to the tire rub on my Jeep when I wheeled. I do not have traction control on my Jeep. With the traction control on your Jeep. Does it use the brakes to distribute the power to the wheel that has traction? You have sweet wheeling videos. Very cool. Great to see different Jeeps enjoy wheeling.
@FearlessTrailhawk
@FearlessTrailhawk 3 жыл бұрын
imho the traction/brakes sound is nothing similar to oversized tires rubbing on an unlifted wrangler. Occasionally you'll get the same wet brakes sound if you go water and immediately try to go very slow using the brakes down an incline. I'm not sure why the KL seems to amplify that sound more. Yes, with the newer vehicles they will apply brakes to the spinning wheels in effort to get the power to the gripping wheel. The camera/mount changes the vibration of the sound, but i real life, it sounds like a very angry animal or a cow maybe? Very loud. But nothing new or unexpected.

Nice man! Are you using Rock Mode with rear diff locked?
@FearlessTrailhawk
@FearlessTrailhawk 5 жыл бұрын
I think i only had the rear locked for the first loose rocky bit. Had it in Auto mode the whole time. The benefit of rock mode is it slows the throttle response to help make it less jerky trying with the gas pedal while rock crawling. Sand/Mud mode just FULLY disables the traction control and sets the drive ratio to like 80% rear power, which is helpful when going through deep mug bogs or sand when momentum is essential. I use Auto mode 99% of the time.
@CarGuy11
@CarGuy11 5 жыл бұрын
Fearless Trailhawk I definitely noticed less loss in momentum with rear diff locked because the brakes take a sec to stop a spinning wheel as shown in beginning of my video. Rock keeps it in 1st to let you crawl over obstacles.

The 2.4 is the normally aspirated engine which is anemic. The 2.0 is the turbo which has plenty of torque but the 3.2 is an amazing engine and perfectly suited to the trailhawk. I had a 2015 2.4 which I traded for a 2017 trailhawk 3.2 and I just bought a 2019 trailhawk elite 3.2 with every possible option including factory installed rock rails. I would be skeptical of a turbo in any off road vehicle because of the torque surge. My other vehicle is a focus st and I would never want that non linear power on a trail myself

Had the diff locked going up the first half of the hill. In 4Low and Auto mode the whole time. The 'secret' is to learn what lines to take that allow us to get through the sections with the least amount of damage, sometimes that means taking something different than the wranglers infront of you. Trail knowledge helps a bit too. But mainly just getting out there and learning your rig.

It usually doesn't sound this bad. But when you have wet brakes it does get a bit annoying until you dry them out. On the video it is magnified by the vibration that goes straight into the camera. Usually its just a 'thunking/ticking' type of sound. You can hear it ever so briefly at 18:05 as i come over that lip. That is what it normally sounds like.

I'll be doing some mild trails tomorrow (saturday) at 2pm. Nothing crazy but i need some trail therapy after a couple months of no dirt! Rally point is "3 Garages" 50874 Clark Hollow Road, Londonderry, OH The mapping apps don't like the address, but its an obvious bit of 3 large ODNR garages on a small loop driveway. Its a common meeting place for trail rides in the area.

@FearlessTrailhawk
@FearlessTrailhawk 4 жыл бұрын
Anything trail wise you should be in 4Low, or you can burn up clutxh disks and other transmission bits. I typically use Auto 99% of the time unless i need wheelspin the i use sand/mud. I can't remember the last time i used crawl control. For this trail i did use the locker for the first half of the hill. But i tend to not use the locker unless i forsee losing wheel grip and needing to make sure the other side could push me through.

Trail hawk comes with a '1" lift, however I'm inclined to believe a 2" might have helped this Trail hawk along its journey. I've read where that might not come easy, though. Any truth to that the factory made it difficult to upgrade?
@FearlessTrailhawk
@FearlessTrailhawk 5 жыл бұрын
I believe the suspension is 1" taller, but i could be wrong. All the lift kits are for additional lift on top of that. They range from 1" to 3+". There are some that have done 3+" and have not shown ill effects. Personally i'm doing most of my lift through heavier springs, that way it doesnt change my maximum wheel drop and is slightly less straining on the CV shafts when #flexing out. And yes, this trail is much easier with lift and 32" tires...much smoother.

What forums or groups do you belong to? After your vids and some others from out west and up in PA, I took the dive. Today, I traded my JK for a KL(?) Cherokee Trailhawk Elite. It is a 2019 with 11k miles. Apparently the owner also had sweet Dodge muscle cars (dealer couldn't pin down if it was a Charger or Challenger or both). Regardless, this Jeep is loaded and already has RRO Super Sliders installed. It seemed like it was meant to be since I'd already priced those as my first mod. Frustrating to spend like 4hrs at the dealer, but she's in my driveway now. Forgot to mention, the final straw was the price. $25000, looks brand new except a few scrapes on the front skid and I had a decent trade in from the KJ, so it ended up being a $15k purchase of a 2019 Elite.

Nice deal man! I love mine, my struggle is finding someplace to get work done competently, trying my 3rd dealership out this week and so far its not looking good. There is a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Owners group on facebook, other than that i'm in a few local-ish ohio clubs. The most active is Mid Ohio Jeepers Organization, they have both a public nonmembers pages and a members page. I have yet to create an account on the jeep cherokee forums though.

Locked the rear for the first half of the hill climb. The transmission is pretty smart and decent at doing the whole 'brake-lock-differential', so it may have been fine without the rear locked, but i've gotten hung up on this hill before (poor line choice) so i figured i'd just lock it for the tough bit just to make sure i didn't have trouble.

If it was my daily driver I might have chosen one of these.

Its one of the many old township roads. Honestly my advice is to run this area with others who are familiar with it until you learn the trails. It is super easy to accidentally end up on private property if you don't know where the trail goes. Many of the ohio based groups go to Vinton, join their facebook pages or whatever and ask if anyone is going down or willing to show you around. But out of respect for the locals many of us who know the trails are hesitant to just give out the addresses and such to people who've never been down there before.
