I thought was you were spot on well done. I ride a zzr1400 performance sport and I found versys 1000 a top bike believe me it had to convince me. So with your help and a 30 mile test ride I bought one and I pick it up on the 9th March. Its the grand touring model

I agree 100% mark with what fits one person isn’t right for another. Sports bikes are no longer sorted to myself, I’m 53 with minor back and knee niggles. An upright superbly comfortable and well equipped bike is just what I need. Everyone has a different taste in style and colour etc, but I’m going for the orange/black colour scheme it looks different but seems really smart. I’m in Somerset so Exeter and Bournemouth and a nice journey. Please keep up the honest no frills reviews.

I went to my local dealer and took a look at the '19 Versys. Other than the paint scheme...Perfect! They had the white one which makes it look like a skunk...black sides and a white strip down the gas tank. I do like all the upgrades compared to my '15 model. I would buy it tomorrow if it came in metallic flat black!!! Not liking the Orange or Kawi Green color either. They list it for $17,999 SE LT+. Good review!

Mark - a hugely helpful review - comprehensive yet concise and a great assistance to my recent buying decision! I've been looking to trade my 15 plate Vstrom 650 xt and was struggling to find a big tourer that was as comfortable and so 'do-it-all' as the Strom. I'd also had my bike kitted out with full touring gear (Denali spots, givi airflow screen, full alloy luggage, USB charge etc) so wanted to try and find a bike that had most of these as standard and that wouldn't cost the earth - a tall order! Just to complicate matters, I've also recently had a brief spell owning a z900RS and fell in love with the in-line four engine, its sound, smoothness and performance. Then I landed on your review of the new Versys 1000 :-) and did a good test ride of the bike. End result is that I've managed to get a great 'winter sale' deal on a Versys 1000 GT. The bike is fully kitted for touring in orange/black livery and looks fab. I added an extenda fender, oxford heated grips, big screen and, to top it off, a 'beak' from power bronze which I think smartens up the front end really well. Just a few days ownership to date and the bike is a dream to ride. Early days but seems to be a rare mix or touring comfort, sports bike performance when needed, creamy smooth and doesn't need a second mortgage to fund! Thanks for the excellent reviews. Keep them coming.

Thanks mark for your great reviews on different bikes, I’ve been looking for a bike that ticks all the boxes for myself and the SEor versys GT does it for me. I was pondering over a Yamaha tracer 900 gt and the tiger 800 xrt but I’ve sat on this model and it feels amazing. Im arranging a test ride for a weeks time at bridge motorcycles in Exeter. Just a small plug as my bud works there and their service is first rate.

Looks like a great bike. My only concern is I have yet to see the base model on Kawasaki's US website, but they have the SE LT. I don't know if I can justify $19 grand on this thing, but the base model looks like it has all you need. I wonder if they are planning on releasing this model here in the US.

Thanks for focussing on the best parts about this bike instead of nitpicking over top end power specs etc. As we get older the creature comforts such as cruise control, comfy seat and legroom for taller riders tend to matter more than 150 bhp at 10000rpm that some bikes offer. It's either this or a Tiger 1050 Sport for me but I think the in-line 4 and big comfy seat of the Versys will tip it in Kawasaki's favour. I think.....

A good real world review as always Mark. MCN's conclusion on their test launch of the SE in the Canaries on super smooth roads said much the same. The seat height would do it for me I'm afraid though as I'm only a 29" inside leg. Why they don't offer a factory lowered option is beyond me- BMW do which is why I'm on my 2nd 1200GS and it's only a case of fitting slightly shorter springs. Speaking of the Teutonic tractor mine does well over 50mpg and even more on the motorway and gives me well over 220 miles to a tank full so 44mpg isn't good in my book, but there again it doesn't cost north of 16k!
@sproutandkidneysoup2296
@sproutandkidneysoup2296 5 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same position as you with a short leg of 29" and I'm seriously thinking about the BMW F750GS. They offer a low seat which would enable me to put my feet on the floor, rather than being on my toes with the standard setup, but I'm concerned about the comfort. I don't want to buy a touring bike that gives me a numb bum after an hour or so. Does lowering the suspension compromise the handling and ground clearance to any significant degree? I don't want to be worrying about the pegs grounding when I'm just motoring along. I'm not a scratcher, but I like to make progress and have some fun as well. I'm interested to know why you choose the lower suspension option rather than the lower seat height. I've not considered the 1200, so I don't know if a lower seat is an option. If it is, is it uncomfortable? The 750 offers both choices which give more or less the same result regarding seat height and I'm trying to decide which option is best.
@Bazza47
@Bazza47 5 жыл бұрын
@@sproutandkidneysoup2296 My lowered 1200GS has about the same seat height as the 750GS with the lowered suspension and standard seat by the looks of things. With the 1200GS (not sure about the 1250) if you had the lowered suspension option (reduces it by 20mm IIRC) you had to have the low seat as well as mine's about 790/800mm in that format and for me it works well. I was lucky enough that the dealer had a lowered version waiting for a customer to pick it up so I was ale to do a straight comparison in the showroom after I'd ridden the 1200 with the normal suspension on a test ride. I'm no hooligan/power ranger but do like to get a move on without attracting the attention of the boys in blue and handling wise I've never ground my GS out so I'd say don't worry on that score and being lowered the COG is a bit lower and the wheelbase slightly shorter so if anything it might be a tad more nimble and better planted but I would suspect most people wouldn't be able to tell one way or the other. I can easily ride for a couple of hours in the saddle even with the lowered seat, but as the day goes on if I'm riding long distances without a stop it starts to become uncomfortable after less miles but that may be me rather than the bike! I do have a gell seat cover if I'm going to be out all day with just stops for petrol but rarely have to use it TBH. The lowered suspension 750 will have the same seat/bars/pegs ergonomics as the standard bike, but the reach to the ground will be less where as the lowered seat makes you sit slightly more upright as the bars are effectively a little taller and your legs are slightly more bent at the knee so I would suggest you get to your local dealer and have a test ride and discuss the seat and suspension options with the them as BMW are very good in this area and you will be able to take one out for at least an hour. They might even have a low seat you could put on to see which works best for you but I would guess the standard seat with the lowered suspension would be a good place to start as you'll be lower to the ground but have a decent amount of padding and as you say you could try out the various options to get an idea which will suit you best. I've also got a pair on Daytona M Star boots as they have a 25mm thicker heel in them so help out in the short leg department too which I got more for when I have the wife on the back and fully laden panniers, again something else you might want to consider. The 750 is also about 25kg lighter than the 1200/1250 so the seat height might not be so critical, especially if you only ride solo. Good luck
@sproutandkidneysoup2296
@sproutandkidneysoup2296 5 жыл бұрын
@@Bazza47 Thank you so much for your reply. I hadn't considered the high heel boots option as well! Probably because I didn't know they existed. You live and learn. Unfortunately, my local BMW dealer doesn't have a low seat/suspension bike available, but your answer has given me food for thought. I really do want to buy that bike. It was the ground clearance with the pegs that was worrying me, so thank you for setting my mind at ease. I want a touring bike, and the only options are the Ninja 650, which I would be more than happy with, or the 750GS, which is my preference. One thing I will say though, is a limited choice concentrates the mind and somehow makes the buying decision easier. We're not kids in a sweet shop are we? Thanks again for your answer.
@Bazza47
@Bazza47 5 жыл бұрын
@@sproutandkidneysoup2296 you're welcome. Why don't you go in and see the dealer principle, explain your problem and ask them to get a low seat in for you to try on their test bike on the understanding that if you like the bike you'll buy one from them. That low seat will as you've said give you the same seat height as you'd get on the lowered version with the standard seat. A test ride would allow you to see if the standard bike with the low seat had the correct ergonomics for you and if it was comfortable enough. If they say no try another dealer? Alternativly tey one if the forums to see if anyone local to you has one they'll let you sit on.
@sproutandkidneysoup2296
@sproutandkidneysoup2296 5 жыл бұрын
@@Bazza47 Yes I will. I need my feet flat on the ground and a seat height of 790mm gives me that. I've not given up! Fortunately, I'm not that heavy, about 66Kg, so I think the low seat on it's own will be enough. I've never had a bike that's given me a sore backside yet, so all is good. Hopefully. As for the ergonomics, It did feel a very comfortable machine when I sat on it so I don't expect any problems in that respect. Short legs and a long body. The top half was fine.

Thanks for the review, Mark. That is possibly, in bang for buck terms, the best available real world tourer. The V-Strom 1000 is possibly better value if you're going to do some dirt roads, but just how often does one do that on these big bikes?

The side panels painted black look so much better than that Monster energy drink "M" white paint on the premium model. I'm only 5'7" so I've got a lowering link on mine and also dropped the trees down the forks an inch and it's great. I'd definitely get the premium edition's windscreen. Does it have cruise control? Of the stuff mine doesn't have, that'd be the one option I'd want on it. That muffler is very quiet compared to my 2014s. I get about 40 mpg US consistently.

@kannermw
@kannermw Жыл бұрын
In U.S. you can only buy SE LT+ which includes panniers. This is same as what is called SE tourer in UK. I just purchased 2022 Versys 1000 SE for $17,000 w/title and registration fees excluding sales tax of roughly 7.25%. That is equivalent to 14,100£ of which you would pay 20% VAT or 13% more in just sales tax then in U.S. Then annual UK road tax is minimum 4.5X what I pay annually. Plus add in the horrendous differences in fuel taxes. When including your incremental 13% tax rate on the base model this increases purchase price within 15% of what I paid for fully featured version. If you added panniers or topcase, taller windcreen, hand-guards, quick-shifter, and heated grips (4 of these 5 might be considered necessities except QS ) then you would be paying much more and lacking any benefits of semi-active suspension and TFT. My whole point is Europeans are totally clueless about how taxation has accelerated their cost of living out of control yet many of the comments focus on purchase price. Lesson learned why you will accept less cause your government already takes much more out of your pocket and you are all good with that. 🤣🤣🤣

Can you read the screen with a dark visor ? - I rode one wearing sunglasses and couldn't really read the screen which doesn't have adjustable brightness. Are they the same service intervals as the previous model ? - that was dearer than BMW up to 7500 miles which is ridiculous.

Hi David wouldn't say it's better or more reliable ,BMW are very reliable these days ,the base versys is alot cheaper than the GS and for me it's what I'd go for only because I slightly prefer the butter smooth engine and it's so comfortable for me ,try and demo ride them both if you can ,let me know your outcome all the best mark

Because not everyone is hung up on HP and top speed. Some people want useable, friendly power, right where they need it. No downshiting to pass, simply twist throttle and be gone. And in the real world, 118 HP is plenty. Ill take midrange grunt over top end power everyday of the week. That's what you get with the Versys, plus Kawasaki reliability. And you save a lot of $$$$ and well. Makes sense to me.

"the money these manufacturers are charging for two wheels no roof and essentially a part time gig is astonishing!"- Malone Absolutely correct, with today's tech. and convenience in production it would not even cost 1/3 the retail price to make the thing, Just plain GREED. Besides, the world's resources belong to everyone, not to just corporate shills.

Spoken like a true delusional socialist. You wouldn't understand the basics of vehicle design, volume cost efficiencies, profit motive to operate a business, or basic market dynamics. These lack of basic fundamentals most likely explain why you wallet is thin, your perspective is irrational, and the value/price equation is inconceivable to your limited intellectual capacity. Luckily you were born with two legs just to get you around. The world's resources belong to highest bidder or the one who are most industrious to exploit them for the greater benefit of all. Been that way since the dawn of mankind. World is a competitive place and humans like any other animal still subject to Darwins law of survival of the fittest (mentally and physically). Take a good look in the mirror and you will get a view of one of those individuals losing the game.
