Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it before and didn’t seem to hear this guy point it out ... BUT! the bike still has the factory set rpm indicator/limiter on it... (red flashing light at 7k rpm) after run in service that can be changed and the 10200 rpm limiter can be hit! Bike has so much more to give then he shows in the video. This is by far the best small cc bike out there! It’s a bike that will never stop making you smile while you ride!

Marcos Fierros how do you mean? By going to max rpm? Before or after the run in of the bike?
@Alexander5R
@Alexander5R 4 жыл бұрын
It´s only a light indicator, not a rev limiter. The light can be set to any RPM that the user want (I had it to flash in 9500 and set solid to 10000 if I remember correctly). If the bike is new, is not advisable to hit such high RPM before the first 600 miles.
@jamesroydavies
@jamesroydavies 4 жыл бұрын
Alexander Sinco , you’re right that’s not the actual rev limiter just the indicator light but it’s also unchangeable until first service by Ktm. Plus the guy in the video seemed to only ever take it to the that run in setting of about 7.5krpm ... I feel he should have said something cause that’s where the top end kicks in of the bike and she has so much more to give that easily blows the competition away of the small bikes . A bit thing to consider if in the market for such bikes.

@@Marcos0ne this "unreliable KTM" story is sooo tired.. Every "seasoned biker" after admiring my Duke for a moment - will immediately go straight to "but it breaks a lot, doesn't it?". But KTM is really popular around my place, mostly Enduro (dirt) bikes (you rarely see a dirt bike which is not orange around here) but also Duke and Adventure bikes - and from what I am hearing from mates and other bikers this tired story is mostly an urban legend. Or maybe US dealers are giving bad service, dunno...

Maintenance costs for any bike come down considerably when you learn to do the work yourself. I know it may seem daunting to many of us who are not mechanics, but KZfaq videos are a great way to learn to do at least minor things like changing break pads, changing the oil and air filter... I'm just saying: you can save a ton by learning to do it yourself. I have an oil change tutorial for this bike on my channel, if anyone needs it!

This this this! Something that I haven't once seen discussed in any of these "best beginner bike" videos is how easy it is to learn how to do maintenance on a beginning motorcycle. There's not a lot of extra stuff on them, so you can figure out the basic stuff fairly easy.

Great review 👍I have a RC390 and love it! It’s stupid fun, great handling, and honestly I like the looks the most in the class. KTM makes a comfort seat ($125) and race bubble ($60) that is cheap and easy to throw on as well to make it even better. You can expect more maintenance costs but one of the biggest issues it has (bad water pump seals) can be fixed by throwing in some better quality seals yourself in an afternoon and tutorials are on the forums.

If it had better reliability (and the updated tft screen from the Duke390), this would be the best low displacement bike (with a fairing) for those that want a track bike. I really wanted to buy one, but engine problems that range from overheats to "it blew up on me" make the other bikes a better choice - unless you wrench. If you know how to work on bikes, dont mind having to fill up every 100-125 miles, and like the more aggressive riding position - this is your bike. FYI - they make aftermarket seats that are more comfortable, lowering links for shorter riders, and upgraded brakes/suspension for this bike. The Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 is built using this bike's frame and engine and (to me) looks nicer. Supposedly better (marginally) reliability, BUT more expensive. Great review Chase! Please look to trying out the revised CB300R, aforementioned Vitpilen 401, and Duke 390. I wouldn't call any of these bikes (with the exception of the 300R) a beginner bike - as you can embarrass a higher displacement bike on a back road with ANY of these bikes - just not on a highway, because of the lack of top speed. I think you need to do low displacement dual sports next! XD

Added info regarding the ABS of the beautiful RC 390: You can switch if off by pressing the space under the "SET" button on the dash. It doesn't have a logo for ABS but you can feel it when you press it. Perfect when taking the RC out to the track (where ABS is more of a hindrance than a benefit)

If you want a great commuter in the lower CC sport bike segment, the CBR500R is great for that. While a lot of people like to rag on it's "porky" 425lb weight, that weight does make it a great commuter, especially when on the highway. A lot of people forget that if one does a lot of highway, additional weight is actually a good thing.

I was surprised to find out that this is the most expensive in its segment in the US. Here in India, it is the most affordable in its segment. May be because it's manufactured here. But given it's also the most powerful and torquey in its segment, its truly the bang for your buck sports bike option for us here in India in this segment. I recently bought the naked cousin of this bike, the Duke 390. The other manufacturers (Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda) are falling behind in this segment in our market in terms of sales and performance.

I have a Hayabusa and it is a tank to drive around town, not that fun to ride at all so I bought a brand new 2018 390 last month and yes, I totally agree, it is a blast to drive, so nimble, so fun, I love it and it's looks great. I will use the 'Busa for highway and RC for city. As far as the shift light, the engine isn't broken in yet so the red light comes on at earlier RPM's until the engine is broken in, 1000 kms I believe.

I’d have to give the KTM a 9/10 because I love KTMs. If I were interested in a small bike this is the one I’d get to tear up the city streets, if you’re doing a highway commute you’re gonna want a bigger bike.

Easily the best bike in the group, also best pillion seat, i was a bit nervous to try one, as i didn't think i would fit, but you have given me the confidence, that i might... i know the electronics don't want you to rev it, till break in is over, try it again after break in... would really love to see an update. Tank size and dash (hoping it would get duke dash for 2020), are my negatives about the RC.

I own this baby, it is a very good beginner bike. It beats 9/10 cars in acceleration terms. Though after 1.5 years I'm looking for an upgrade, I am getting a 600 summer 2020. I would recommend this bike to anybody who doesn't have a lot experience with riding. Also it kept its value quite nicely. Brought it to a dealership for an oil change. I bought mine for 3400, they offered me 3500 :).

I would recommend you to get a 800cc or even a litre bike instead of a 600. I have a duke 390 and a cbr600rr. I regret not getting something with more brute power. This is because the duke was so good in terms of torque and mobility, my jump to 600cc class was disappointing for me personally. My daily commuter was my duke and on the track I really wish my cbr had more grunt. I do love the sound of the cbr though.

Sambridha Thapa I spoke to some 1000 owners. They strongly recommended against buying a 1000. They are too much for the streets. And the jump from 40 hp to 180 hp will get you in more trouble than you can handle.

I bought this bike as my first bike even though I didn't know how to ride a motorcycle. It was a blast, I am very happy that I learn on such a sport bike, I was originally going to buy the first gen R3, but before I walked into the Yamaha dealership I passed by a KTM one and I found that the RC390 was cheaper, had ABS standard and they had lots of bikes available, versus the Yamaha dealership that didn't have bikes on stock. I like many things about the RC390, but the biggest problem with this bike is reliability, there are many stories on the web about head gaskets blown, radiators fan failing and many things related to overheat on the engine. My bike spent more than 2 consecutive months on the dealership garage because the mechanics couldn't find why the radiator cooling liquid was been consumed on the bike. Eventually they fix it, but the fan failed 8 months after that. If I knew about this I would have probably gotten the R3 or waited for the Ninja 400 that came out a year or so later.

A year later, for the engine all that happened was a larger airbox giving 1 less peak hp but +2 torque down low.

Nice review. As you know additional cylinders give more top end performance. So your highway ride on the Ninja 400 was better than a single cylinder KTM. KTM also has a poor rep as far as engine reliability goes

Can confirm that small bikes are more fun. I'm 13 and barely am small enough for our 2001 pw50. The thing rips though. I got to 30mph once.

Hey Chase, great review! If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? I'm kinda interested in the RC 390 but I'm a bit worried if it's too small for me at 6 foot 1. Thanks!

My first bike was a 2015 KTM RC390 and it was a great learner bike (until I got hit and totaled the bike) but the maintenance on it was crazy expensive.

Ari the valves needed adjustment very quickly and bolts kept rattling off because of the shaking. The steering stem bearing also went bad after 10k miles. I would recommend Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Honda low cc bikes because the last thing you want to worry about is reliability.

Oh!!! And btw, when you asked us to comment on one of the earlier videos, when you were just starting this lil series, and wanted us to guess what bike you picked. Well I didn't comment, but I honestly thought that, at the end of this, you would probably pick the KTM. I know you haven't stated that yet, and may be I'm wrong, but that's my guess. Reason being is because I've ridden one and it SURPRISINGLY did ALOT of things just as well as the r3 and in some cases, BETTER. Fuel tank capacity, the ceramic tile seat and a HORRIBLE case of the UGLIES was MY only dislikes. Also 💯 agree and WISH that yamaha would focus on torque for the r3. Don't really care about the other light weight brands lol. #yamahafan4life
