We've completed testing of the 2019 Mercedes A-Class, and discuss how it performed at our track - does the small sedan live up to the luxury nameplate? We also discuss Ford's issues with its Explorer and Aviator models, and why problems with a brand new car aren't as uncommon as you might think. And why are windshield replacements becoming more expensive? We answer that, as well as questions about our tire testing, and the lack of Japanese cars on European roads in our audience Q&A segment.

Nikhil Goria is that a joke? You shouldn’t be surprised if your 2 month old car hasn’t broken yet, unless you have extremely low expectations! I had a Camry that we kept for 15 years, just did regular maintenance and replaced the radiator. Traded it in after it has 180k miles on it.

This is why you never buy first model year cars. The Ford and Lincoln problems are inexcusable. That Mercedes is 100% overpriced, a Toyota Camry and Honda Accord gives you a better driving experience. I think sample size is important too, the typical Lincoln buyer won’t be doing half as much driving as the Ford buyer so the car will naturally wear down much faster, even if internally it’s all the same

Dreamy The Accord is truly incredible. I had a base model for a rental vehicle and I loved it. The handling was incredible, it was extremely comfortable, it had a ton of space, the engine made good power, the seating position was great, and the fuel economy was fantastic. All for half of what one of these A220s will retail for. Plus, it’s available with a manual!

So many generalizations in just one comment. Any statistics to prove that Lincoln buyers drive half as much as Ford buyers? Or that first model year cars have more problems across the board? I've had multiple Hondas and a Lexus that were first model years and they were all fine, so if I were to generalize and stereotype like you, I'd say the exact opposite was true. Furthermore, you can buy a Honda Civic that drives better than a Cadillac. You can also buy a McDonald's hamburger that will fill you up better than a sirloin steak That's not all it's about.

Happier every day I bought a '19 Explorer and didn't wait (and also pay a lot more)! Mine did have a defect, there was a sensor relay for the headlight housing that caused the DRL to appear "burned out". Was pretty disappointed the dealer misdiagnosed the issue and I had to wait for a brand new housing just for them to discover it wasn't the problem. But all is well now!

Another thing to consider about European cars in Europe is that they have "at home" factories and domestic parts making their vehicle's replacement parts cheaper. I was surprised to see so many Mercedes and BMW taxi cabs in Germany.

Thanks about the Consumer Complaint info. Inspired me to act on something that caused a strange crash 2 weeks ago while my wife was driving her 2016 X3 that resulted in her car and a parked car to be totaled in a 5-10/mph crash. From what she and the other 4 people in the car say it seems like the brakes malfunctioned by applying only on one side of the car. This resulted in the car leaping to the side. Let’s see what happens.

We have a 2017 Forester and the windshield cracked. It was a couple years ago when we got 5 foot of snow for Christmas. We took it to the dealer and they checked it for a stone chip and could not find one, so replaced the glass under warranty, They suggested that ice caked on at an inch or more in thickness below the wiper sweep area kept that portion of the windshield cold and the defrosters heating the bare portion of glass just above it caused the glass to expand more than the glass covered with ice causing the crack which ran across the bottom of the windshield. We had to wait only a few days for a replacement. We now clear all ice off even on the lower portion which does not interfere with visibility or wiper operation and have not had any more problems. I told my dentist about it happening and she told me it happened to another of her clients with another brand of car too. I'm wondering if maybe the newer cars are equipped with thinner glass for weight reduction and cost savings.

I don't know why people need so much new technology. The less options you have on a car equal less trips to the dealership to get it fixed. I want a reliable car that is going to get me where I want to go and I don't care about what the neighbors think.

The only problem with your comment is the fact that you are not driving your grandma's Amish buggy. Every car is extremely technologically complicated. Even if you eliminate all the electronic doodads inside the cockpit of your car, there is so much technology still left that if your car had a problem, your friendly neighborhood shadetree mechanic is going to be unable to fix it or fix it properly

My bet on the cars seen in Europe is taxes. Like Japanese cars in the US that have to be mfg here to avoid import taxes. The market in Europe is so small it doesn't make economic "cents" to built a factory there to service such a small number of purchasers. Therefore the numbers of foreign cars (ie Japanese) there would be fewer.

EARTH to Phliip Nestor: the U.S. has no import taxes on cars!!! tht's what makes us so unique and with the most affordable car mkt!!! (the current Prez wants to change that most unfortunately!)

Not sure if the market in Europe is "so small". A quick google search shows 15.6 million cars sold in the eurozone in 2018 vs 17.2 million in the U.S. and 17.6 in China for the same year. Don't see such a huge gap.

It's ironic to me that the new Lincoln Aviator (and Ford Explorer) are revealing reliability problems. My last American car was a 1989 Lincoln Continental (2nd year for that model) that was out of service for 20 days during the 9 months that I owned it. After unloading it at a loss, I have enjoyed a number of Acura and Lexus vehicles, none of which have required anything but scheduled maintenance. It would appear to me that Lincoln (and therefore Ford) have not learned anything in the last 30 years.

I don't know why people are shocked. Ford couldn't build a basic car that wasn't full of technology and make it reliable so why the hell would somebody be surprised that a all electronic's connect pewter controlled version not be a rolling piece of krapp? There's a reason Ford and Lincoln have horrible resale values.

Clue to what cars Consumer Reports likes. That Toyota 86 was tested quite some time ago, yet they still have it and use it for tire tests. It is a fun little car that is a little underpowered, but good overall. I guess I should not be surprised they like a Subaru (everything but a few parts, like the rear wheel drive transmission which comes from Aisin which is a Toyota supplier).

It’s sad quite honestly that a the American cars just are disappointing .All the tech and other items come with a price which isn’t bad when u have Kia ,Honda and a Camry going for almost 40 thousand . A class much nicer interior and exterior handling .. I mean when suvs like expeditions and Tahoe are 80 thousand or more .i am not he I need a brand name but for the money I think it’s a great entry level car .like any car options cost . Why do people hate onky on certain brands like Mercedes ...

For decades I found traditional climate control and radio knobs and physical buttons to be utterly reliable and intuitive to use, often without looking at them, and even so while wearing gloves. It is counterproductive from the standpoints of safety and ease of use that some car companies are cutting corners by replacing the simple dedicated knobs and buttons with distracting and irritating touchscreen controls and menus that require drivers to take their eyes off the road for prolonged periods and that are essentially dysfunctional if the driver is wearing winter gloves. I am, increasingly unenthusiastically due in part to this problem, considering buying another new vehicle and have placed a number of otherwise attractive options on the 'B' list or ruled them out entirely because of their needlessly convoluted controls. Indeed, I am starting to consider used vehicles as an option in part due to their more intelligently designed controls. With respect to control design it seems car manufacturers have forgotten two old truisms: 'If it is not broken, do not fix it' and 'Just because you can do something does not mean you should.'

Not the options, nor complexity of the infotainment. What I heard was that the controls could be easily and inadvertently actuated, causing undesired/unexpected changes. No one really wants that. Controls should be logical, and their actuation should require intent. (obviously, the steering wheel has limited surface area, so there might be some compromises there)

Except for Nissan ugh ... And as far as technology in most of the luxury cars ... Ppl don't take time to learn their car full of tech or not ... As a CR subscriber, I have to somewhat disagree with the comparison between the A-class and Genesis. Some folks are able to handle more complex technology than the reviewers. As much as I love the reliability of the Japanese makes that I own now, I still miss the logical placement, the tactile feel and the ease of use of the controls in the VWs that I used to own. May be the reviewers should kinda accept their limitations? Especially, the guy on the right? He makes these silly comments on most of his reviews of non-Asian makes. Dude, don't be a snob and accept that you're a simple man. It will help make your life a LOT better.

Listen, if you're tech challenged then don't test drive a modern vehicle. A touch screen is way more dangerous and distracting than some buttons so the A Class gives you options with tactile feel for when on the move. You clearly did not think of anything else that the best engineers at Mercedes spent hours and millions of dollars on. Old farts. If you don't get it rather don't say anythimg.
