Gav Zell planting the 2019 winter crop in northern NSW Australia.
Pulled by a Baldwin the 214ft airseeder plants a hectare a minute.
This paddock was last sown in 2016 and has been fallowed since due to drought and lack of stored soil moisture.

With only 600HP pulling, it wouldn't go very fast in their soil conditions. To make that unit productive in US soil conditions, you'd need at least 1,000 HP. Even then, it is only 500HP per 100' of seeder. That soil looks really light and dried out. Easy to pull there. And Welker doesn't actually farm that much land.

I'd like to know what other history you have on the iconic company. There's also Waltana; that built robust AUSTRALIAN 4wd tractors and Upton that finished with huge hp 2wd tractors. All mostly killed by stupid import tariffs. There's a real story here that needs telling.

Etc etc. Cool to watch but the detailed info would be interesting.

Sure would. The Balwin tractor must have sat nav fitted to control accurate bout width matching. Driver is way too far away to see the end of the machine. In addition to the volume of oil flow required to lift the unit, the volume of air for those two seeder hoppers must also be pretty substantial. As big as the tractor is, it's certainly got its work cut out. Would be interesting to find out how an empty hopper or blocked distribution head is flagged up to the driver.

Big bud shouldn't really be in the description as it may confuse some. Baldwin was just an Australian built tractor, I'm pretty sure Baldwin was mostly involved in earthmoving gear, but did build tractors for a time while there was a demand for large powerful tractors that big brand names didn't build. Other Australian built tractors built in similar Times was Waltanna an Upton.

Great video. That tractor has been really looked after or very well restored to look like that. Also GPS wasn’t around then so a few upgrades too. Baldwin was (or is?) a railway engine manufacturer so they had experience with building heavy machinery. In the late 1970’s & 80’s large scale farming in Australia expanded and there was a need for big horsepower tractors and big equipment. They weren’t available from the usual brands at machinery dealers then. At the time blade plowing was one of the methods used and required heavy duty high horsepower tractors. I don’t know the numbers but there wouldn’t have been many of these built. I remember seeing a Baldwin on display at Ag-Quip near Gunnedah in the 80’s.

@landlifem5872 5 жыл бұрын
Most airseeder are powerd by hydraulic. The tractors have hydraulic pumps that pump oil to the fans in the seed carts that then blow the metered seed and fertilizer down the hoses. Metering of the seed a d fertilizer is of done by electronic motors that can be varied the metering rate on the go. Lower end machines often have mechanical drive metering which is calibrated at the start and then left, it's a very reliable system but doesn't allow for variable rate seeding.

I can see the future and it includes seed hoppers that are lifted off and on the planter via a crane truck. No more dumping from a trailer into an auger to move the seed. The seed hoppers already exist. Simply need to marry them with the seed tender on the planter.
@datbomb98
@datbomb98 4 жыл бұрын
That seems like a lot more work than using a auger or conveyor to load the hoppers on flex drills like these

I really want to know how they made the John Deere Starfire GPS system work in this old tractor.

A 12 volt power supply, and a hydraulic power source, and voilà!, you can have GreenStar guidance, documentation, and implement control! It looks like an itc receiver on this tractor, so it might have StarFire 2 components.. Actually, just a 12 volt power source will put you on the fast-track to guidance!

Quite simply, using a standard universal loom, an ATU steering unit, a screen and a receiver from JD. Would be my guess. I fitted one to an old 935 versatile about 10 years ago. Just had to make a custom stabilizer bracket and splined insert for the ATU unit to fit onto the OME steering column. I also used the same system in a Ford 9000 Louisville truck that I have under a broadcaster. Same deal with the ATU mounting, had to make my own fitment components as it was never intended to go in anything other than a JD.. But hey if you have a piece of metal and a little imagination anything is possible

How many acres would a farm have to need for a 214FT seeder
@Condowie-Bloke
@Condowie-Bloke 2 жыл бұрын
At 10km/hr would be doing 65Ha/hr or 160acres/hr. 2.66 acres a minute.

Easily could have it, but not sure if it makes too much difference. In those areas they seed pretty light, it's not uncommon to be 20-30kg/ha, compared to where I am 80-110kg/ha. Often they just chase coverage, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.
