Many people are not aware of the possibilities that Public Works can be a good career. Not everyone can attend college nor wants to attend college. There are options for individual that like to work with their hands, solve problems, work with people and work outdoors. We hope we can motivate people to look into a career in Public Works.

Good video. A lot of young men out there who are not a good fit for college, or the military, right away and could benefit from a start up in a municipal public works Department.

How’s the starting pay? What are your hours? Are weekends mandatory? Do they switch your duties everyday? Can you only apply at your hometown or can you work in a different town?

I will probably have an opportunity to change my career as a truck driver to join the Public Works force in my town later this year. Much smaller than Buffalo Grove. Wondering if its a good idea at 43.

You’re never too old to join public works. If you can be reliable and are a self starter people will notice. Good luck!

@@dirttrackdevil1149 Every public works department is different throughout the country. Most focus on street repairs, sewer and watermain installation and maintenance, forestry, street lighting to name a few. Welding may be of use but may not be an everyday need. That being said, if you are good at your craft, chances are that you would be good in the public works field. Finding and fixing problems, finding ways to efficiently and economically accomplish tasks. Wages are not good... That's always everyone's question. That just depends on the economy. During a growing economy, the private sector may pay more but there is the chance of the position being eliminated during a down economy. So people are attracted to the higher paying jobs. PW is a bit more stable. During down a economy, sometimes people complain about how much PW staff earn. Most PW organizations have a modest cost of living adjustment. Plus you should have an opportunity to become vested and receive a pension, so maybe long term it is better than the private side. That will depend on people's living standards and current needs. You should reach out and talk to your local PW director or superintendent and see what they have to say. Your handle is dirt track devil, so maybe you are into dirt bikes. If so, you probably do maintenance on them. PW has plenty of motor vehicles requiring service and maintenance. This could potentially include police and fire equipment. If you are a problem solver, like people, working with your hands and possibly like figuring out ways to save, you should look into PW. Starting low in your desired position is not necessary a bad start. People retire, get promoted or move to other organizations. Positions can open up. Ask questions before committing. Continuing education is also sometimes supported which can increase peoples chances of being promoted. It will be up to you. You can get more info about PW from the national APWA website: www.apwa.net/ Good luck with whatever you decide.
