Subaru's Legacy has been around since 1989, a legacy indeed. With this mid-cycle refresh, Subaru jazzes up their stalwart sedan but is it enough to keep up with the likes of the Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry? Kelley Blue Book's Lyn Woodward takes a spin to find out.

I have a 2019 3.6r and I love it. Safe cars overall. I had a 2017 and I got in a pretty bad wreck but I know if I was in any other car, it would’ve been worse. I see everyone is saying how slow they are but I feel like the 3.6r’s have a good horsepower.

go to Fuelly.com. the 2.5 averages about 28mpg, the 3.6 about 23mpg. There are a lot of old people that drive Subarus, so some "hyper milers" who will tell you they do as well or better in their 3.6 than you will in your 2.5. Driven hard, my 2.5 averages 27mpg, so right on par with EPA estimates

I would like the Legacy a little more if the AWD system didn't come with such an efficiency penalty. I know that the EPA ratings are not *that* different from other FWD competitors, but Consumer Reports only got 26 mpg with the Legacy. The Camry and Accord got 32 mpg and 31 mpg each...and they're both at least a half second faster to 60. Subaru either needs to start incorporating parent company Toyota's engine and transmission tech into their powertrains or come up with something entirely new on their own. The old 2.5L is just not cutting it any more.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 5 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of CVT's either but I have to admit that they've come along a fair bit since I drove my first CVT in a droning Murano a few years back. I understand why manufacturers are using them to squeeze a few more mpg's out of their vehicles and Subaru's deficit (due to AWD) on that score gives them even more incentive to push CVT's. Have to say, though, that putting paddle shifters on a CVT vehicle just adds insult to injury and would remind me every time I used them that it's not a geared transmission. If a manufacturer is going to force a CVT on their customers they should own it. That reminds me of a similar issue. Are the exhaust tips on the Legacy real? BTW, does the Legacy have radio controls (tuning and volume) on the steering wheel? I suspect that the reason for putting the radio controls on the right side of the screen may be because they're about the only controls likely to be used by the front seat passenger. Putting redundant controls on the steering wheel for the driver gives both driver and passenger an option to control the radio. All in all, it's hardly an exciting entry in the midsize sedan category. But here in the Pacific NW, Subar-ites are a fanatically loyal and vocal group. I'm not sure many are attracted to a vehicle with less than eight inches of ground clearance and the option of a roof rack but if they're out there, they'll love it.

And don't get me wrong, I love the AWD in the winter. I've only gotten stuck twice here in MN and that was in very deep snow (unshoveled driveway/unplowed alley). It's just I believe that Subaru's quality is going downhill and their cars are just being made cheaper as they get more popular.

Yes, the exhaust tips are real. I can't speak for 2019 on having a source button but my 2016 does, and yes they do have volume buttons. As for tuning, they do if you are one to use presets; But Subaru has decent voice control that you can use. I like my 2016 Legacy, but am ready for my lease to be up. I am ready to be in an SUV.

this 2.5L isn't as fast as competitors, but it's not super slow either... it's adequate for a buyer who just wants a nice overall car that does o.k. or good in all categories... for me, if my daily driver, 2.5 is on slow side and I may not buy it, but for those who don't care as much (but do care no to be a turtle), then, like my fiancee, buy one.. she did, with my advice.. she cares about fuel economy more than power, but wanted something close to power as her 2-16 2.5L camry had (before being written off, not her fault and she wasn't in the car), this is a bit short of that on the 0-60 & 1/4mile, but it actually beats it 50-70 test by .2 seconds, which for me, this passing power test is more important than 0-60 test... so this test helped me determine it's adequate for passing power on the highwy, etc... and so far, only few weeks in, she loves it... BUT BE AWARE- the fuel range computer is f'n wrong and it said she had 90kms range and it stopped on her only about 30kms or so down the road and she was stuck on the hwy.... scared until I got there, or the cop with a tow truck that beat me to her and got her to next exit with gas station, which I followed them there.. they wouldn't wait for me, cause she was right on the fkn hwy (right lane) no shoulder there, so cop said it's obviously too dangerous, so they couldn't wait for me and got her hooked up and moved.. Tow guy took full advantage and full pop on everything, but luckily next day, Subaru (after my email complaint) called and admitted this fuel range gauge is not accurate and they're working on a fix for it and is sending us cheq. for full refund of the towing cost... so far a great car, but this one issue can hopefully be fixed soon, but she knows not to take it near empty and be safe moving forward.. Subi should be disclosing this in advance, aholes, cause running out of gas in potentially dangerous place, is not good at all !!! .. back to car, again overall, it's a very nice car..... oh, heated seats and steering wheel needs to warm up quicker, on slow side and ass naturally warm up before this really helps you in the cold.. and side mirrors don't adjust with the memory seats (some cars do that)...... not perfect.

and Eyesight is one of the better safety systems currently in use. I can see them improving it eventually because as a camera operated system it should already be able to recognize traffic signs and signals and at least provide that data to the driver (Mazda shows last speed limit sign, etc), and ultimately, help to drive the car more autonomously. But I have tested adaptive cruise around town daily since Sept 2016 and it works great.

In the good old time, sport trims used to carry extra horsepower from engine. Nowadays, manufactures just simply replace with bigger wheels and lower profile tires and fake paddle shifters, charging for more, the customers are buying them even if lower profile tires provides much less comfort and significantly more long-term ownership cost. Because nearly all auto journalists are praising the fancier appearance of the sporty trimmed cars which do not provide any real world benefits for the real owners. I suspect many of the auto journalists can properly drive a manual transmission cars. Why are those auto journalists giving positive remarks to paddle shift on a CVT? It was auto journalists negative remarks that forced CVT manufactures to install fake software controlled gears in CVT to simulate the lower quality automatic transmissions that were in auto journalists memorizes. In many real good automatic transmissions, for example, Lexus transmissions, most drivers can not feel when the transmission up sift gears. Adding unnecessary fake gears and paddle shifters only increases the cost of production that will pass to the customers.
