I still prefer the decades proven OEM spin on filter. Just tighten it hand tight with one hand and final small tightening with both hands. Worked for me for some 46 years now.

Finally a 5th Gen! :). My first oil change after the Toyota included services, I had to use a breaker bar to remove the filter housing. It was insanely tight. I swapped it for a oem metal one (a common modification) and now at least I don’t fear breaking it. Found the dealer had also totally stripped a skid plate bolt and snapped another, you know, because dealer. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The first time I tried changing the oil on my 5th Gen, I broke 2 oil filter tools and then broke the plastic housing itself. I wasn’t able to get the housing off. I put fresh oil in, then drove it to a pro who could get the housing off. It was way tight. Fail!

I had almost the exact same experience. I swear, as I was reading your post I wondered if I had written this and forgot about it. In fact, I couldn’t get my housing off, even with all my strength. So, I’m taking it back to the dealer with a complaint.

Excellent video! Please more 5th Gen 4Runner vids if possible. Outstanding info given on this video! Any quick oil lube shop will never do a 4Runner oil change correctly. Listen to this video and ask yourself is my mechanic doing it like this because if so they are a good mechanic. The talent he shares and the ethics this mechanic has is top tier. Always appreciate seeing things done correctly every step of the way. You sir know what you’re doing. Thanks very much for posting this. 😎

The skid plate is designed to hang down but it helps only if you have a lift , working with a floor Jack and Jack stands doesn’t give you much clearance, I have a 2017 sr5 and it helps removing both the plastic and metal skid plate out of the way
@keithscherer9372

Nicely detailed video. For those of you looking for tips for your first oil change... especially if, like myself, you do not have the means to lift your vehicle... I will add this: Get the skid plate out of your way, by first removing plastic shield. Yes, there is a plastic retaining pin holding the shield, unless someone already broke it! Disengage it by prying up center part with screwdriver, then the outer (main) part of pin can be pulled out. It remains connected to the shield. The metal skid plate can now be removed more easily. I used a flower pot to hold the plate up while I removed the screws. You can figure out the two hooks in front after the plate swings down. The drain plug washer did indeed stick to the pan... so tightly that I wasn't sure if I was scraping on the washer, or a raised lip of the pan itself. Discovered that the pan definitely is flush with the drain hole, after a pair of pliars finally worked the washer loose. The newly designed Motivx tool worked well on the filter canister, without engaging and potentially damaging the plastic fins. Good advice to use a torque wrench to reassemble, in my opinion.

Even the Toyota techs at my local dealership over tightens the filter housing on my 2017 Tacoma. They cracked this housing on my brother's 4 Runner. We just change our own oil. The drain plug and filter housing need to be torqued to specs using a torque wrench or just snug to seat the o ring and drain plug gasket.

I first learned of toyotas plastic housing filters on this gen 4runner. it's not bad but I do wish it just use a spin on filter so I could run a wix on it. this just takes a teeny bit longer and correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that metal arrow on the housing supposed to line up with the ridge on the oil filter housing. I always thought it was a dummy proof way to get it right without torque wrench. it pretty much bottoms out barely a 8th turn after it anyways so it's basically as tight as it needs to be anyways at that position. also that Toyota oil is made by ExxonMobil so if you wanted to save a bit of money. just buy a 0w20 Mobil 1 oil from Walmart or somewhere and thats as close as it gets to oem Toyota oil without costing a fortune. or use any other reputable 0w20 like Castrol edge or pennzoil platinum.

Took it home, changed the oil myself and will never go back unless something under warranty fails. I change it every ~5k or so. Oil is cheap compared to an engine.

Great video! I'm biased of course loving my 2018 4runner. So true on the oil filter housing, so many techs over tighten! I notice many images online people also align the metal tab on the filter housing, after its already tight with the drivers side "tab" on the casting. I've always aligned it with the tab on the passengers side and its been plenty tight, no leaks now I wonder if I’m too tight or too loose, no leaks so far and definitely past hand right. Keep up the amazing videos!

It is cheaper for Toyota to make, since metal is more expensive than paper, and a couple of rubber O rings. A steel screw on oil filter has several parts which are machined, and have to be assembled liquid tight. Then they have to paint it. The steel ones are bigger and heavier to ship too. So the Toyota ones are better for Toyota's profit margin, and for the environment.

With that logic why not change the oil every 1,000 miles? 100 miles? Or a similar analogy, my Rx prescription says take one pill daily, but instead you take three because you assume more is better. Simply follow the manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval for best results and least impact to your wallet and the environment. Judging oil by its color with out a lab analysis is alchemy. Assuming you know more about an engine than the people who designed it, tested it, and will pay if it self destructs because of their recommendations is lunacy.

I did my Tundra oil change two times last year. I've owned it five years and had oils changes done at the dealer, but $85 for a dealer to change it versus $55 for two 5 quart jugs of Mobile 1 and a filter, I'm gonna save where I can. But those pesky oil filter housing are a bitch, I found that if they don't wet the O-rings with oil and over torque the housing they suck to get off. But ever since I've been oiling the O-ring and torqueing it to the right amount, they're way easier to get off.

I think a lot of over torquing beliefs come from how the heat over time seems to make the oil filters tighter and harder to get off. I have been doing my own oil and always tighten to spec but after 5k that filter is always a pain to get off on any vehicle me or my wife own.

I own 2019 4Runner. When changing oil filter is one of the stupid thing Toyota engineers designed error. All they have have to do is make a door for easy access. Why they have a door access for oil plug and can't make one for oil filter housing?

Hello Peter. I always learn something from your videos, even an oil change one. The screw in funnel is a new one on me. Is that available only at Toyota dealer, or tool truck item?

Hello, thank you for your videos, I have a 5th generation 4runner, do you recommend the 1st oil change at 1k miles? Or 5k miles?

The funny thing is if owners take their 4 Runners to a quick lube place for sure they won't replace the filter given the additional steps to get to it. Even the dealer techs might skip out who knows.

I’ve never been so interested in a simple oil change. Such a shame Toyota moved to the canister oil filter. I love the simple cartridge filter on the 1GR-FE in my taco. No need to remove skid plates either. C’mon Toyota, keep things simple!

New 2022 skid plate has a cut out that can be removed with two bolts that allow easy access to the filter cartridge. Only took 7 years to do it.

@@CH-jq7xg no kidding?! I put the TRD skid on my wife’s 2020, so it’s the same, take it off every time. My 2021 I have KDSS, so I have RCI skid plates and a small door. That would have been nice to have a dedicated easy way to take the filter out. Way cool.

Wouldn't you think the oil is doing it job, if it is dirty? The oil acted as Cleaner and lubrication at the same time.

Any idea what would cause an oil light flicker only on the freeway after 60mph? The engine oil level is fine. Car model: 2005 Scion tC Manual transmission with 129k miles.

Hey guy 👋. I have a 2015 Toyota Tundra crewmax 5.7 4x4. I am having a front end shimmy around 55-70 mph. On and off not steady. The tires are new and a front end alignment plus tire balanced with road force has been done. The problem is still there a mechanic said everything is tight and looking good up front. What could it be?
