You need to either use the correct procedure or at least let the new and old fluid become the same temperature before you replace the same amount of fluid. Hot fluid expands significantly.
@pedrobilt7324
@pedrobilt7324 4 жыл бұрын
I thought you had to drain the excess fluid at a certain temperature, and these had a transmission thermostat you had to open while doing this.
@89ruslik
@89ruslik 4 жыл бұрын
You can do that or you can just put in the exact amount of fluid that came out. No need to overcomplicate things.
@stevebrackett2676
@stevebrackett2676 4 жыл бұрын
Some models of the Tundra I know have a trans thermostat ... the Highlander's of this vintage do not. But you are correct there is a "procedure" for doing this drain/ fill that requires a scan tool that shows trans fluid temp, etc. Either way I suppose. To me, this way works just fine, especially on a newer vehicle with zero leaks. You measure what is drained, and replace with that exact amount .... Your gamble here is that you are are "assuming" it was properly filled from the factory. Just my view on the matter.
@dm19609721
@dm19609721 4 жыл бұрын
This is a drain and fill....no need to worry about the thermostat.....however if you do a flush through the transmission line then yes you need to open the thermostat by pass valve so you flush the entire transmission fluid.
@HugDeeznueces

@@stevebrackett2676do you know what is the temp that the transmission needs to reach so you can let the excess oil drain out? This video, while useful, is missing that part which is critical and to be honest I really don’t like what the OP has posted. Measuring 3.2 quarts is somewhat many folks can’t do properly.

Almost all makers have removed the dipstick. It is not an issue of doing more difficult, nobody wants that. One of the problem with the transmission fluid degradation is the presence of oxygen. They removed the dipstick to make the transmission sealed and avoid the entrance of oxygen inside the transmission. Doing it in that way the transmission fluid last longer and needs less replacements during the vehicle life.

@@89ruslik - This is bad advice. Refilling with what you took out only works if it was correct in the first place. Additionally if you continue doing it this way you’ll build upon errors that you have each time. A better approach to this would be knowing how much exactly came out when the known level was correct. Then you could always drain and refill that same amount. But don’t base it on what came out each time

@@BigDipper79 duh my point is if the level is correct when you drain it and then you put the same amount back in that’s great. The point with the seal transmission is you don’t know if the level is correct necessarily. That’s the whole issue with people who say drain it and put exactly back in that was taken out. If you want to drive around with a low level and drained it just to put a low level back in then that’s your business.

Volume for volume can be used if the transmission fluid is say at room temperature in a garage (vehicle has not been running for many hours since it was last run) & so is the new oil at room temp.. Then removing an example of 2.5 quarts & putting back in the exact 2.5 quarts volume will be OK. Never drain 2.5 quarts of hot transmission fluid & put back in 2.5 quarts of room temperature oil. Because the room temperature oil will expand as it gets up to the hotter temperature the old oil was at and then the tranny will be overfill. Hope this is clear & helpful. We are all here to help each other learn. Dang newer vehicles are getting so complicated.
