2020 Acura RDX - An MVP with a critical flaw

A tremendous value, there’s only one detail holding the 2020 Acura RDX back from being best in class.
Shop for the 2020 Acura RDX on CarGurus: cargur.us/wCbzY
Few cars luxury compact crossovers offer more luxury than the 2020 Acura RDX. A strong, 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder and a flawless 10-speed automatic transmission make it a joy to drive on both highways and backroads. Its sharp looks and upscale interior make it a joy to park in your driveway. And with a starting price of $37,600, the base trim is an unbeatable deal.
But Acura’s insistence on the True Touchpad Interface makes dealing with the RDX’s infotainment system a chore. Similar in function to the Remote Touch trackpad found in Lexus vehicles, the RDX trades a simple touchscreen for a high-tech control device. While it’s clever in theory, mapping 1-to-1 to the infotainment screen, George found it frustrating to use.
On the bright side, the RDX is downright spacious for a compact crossover. Nearly 30 cubic feet of cargo space expands to 58.9 total cubes when the rear seat is folded. There’s also a hidden storage compartment under the trunk floor. Add in advanced safety tech, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and plenty of cupholder and USB ports, and the RDX is a great choice for small families shopping for a luxury car.

bmw's will always be unreliable but the trade is 50/50 weight distribution, great gas mileage for the 4 cylinders, and status. Also their infotainment systems are sooo much easier to use than lexus, acura, and mercedes. Also, look at the reviews for the 2019 rdx on edmunds. They're abysmal.

I've had my 2019 RDX since March of this year. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use so I don't get why people complain about it. There’s a big difference between testing and owning a vehicle. Acura has offered infotainment that requires a learning curve and results in reviews of disapproval. Take it with a grain of salt. Their cars/suvs are a delight to own and infotainment quickly becomes a non-issue.

I haven’t had issues with my brakes squeaking. I had a Volvo XC90 before we bought the RDX. The brakes started squeaking on it so I took it in to our Volvo certified mechanic. I've had my 19' RDX A-Spec Trim since July 2019. I upgraded from a 16' CIvic EX-T Coupe. I must say what an UPGRADE! I initially thought I was going to dislike the shifter buttons. However, it's been a breeze. my only two gripes with the RDX is the squealing brakes and infotainment system glitches that i'm currently experiencing. Like other's who commented said the Infotainment system is intuitive #FACT it is. It's also important to note that Acura is currently working on a fix regarding the squealing brakes which happens in the morning when I'm reversing out of my driveway. As for the carplay, that's an issue with Apple and we're waiting on a new build to be released. Car play would knock out and I wouldn't have any sound coming out regardless of channel (FM/AM, XM or Bluetooth). The current fix is to reset the infotainment system, which is far more in depth than pressing and holding the power button. Overall the RDX is great value and premium vehicle. I chose Acura because of the brand loyalty and incentives, as well as not wanting a RIDICULOUS lease payment that BMW and Benz expect. Can't wait for the SNOW so I can see what the SH-AWD does!!

I actually prefer the touchpad system - it's fairly intuitive once you get used to it as it doesn't require the precision of a pointer hovering above the icon. One can easily find the corners of the screen simply by feel of the corners of the trackpad and see it icons highlighted on the screen.

I've had my 2019 RDX for about a year now. I really like the touch pad in that it's easy to use, the screen never needs cleaning, and the pad allows me to keep my eye on the road since I don't have to reach. The learning curve is no problem and touch pad is actually quite easy to use. Premium gas is only recommended - regular is allowed and the car runs fine. I agree that the auto engine shut-down is a pain. It should default in the "off" position, rather than in the "on" mode. Ride, quietness, power, etc. is great. This is my third Acura and the reliability and quality is tops. I'm in Canada and the RDX is 5 to 10 thousand dollars less than other similar designs/makes from other manufacturers. It's my view that this is one of the best values for the buck that's out there.

Clearly there is a brief learning curve with the touchpad infotainment system. But once you gain a comfort level, it’s the only way you’ll ever want to go. My only complaint has to do with the stiff yet choppy suspension system. Also my tech model lacks dampening that should be a standard. That said it’s a great value that performs well above expectations.

● The system is confusing to use even when the RDX is parked, and it’s very distracting for drivers when the car is moving. For example, they’re forced to look at the screen to execute common audio tasks, and some adjustments are buried deep in submenus. We think it requires too much concentration, multiple steps and extended time with eyes off the road and hand off the wheel. It’s one of the worst systems that we’ve encountered recently. ●Braking performance is strong but the brake pedal has a spongy feel. The suspension quashes most bumps, but we found the ride to be rather firm and choppy. The cabin is quiet, barring a somewhat grainy engine noise. ●We got 22 mpg overall in our tests, which is average for the category, and no better than what we measured with the V6 in the previous-generation RDX. This figure also trails the performance from competitors’ small turbo engines, such as Audi, BMW, and Lexus. ●posting 52 mph through the course. Acura makes a big deal about its Super Handling AWD, which only comes into play when drivers accelerate through a corner. ●Most bumps are absorbed well, but the RDX has a jittery feel over rougher roads and on long drives. ●Most of the time the cabin is very quiet, but a coarse engine hum punches through under acceleration. It’s acceptable when driving aggressively, but annoying in everyday driving ●The brake pedal feels as if it isn’t responding at first, and it requires a bit of effort, which can make the driver feel less-than-confident. ●Although it’s nicely finished, the materials and build quality don’t quite match the best SUVs in this class. For example, the storage cubbies aren’t lined, there were some uneven panel gaps on the center console, and one of the dash vents didn’t move as freely as the others. Finally, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, but the material on the upper dash and window sill is quite thin. ●The RDX’s controls are among the worst we’ve experienced. There is a steep learning curve to use the infotainment system, but it is still distracting and confusing to execute common audio functions even after drivers have some familiarity. The system is slow to load after the initial start up.

I just bought a 2020 RDX a few weeks ago and love it. Drives really nice and I live in Alberta and give it an A+ for driving in the snow. one thing i'm confused about is the negative feedback on the infotainment and touchpad. My partner has a 2017 Lexus RX and compared to the Acura , the acura is way better. The touchpad took me a minute or 2 to figure out but now that I've mastered it I would recommend it. I can keep my eyes on the road and just have to put my finger on where I want to click. Its really good. If you're reading neg reviews on it I would say try it for yourself because I've found it way way better than Lexus.

The RDX 'recommends' premium fuel. We've been mainly using regular or mid grade fuel since ownership 10 months ago and have noticed no performance effects for our driving patterns. The Acura badge on the front grille was a minor attraction for me. I love it. Each to his own but to me it isn't "comically" large. The base model might be the best value but for us the 16 speaker ELS sound system was crucial in our decision to purchase the Advance package along with all the other goodies. I have had the 2020 RDX for a week now and I don't mind the touch pad. I don't think a touchscreen would work will because of the location of the screen (not bad by the way). It takes a bit of getting used to, but after a short time in works. Besides almost everything you need to do can be done from within the HUD. The one ok two BIG complaints I have are the lack of an SD card socket and the location of the USB for connection to the infotainment system Oh yea and the fact that there is only 1 USB!!!!!! This is by far the nicest car I have owned to date. I am very happy to be out from underneath the VW Tiguan I had.

Touchscreen or touchpad, people will always find something to complain about. Both would be the preferable option but then the screen position in the RDX would have to change. It should be hard to argue against the current position though, for ease of use while driving and keeping your eyes on the road it is the optimal location. Not reaching your arm up and having to touch a pad while moving in a vehicle is also pretty optimal. As far as safe driving goes this combination is hard to beat and should be hard to complain about. You don't even have to search for a mouse or pointer. Coming from the touchscreens on the Ford F150 and Subaru this is a clear improvement in every facet. Lets face it, there is inherent risk in trying to use a touchscreen while driving and this system does a fair job. Paired with the standard safety features and the Advanced models HUD (SHOULD BE ON ASPEC) this car is about as safe as you can get for ensuring your eyes are on the road. Just think about all the near misses you've seen others or been in yourself and how many are just due to people not looking at the road for whatever reason.

I've had my 2020 A Spec for about 2 months now. The things you're complaining about go away with the first day of ownership. The touch pad is intuitive and keeps your eyes on the road. I had a baby and needed something that was big enough for a stroller and groceries while having enough space for passengers and this suv was perfect. The handling is unbelievably enjoyable. One of the best handling SUVs I've driven. My complaint is the lack of power. It should have at least 300 hp since it's basically a Type R motor.
