It's been on the cards for a long time but finally here it is, the 2020 #Aprilia #RS660... and we've ridden it at the press launch in Italy.
The forward-facing parallel twin makes 100bhp, weighs 169kg (dry), is laden with technology, looks like the RSV4, costs £10,150 and made our guest road tester, Adam Child, very happy indeed. Our full review is at BikeSocial.co.uk but feast you eyes and ears on the RS660 right here, right now.

I've ridden nothing but GSXR 750's for the past fifteen years. This thing is going in my garage next. Finally someone recognizes most riders don't care about 200hp superbikes that cost more than a new car lol. Parallel twins have more than proven their worth.

Ever since I went from my R3 to my MT09 I wanted a bike with the 09s power but in the 'semi sport' package of the R3. This looks like exactly what I had in mind. My only potential issue is I'm not sure I trust the reliability of Aprilia. But I'm definitely willing to give the bike a look.

Well said...200bhp+ is just a status symbol, but can you really ride it on the road? No. For me there are two perfect bikes the Tuono and the new Super Duke both sub 200, but what fun.

Remigus Ker have you thought about the Honda CBR650R? About the same power (96 BHP), relaxed sporty riding position, 4 cylinders, looks great like a baby-blade, and has Honda reliability (and it’s a good whack cheaper too). Just a thought.
@remigusker6024

@@cp4512 I've thought about it aye and it's a handsome bike. But after riding one I found it just a touch sluggish feeling down low and the bike itself is a bit heavy and clumsy feeling in comparison to my 09. That said I still get the impression it's a good bike overall, but the 09 has spoiled me a bit on the "excitement" factor the 650R seems to lack.

... be honest with yourself... I mean, if you are happy with 100hp it's okay, but riding a >200hp bike is absolutely another level of experience. Owned a 1098s and now riding the new Gixxer 2019... Honestly I can't feel satisfied riding 600cc or 800cc, even if on the road they can be more "fun"...

I don't like the new aprilia (the whole brand), but I ADORE the 2strokes they made in the '80s and '90s. It's impossible to NOT like this brand. They are so niche and such a small manufacturer, still, they give everything a try: enduro, dakar, allroad, trial (world champion !) 2 stroke road racing, 4 stroke road racing, SBK, motoGP etc.

As the owner of a 17 Tuono Factory I have to say this bike checks a lot of boxes. Aprilia have upped their UI with new left-side controls and an updated TFT. I'm really surprised at how good the intake and exhaust sounds are from the parallel twin. I'll never get rid of the Thunderbuggy but this would make a nice addition to it.

This is such a clever pitch from Aprilia. Super bikes are just ridiculous for the road, it’s an ego buy. They look great but are a waste. This bike fits into its own category where everyone wants to go but didn’t realise. Enough power, great looks, user friendly and different and exciting enough. BOOM 💥

3 жыл бұрын
@Bernd DasBrot what kind of machines are we comparing? Different displacement? Weight? Geometry? What kind of street riding? Highway? Tight twisties? Fast flowing turns? How about speed limits? Same displacement engines with different cylinder numbers make roughly the same torque. But it is just a fact that a twin with the same displacement cannot be reliably tuned for as much power as 3 or 4 cylinder engines. Therefore they have allowed larger displacement twins to be raced against smaller four cylinder bikes because otherwise fewer cylinder engines just wouldn't stand a chance.

They should have cut the RSV4 engine the other way around[, making it a V-twin instead of a parallel twin. To me parallel twins are a bit malaise, reserved for beginners and british classics. If they would have put the SXV550 engine in this thing (and made it actually reliable), this would have been the true successor to the RS250. With the parallel it's just another beginner friendly road bike, which I suppose is what sells nowadays.

@@speedpower2740 yes firing order is the same and thus sound is similar, but the reciprocating mass is different which gives different power characteristics. Also a V-twin is going to be much narrower bike and more centralized weight distribution. The only advantage of a parallel twin is cost cutting due to a shared valvetrain between the two cylinders requiring less parts. You gotta pay for those fancy electronics somehow, sadly it's through an uninspiring engine.

Nice review but I was expecting a bit more detailed because you guys got to ride it for 200kms. How's the fueling ? Is it jerky or refined and flawless ? How comfortable is it for touring? How good are those Brembo's ? What's the fuel efficiency? How's the fit and finish of motorcycle? Is the ABS intrusive?

I wanted this bike. But with the delay, I got a GSXR 750. I’ve had two CBR600s, an R1 and now the 750. Loved them all for different reasons. Am I correct that this bike is less performance than my CBR600s? My GSXR is more than I’ll ever need, just as my R1 was. For me it’s not about the overall top speed, but a combination of looks, performance and how I feel (fit) on the bike. My question is “with over two decades of riding experience and skills to match the typical track day super star, will I be underwhelmed by this lower performing bike? I mean, how much slower is it than a CBR600?” That’s what I’m wondering. I prefer to ride safe and sane most of the time... but not all the time. And as I age, I am thinking about how a more upright riding position would be better for longer rides. Aging sucks but biking keeps us young.

Great fun bike, but of course it's at least about a 1000 bucks overpriced and I wouldn't get my hopes up about reliability & servicing ease and costs. For the same money, I'd rather get a bulletproof CBR650R and upgrade the hell out of it AND get a fancy new helmet while having pretty much the same level of fun on the road without any of the worries that I would have with the Aprilia. That being said, this is indeed the right direction: Building more fully faired, affordable midweight sportbikes that are not painfully wristy like an R6, etc. so you can tour and commute on them without hating your life. Only Ducati (SuperSport) and Honda (CBR650R) have similar offerings in this mega underrated class. I only hope that Yamaha (that awesome triple, hello?!), Kawasaki (How about a Ninja 900?), and Suzuki (revive the legendary 750 already!) follow suit. Over the past 5+ years, the bike market has been saturated with the overweight, overpriced, beaked, and overrated "adventure" bike craze AND the endless hype over the one trick pony naked bikes. Time for a sensible change, and that change is midweight fully faired, do-it-all (on the road) bikes like RS660, SuperSport, and the CBR650R.

@ Would have been interesting, possibly a missed opportunity now their MotoGP machine is effectively two such 300° twins. Alas, they confirmed it was 270° a while back; there was a look at the internals in an Italian magazine, too. Makes sense as 270° requires minimal additional balance mass and minimises inertial torque.

Absolutely love the whole concept of this... nice and light, plus 100hp is absolutely perfect for the road. I might get the Tuono variant, when it arrives. I'm wondering if Aprilia will be able to shake their bad reputation for reliability though, coming from a Honda that would be my main concern.

I love how you journo's always gloss over the suspension, those parts that are responsible for how the bike handles. Incredible. It looks like the forks have preload and rebound, and the shock has preload. Did it have any shock static sag when you rode it? Was the shock spring even remotely appropriate for your weight? Did the forks pogo? Most bikes pogo even when brand new. How could you even begin to understand the handling without evaluating the suspension bits and the settings? Makes no sense.
