Not every sportbike rider wants a 190-some-hp superbike. So for 2021, Italian motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia expands its sport motorcycle lineup with a smaller and more affordable version in the RS 660 ($11,299). Powered by an RSV4-derived, but more compact, 659cc parallel twin, the 660 is aimed at riders who want a real-world sport machine that splits the difference between practicality and fun.
--
Aprilia recently hosted its official North American press introduction for the 660 in Santa Barbara, California. In addition to a forthcoming review we recorded a special edition MC Commute where we describe what it’s like to ride the RS in a POV-style format. Swing a leg over the RS, virtually.

I hope it sells well for Aprilia's sake. They've had rapidly declining sales here in Oz since 2012 and will be lucky to sell 200 bikes and scooters in the whole country this year. The dealer network certainly doesn't help (I've got one dealer within 700kms, and their reputation isn't good).

He likes pure sport bikes and they're fun on race tracks and curvy roads, but this is designed for riding on the roads most people ride very day. I went from an MV F3 to a Ducati Supersport and am happy with that decision - pure sport bikes are too narrowly focused for everyday rides.
@jetninjamonkey
@jetninjamonkey 3 жыл бұрын
The supersport is an excellent bike, more inspiring to me than this rs660. The SS has a proven engine with a more desirable configuration with more horsepower, more torque and a nimble chassis. The SS would benefit from a TFT display though.

How was the MV F3 on back country roads or light sport touring? Also, I prefer an upright riding position for scanning traffic hazards and overall visibility, but I don't know if this is what you meant by "narrowly focused".
@rlsedition
@rlsedition 3 жыл бұрын
@@desimc89 When I lived in North Carolina with access to smooth, curvy mountain roads the MV was a delight to ride, but when I moved back to SE Michigan it was totally unsuited to the terrain. "Narrowly focused" means the MV was only fun doing certain things (going fast) on certain roads (smooth, curvy).

This is the first honest review of this bike I've seen. Honestly amazed, hats off. Every other review leads the viewer to believe this is the best machine ever made and Aprilia is changing everything. Reeks of payoffs. I might actually consider buying this bike since I know how it ACTUALLY rides now. It sounds like a beefed up R3 with a lot more electronics on offer. The R3 is great for getting around town, but very slow. I love my CBR600RR, it's quite comfortable as well, but this bike looks pretty nice for times with high volumes of traffic.
@HormigaZ
@HormigaZ 3 жыл бұрын
it's almost as good as the CBR6000RR for when you want to grab it by the neck, with a different taste to it (lower reving engine and more down low power as opposed to high revving) but quite a lot better for commuting. Sure, it's not a track beast if that's what you are looking for I'd recommend the MV Agusta F3 instead.

Part of the draw for these commute vids for me is seeing parts of southern CA I haven't seen before. Perhaps ideally the cam angel should encompass the dash and the road ahead? Loving all these street oriented sport bikes! I think manufacturers are starting to understand again that people ride these daily and sometimes/most the time never see track days. Honestly if the delay hadn't happened, I probably would of gotten one of these. I ended up going with a Ducati Supersport S but I do think the RS660 is probably a better bike. The SSS is very viby and the mirrors are useless.
@rlsedition
@rlsedition 3 жыл бұрын
I have an SSs and agree the mirrors are useless, but I'd bet the vibes are about the same on this bike (which are not an issue). OBTW, both bikes look great, but Ducati is better at choosing colors and using tasteful decals (what's with the large letter decals on the Aprilia's other two colors?).

Wow, OEM lithium ion battery in a middleweight. IMU with stability control and cornering lights. So light @ 400 pounds. Middle weights are the new Goldilocks bikes. You do not need a 1000cc bike. 100-130 horsepower plenty for the street especially streetable rpm useable on the street. Love the Led headlight with IMU cornering lighting. This bike will sell well. Bikes in the $22,000 range plus like Harley’s too expensive as you could buy a car.

I'm a huge fan of this bike. I love the look of sportsbikes, but so many of them are too leaned forward to be comfortable on the street. Also twins are awesome for low end torque. I hope yamaha makes a direct competitor to this. Something that looks as good as the R6 but 2 cylinder, and more relaxed.

I’d be curious to how this bike compares to the ninja 650

If the parallel twin makes insurance for this bike bearable in CA, it will be hard to resist.

How would be the bike if Aprilia puts V2 engine with same specs?

It would probably feel similar like a sv650 with bucks worth of tuned gsxr suspension.

For such a beautiful bike, I really do not like the ketchup and mustard look. I think think this bike in a matte silver with red and white accents would be drop dead gorgeous. A light blue similar to porsche's Miami blue would look killer as well.

In the spirit of questioning Every-Little-Thing. :-) Why would anyone drag their rear brake while cruising, straight-line?
@Joric78
@Joric78 3 жыл бұрын
Probably his preferred foot positioning and not being able to adjust the lever for this ride. Although I do wonder if he dragged it long enough to glaze the rear pad and cause that squealing.

Nice vid & very cool bike. It really appeals to me although I'm waiting for the Tuono to see what that's like, by which time hopefully Aprilia would've also worked all the new model glitches out too.

Why wait for the Tuono when the faired RS660 is already comfortable?

@@rlsedition Good point. I don't know lol. Tuono should hopefully be even more comfortable & a bit cheaper too. Worth testing both out I guess.
@rlsedition

@@ragerider6283 It looks like "cheaper" will have to be for case for the Tuono, as the comfort issue has largely been resolved on the RS660.

@@rlsedition I guess so but not sat on either yet so will be interested to see how they compare from my own perspective. Although as you say, if the RS is comfortable enough, it could make the Tuono somewhat redundant.
