In this video, I am taking you with me on a real life range test during a good 430 km trip on the BMW i3 120Ah. How can it cope with the highway speeds?

I have just bought a 2019 i3 42Kwh and have just performed a long range test at 10-17C. I started with 100% battery and a predicted range of 158miles on the GOM. I have driven hybrids now for 12 years and I am aware what a light pedal foot has on economy. So off we set on the 84 mile trip with a mix of motorway (60%) A road (40%) . Outbound heading for the coast there's more negative gradients but it will all level up on the return. As this is a max range test I put the car in Eco PRO and turn off the heating/cooling. I get between 10 - 22Kwh/100Km and a light foot also mean that I see quite a bit of regen. When I arrived at my destination I had a GOM range left of ! 130 Miles (84 + 130) = 214 miles. I charge to 100% again and then on the return when I arrived home the GOM said 100 miles so a return range of 184 miles. I expect these ranges to drop by switching to Comfort and adding some heating however even if these settings suck 20 miles of range that's still 194 and 168 miles so taking the worst case 168miles that's very close to what BMW expect this car to achieve and by switching to ECO PRO 180 is also possible for most of the year and for most journeys. Remember my home journey was full of positive gradients to reach the destination at 333m. So with this I have confidence this car can easily achieve its 160 mile range as quoted under these temps which in the UK is pretty standard. I am well impressed with this car it drives likes its on rails and accelerates like a rocket. :-)

That confirms what I suspected and hoped for as I’ve been waiting to get an i3 since 2014! Now it has a 42kwh battery and a flat charging curve to 80%, I reckon it’ll manage fine with our occasional 200 mile trips. Thank you for providing this info… ‘light right foot’ Geoff

Great video :) This car is not designed as a highway cruiser, the CD 0.29. Where i live the max speed is 80 km. (50mils). Range for me in summer is around 300 to 350 km. Great little car, this my third one. :))

I think that the i3 is still an awesome car and 120Ah with its high efficiency is fine. All it now needs is the addition of 100Kwh charging and then you can take it on road trips no problem at all but I'm afraid it will require new battery cells installed.

As a twice i3 owner, I hope BMW can upgrade i3 ASAP or at least the charging port!
@electricpower5183

I agree Will G. Unfortunately, I believe BMW does not plan to upgrade the i3, they intend to introduce different models which will be much closer to internal combustion engine design cars. I think the i3 is just too expensive to produce with all the fancy materials used in it. It's a great little car for city, it's really sad that technologically it becomes outdated... 👍

For the city its fine and for the occasional longer freeway trip its fine as long as one does not need more than 2 stops to recharge doing the journey.. The 50kwh max charging speed is slow by 2021 standards, should be double at least. In the USA the REx version is still offered on new i3s and this makes the occasional long freeway trips less stressful because there is less range anxiety.

Yes, it's a great city. On the highway, apart the range, the car is rather bumpy so it is not the most relaxed highway driving - which is absolutely fine if it is just occasional trips. Thanks for stopping by and don't hesitate to subscribe!

@@electricpower5183 Yeah, the stiff suspension and 20 inch wheels make for a bumpy ride, the sports version has a harsher ride but its more stable on the freeway. Its definitely more of a sport's car experience than a GT ride.

Good video, but you should have included more data (outside temperature start/end of trip, driving speed, total KWh used, total KWh charged, etc...). You can still add this information in the comments.

In my real life with i3 the rangaround 300 - 350 km inn summer seson. There where i live, the speed on the high way is only 80 km. So thats make a big different on the range.

Nice video, have the same one the s version, 10k km verry satisfied but haven't gone for a road trip yet, just one important question pls, what was your average speed up to when you pulled over for your first charging session, I saw a couple of times 130 km/hr but was that the case for the whole 199 km? Seems a bit optimistic to me!

Very keen as a used car purchase. They’ve dropped from £40k to about £25k. And that’s the latest battery - 2019 I think. When they get to about £20k or just under, I might be ready!

At 20k, with the big battery pack this car has no competition. It's really fun to drive, very precise steering, great materials. The main downside I see is the relatively slow DC charging, having said that it doesn't drop too much in charging speed, even after 80percent of state of charge.

@@electricpower5183 exactly. A nearly new 184hp carbon fibre structured BMW or a Zoe! Seems like a bargain. If you can’t afford a Model3 (me) and want EV fun, there’s this and the Mini. And this is way more interesting.

@@paulbarton957 did you get one? I'm in exactly the same situation. Alas due to the current spike in used prices I'd say £23k is more realistic.

I don’t see the point at driving ‘at ‘motorway’ speeds? I drive a van at 56-66mph and when I get one of these will keep to the same speed.
