This is the 2020 BMW M240i, a car so good that it calls into question its more potent sibling, the BMW M2. The handsome coupe is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre engine producing 335bhp and 369lb ft of torque. 0-62mph takes just 4.6 seconds with an automatic transmission.
The cabin offers seating for four and a 390 litre boot delivers daily driver practicality. BMW's iDrive features, as does a pair of sports seats in this M Sport car.
It is a great handling car with an impressive chassis. Combine its strong straight-six engine with this and you have an impressive sports coupe.

I think the M240i might be the best driver's car BMW makes today. It's not the track weapon the M2 is, but I think it's better on the road.

I had my 240i for 2 years and put 26K on the clock. A very quick car. I now have the M2c and would say the main difference is the M2c is more planted around the twisty roads.

As a M240i owner and previously a M235i, with a Cayman GTS in between the two, I can vouch that these are truly great cars. I’ve driven a M2, but not a Comp. I’d say the M240i has a broader range of abilities, the M2 is more focussed. Personally, I thought the ride on the M2 was just too hard on our UK potholed roads, particularly round town. The M240i makes a better daily and GT car, the M2 shines on the early Sunday morning blast or track day. Good review by the way. Your conclusions are pretty much the same as mine after 3 and a bit years. It draws less of the wrong kind of attention compared with an M2C, is a good chunk cheaper to buy and run and has a stunning engine and auto gearbox. Handling is decent, as is the ride. Many recommend the adaptive dampers, I don’t have a issue with the standard passive set up. Mpg is mid twenties to low 40s in my experience, depending where and how you drive. As others say, there’s nothing else like it. Mine’s definitely a keeper!

There should be more cars like this one. Great engine, small car, xdrive, convertible, 8speed automatic, fair boot space. All you need.

I’ve got the iX cabriolet. . .good in summer good in winter. . .Launches better because of X. . .In comfort it feels like my 5 Series. . .I like the sport + really makes the car fell different. Love it.

I just picked up mine a few weeks ago and it feels a lot faster than the bmw quoted specs. Did some research and Dinan is claiming that on their dyno testing it was closer to 369 bhp and 415 lb/ft in stock form. They have been known to under estimate, but at those numbers they would surely lose more sales of the M2. Nice review thanks!

Yeah, BMW have been know to under rate their figures. I suspect the same of the M2.

I added a JB+ Burgertune to my 18 M240i and it gave it a nice boost in performance, like 40hp and torque.

Yup just with jb plus and a intake i hit 12 second quarter mile and 0-60 in 3.55 secs using dragy. Xdrive. Car is insane

I only use my M2 on weekends. If i was driving it daily id lean more towards the 240i but trust me people if you just want a weekend car for fun and to put a smile on your face GET THE M2!

M240 with a LSD and stage one tune makes it handle and out perform an M2

It won’t out handle an M2. Better to leave it stock and for the “emotion” grab a C8 Corvette - what I plan on doing ;)

Even stock the M2 is less than half a second quicker than the m1/240i

Had mine for 2 years and I still love everything about it except for the highish mpg. I,drive it every day and it still puts a smile on my face each time

For daily driving it's the 240 all day. I would take an M2C over a 240, but wouldn't take the original N55 powered M2 over the 240. Would only take the M2 over the 240 if I was really pushing it on B roads every other day or frequently going to track days.

I got a 13IS (e92) with a Tuned N54, DCT, suspension and an LSD.. and only 46K miles.. The f22 is a little more tossable ..

M2 Comp, 286 laps on Ring, no issues. BAD display for track car. is the M240i display okay for a Road car; idiot lights, just like the M2? M2 Comp. I found one oil temp gauge. toggle wait. I could have saved some money.

Having gone from over 3 years with an M240i to an M2C, the 240 is definitely the better daily driver. However, as great as the 240 is, it comes nowhere close to the M2C in terms of handling, grip, chassis balance on road let alone track. The ‘M Lite’ brand seems to give you similar straight line performance to an M car as well as being more usable as a daily, which may be what people want or need. But make no mistake, going from a 240 to an M2 there is absolutely no comparison. You could spend the price difference modifying a 240 and the M2 will still be better and I’m speaking from experience as I had a stage 1 tune and Bilstein coilovers (admittedly not the price difference) but my advice is if you’re going to spend money tuning, just go for the M2

Yeah, sounds great. Distinctive high in the Rev range, deep at lower rpm.

It's just sad that this weight more than 3500 pounds...for the dimensions is really bad

Sure, but as I said in the M2 review comments, weight isn’t everything. Suspension, wheelbase, tyres, weight distribution are all huge factors.

It doesn't feel heavy to drive. I had a 370z prior to my M240i. The Z weighed 3300 lbs, but felt heavier than the M240.

Trust me it handles like a dream, and the extra weight is due to exceptional build quality! I own the x drive with 8 speed auto, and it's amazing still with all wheel drive!

I think the M240i can stand on its own two feet. M2 takes things up a notch, but this car certainly has its merits.

​@@insidelane Well said, I agree. I've had the F22 as a DD for 3 years now, best car I've ever had. With a a stage 1 and a few other mods particularly a sprint booster, I've been able to smoke a bunch of ///M cars on take off and short races - ate an M4 yesterday on a highway trying to do a flyby challenge. The look on his face as he turned when my debagded 240I passed his M4 was priceless. On the longer races though when the 240's limits becomes apparent, is when the true ///M car's unleash their potential - above that threshold, hence I agree with Blake as well that ///M is always the answer, however in all the time of having the M240I, I have never once wanted it to be an M2 or regret my decision of not getting one. There is something very special about the M240I, an intangible connection, and such a wild spirit that seems to bring out the racer in others. I get challenged least 2 - 4 times each day by the most unlikely cars and drivers.

I don't agree at all. The M240i is a better road car for most people, and offers plenty of performance. The M2 is only better if you're going to track it.

While nothing wrong with this car, the comparison to M2C is not even close. I had a test drive both before ordering an M2C. Try to have a test drive M2C you will want it badly. :)

M2c is a beast. Specially handling category. Which the 140i/240i lacks.. However, the capability of a tuned b58 for me is a no brainer which is why I got one. Hahaha

I had a test drive of M240i before buying an M2C. Two are quite different but only the appearance. The body kit, noise, response and handling are different. I read the wheel camber of M240 is wrong so the sidewall of tyres will be toasted prematurely. So I would choose M2C over M240i. In fact M140i is better choice than this.
