James and Thomas take the new 2020 BMW X3M Competition and X4M Competition for a ride in New York. The X4M Competition is their stallion for Monticello Race Circuit and the X3M Competition for the upstate scenic roads. Both SUVs/CUVs are equipped with BMW's new S58 3.0 inline-six engine. They both boast 503hp and BMW's M XDrive. The boys explore the cars driving dynamics and what they are like to live with every day. I'm with you on X3M over the X4M, though I don't think the X4M looks 'that' bad! It certainly looks better than the previous generation X4.

They're both ugly lol especially compared to their performance. Great performance that doesn't match the exterior ugliness. It's chill though my friend has a black X3M and my other friend and his wife have a white X4M

The glc 63s has way more torque and is .4 specs faster. And Mercedes is conservative with their 0-60 times. I'd say the x3m would be better than the stelvio though

cazlaker X3M does 0-62 in 3.8-3.9 seconds which is the same as the AMG, what matters more is what will happen after 62 mph. And if anything BMW underrates their cars even more.

Would have been curious to see how the X3M compared on the track, rather than just on regular streets, to see if they drive similarly. Both of these will depreciate dramatically in the first 3 years though.

I know I'm in the minority when I declare unabashed love for the X4. For someone who does not need to haul furniture or strollers but does need clearance to claw in farm lanes the X4 is lightning in a bottle. For me the X3 blends in with every other cookie cutter SUV's glass box, which I won't be caught dead in. I love my 40i. A fun review as always Cheers

I've got to say, the new X3 is a really good looking small SUV; it used to look a bit odd like they tried to make a tall hatch or something along those lines. I still can't get with the styling of the X4 and X6's personally. I have to agree with the guys though, the engine sounds great and the drivers seat does look like a good place to be overall

How is the rear cargo compartment with the 3rd row seat upright. It’s always been an issue for me on these German big SUVs as the family will fit for vacation but not much luggage space.

I saw these exact two vehicles on my morning commute in Jersey, on Route 80 East. (Had to be them, right? Exact color combo, one following the other, Competition badges, temporary tags.) I know BMW had their press event around here, but didn't expect that they'd still be running around. At any rate, for as good as they sound when revved, on the highway, they didn't sound or look too crazy.

Just got my 2021 X6 M50i with the Dynamic handling package. it looks awesome, handling is amazing, it has all the comfort features I want, it can drive it in the summer and in 6 inches of snow (lot of ground clearance). i love everything about it. i don't need the trunk space and i don't give a shit about the back seat because i never sit there. if my passengers don't like the head room, they can uber.

I can accept a suv 4400-4500 lbs but for me the 5300 lbs mass of the X6 M50i will be too much to have fun. I'm looking for a 2020-2022 X3m comp or stelvio quadrifoglio.

You forgot to mention the huge amount of head room of the X3 on the back seats. You would be like: “kids, do you really love the huge amount of space over your heads?” Or tell your friends “you feel so free and spacious in your heads in this X3, right?” “ on and X4 you would feel so claustrophobic “ 😉

I'm really surprised it seems like auto journalists unanimously dislike the X4. I actually think it looks great. My dad has the current gen X6, and I remember I used to hate that car when he first got it, but the looks grew on me. Especially the black rims and 315 wide rear tires look amazing. Anyways, I actually think the X4 looks really nice, especially the X4M

H x3 lol! Let's see if Tesla is still in business by the time they start shipping the model Y. Also nobody cares about a hot lap or a 0-60 time, car enthusiast pick enthusiast cars and commute on things like the Tesla. Most ppl driving Tesla's are driving below the speed limit to try and maximize their range which is crap in cold weather conditions. Tesla's are fine for commuting if you got money to burn, cause commuting can be had for much cheaper with a hybrid. Don't pretend you're a car enthusiast if your only car is a Tesla. Fact.

@@luxsasha Tesla's demise has been "predicted" for many years now. Let's see if those "predictions" finally come true, or if Tesla's 3 continues to do well against BMW's 3. Car enthusiasts pick many kinds of cars to own and drive and can appreciate good engineering for what it is. No reason to disrespect people for what they choose to own or drive. As a fellow ME, I think we can both appreciate the simplicity of an EV drivetrain compared to a hybrid. And it's advancing quickly. Surely you agree, even as a BMW guy, BMW has some catching up to do (would you seriously consider buying an i3 today?). Sure, hybrids have their place, but there's added complexity, and that can be considered a downside by some. "Most ppl driving Tesla's are driving below the speed limit"... hmm... do you have a source for that? Or is that one of your "facts" that you're pulling out of thin air? "range which is crap in cold weather conditions" - FYI, it's pretty cold in Norway and EV sales are quite strong. As far as your statement "Also nobody cares about a hot lap or a 0-60 time, car enthusiast pick enthusiast cars"... well, I'm not sure anybody cares about a BMW M SUV's hot lap or 0-60 time, other than an M enthusiast.

@@layne4376 I've owned 3 (2 in Germany) and none of them have been a nightmare money-wise. Then again I either do my own work or take it to someone who doesn't up charge. Know where to source your parts from as well. So much money can be saved on maintenance if you don't go to the first mechanic you see.

Great review guys! I also can't stand the X4/X6. Why bother?? They aren't as practical is the X3/X5! And if you don't care about the practicality, shouldn't you buy an M3/M5? Far superior driving dynamics.

I live in upstate NY where abouts? There is a private track right off the taconic state parkway that jeremy Clarkson, Richard hammond and James may used a while back. Saw them driving on my road when they were testing.
