If taking all your friends and their stuff from 0-150 in 26.3 seconds sounds like fun (trust me, it is) than the nice folks at BMW have just the SUV's for you.
The new for 2020 M50i in both the X6 and X5 has 523 horsepower to go with 553 lb-ft of torque.
From Car and Driver:
This year, the big change to the X5 lineup can be summed up in three words: even more performance. BMW has added a fourth member to the stable, the M50i, which pummels the asphalt with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8-up 67 horsepower and 74 lb-ft from the xDrive50i's similar 4.4-liter V-8. The M50i package includes a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, an M Sport exhaust, bigger brakes, and sportier suspension tuning with adaptive dampers. The X5 40i models are available in both sDrive (rear-drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) configurations. The V-8 models come standard with all-wheel drive and receive wireless phone-charging capability and a Wi-Fi hotspot standard.
Since the BMW X6 was launched, naysayers have denounced the genre-bending design as impractical and even pointless. Dubbed a “Sports Activity Coupe,” the X6 threw out the checklist of what makes a good utility vehicle and instead aimed to provide a sportier appearance, personality and overall experience. Now, more than a decade later, BMW has proven to be more trailblazer than outcast, as multiple competing (and non-competing) brands have launched their own versions of what are now known as “crossover coupes.” As an all-new, third-generation model, the 2020 BMW X6 doubles down on its core philosophies and improves in nearly every way.
Although bookended by the six-cylinder 40i models below and X6 M model above, we had access to the X6 M50i powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that makes 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That's a massive improvement of 78 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque from the previous V8-powered X6. With a curb weight of 5,115 pounds, the new M50i is significantly heavier than the 4,784-pound, six-cylinder xDrive40i, but its quick-twitch demeanor off the line, taut suspension, and light steering hide that fact. The twin-turbo V8 cranks out gobs of power readily available across the rev range, thanks to a consistently decisive and accurate eight-speed transmission standard on every X6.
Throttle tip-in is early, steady and even, and a full stab will snuggle the driver into the seatback. BMW’s official 0-to-60-mph claim is 4.1 seconds. With “manual” mode activated, sturdy paddle shifters call upon calm, quick shifts. An aggressive but contained soundtrack alerts passengers and passersby of something feisty under the hood and exudes the X6's intended impression.
The steering characteristics, unfortunately, do not match the thrilling powertrain or the emotional design. While light and easy to maneuver, there’s a bit of a dead spot on center, and turn-in is a little lazy. A tinge of road vibration comes through the wheel, possibly due to the 22-inch wheels, but the overall feel is numb and disconnected.

This BMW's greatest feature, however, is its powertrain. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 is essentially the same unit found in the M5 and X6 M, just with less boost. It's rated at 523 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque at a low 1,800 rpm. With its launch-control system activated, which allows you to rev the engine to 2800 rpm before releasing the brake, our test vehicle shot to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. That result may be a mere tenth of a second quicker than the X5 M50i's, but it betters the X5 xDrive50i's effort by 0.3 second and is 0.9 second quicker than the last X5 xDrive40i we tested. Our X6 M50i blitzed the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds at 113 mph, slightly beating its X5 counterpart's time and trap speed and essentially matching the straight-line performance of the previous-gen, 567-hp X6 M up to about 120 mph.
Top speed, as fitted to our car with the optional summer performance tires, is governed at 160 mph. BMW's V-8 is wonderfully smooth, even when pulling hard to its 6500-rpm rev limiter, and the authoritative V-8 rumble emitted by the standard M Sport active exhaust system provides a rumbly soundtrack. Similarly, the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is tuned to perfection, with smooth but snappy gear changes that always seem to have the X6 in the right ratio.

Holy crap your video came up to my feed again! I've been subscribed to you since 2012. The first video I watched from you is a M56s. You were working at that Infiniti dealership in Washington, then you went to Honda. Lost you somewhere around there. It's been a while. I was in high school when I first watched your video. Now I'm married with a kid. Man the nostalgia is real! Looking great man! I see you moved to Hawaii. Way better than the rain country haha. You still got that red G35 coupe? The twin turbo one.ll "Shiny on the outside, dull on the inside". You taught me that. I use that when I'm looking at used cars til thus day.

That's awesome Lou...crazy how it all comes full circle like that. I learned "Shiny on the outside, dull on the inside" from Brian O'Neil who owned Sports Cars International in Seattle. Brian passed a few years ago and a new Sports Cars International has opened up and it's owned by Brian's son Michael who was just a little kid back when I worked there. I brought that G35 to Hawaii and it caught on fire...so sad, that was a fun car. Thank you so much, congratulations on being a family man and I hope you all are doing really well

Great review! You approached both reviews from a very practical position that I could personally relate to. I’m currently trying to decide whether to go from my current 17 X6 50i to the 2020 X6 M50i, or to the X5. My decision is based on drivers head room. I’m 6’2 plus and 200. My headroom is ok now, as I adjust the seat high. I read where the headroom was going to be lower in the new X6. I sat in a 2020 X6 and didn’t really feel cramped - maybe it was just me feeling my head was too close. I think I still head about 2 inches left at the top. Legroom is fine too, and I do like the sport feel of the cockpit. I was also a little skeptical about the rear trunk design, but since I would be doing sapphire black metallic, the lines and trunk should look more sleek. Seeing you demonstrate sitting in the X6 and going over the details of the suv reminded me of why I chose my current X6. A unique design, practical enough for my daily routines, along a sporty style and power at the press of the peddle. It’s my only personal vehicle besides a work vehicle. So, I get to enjoy it after work and weekends - my wife has an X6 too for her daily commute but loves mine! Lol. I have to finalize my decision by March 2020. Looks like it’s gonna be the X6 M50i. Keep writing good straight forward reviews - they work! Thanks

Thank you so much Tony, you and your wife have amazing taste in what you drive! You absolutely cannot go wrong with either the X5 or the X6, but the X6 is genuinely much roomier than what I had read and even at 6'2" you are going to be impressed!

is x6 m50i reliable for daily drive? especially the v8 engine n63 worse engine ever?.
@TheeRighteousOnee
@TheeRighteousOnee 11 ай бұрын
It's not the worst engine ever anymore, BMW made several modification since the original engine was released. The newer model years with N63 are fine. They are just gas guzzlers and you need to change the oil every 5k miles or so to keep the engine in great condition.

I never been to the Hawai’i island but is there really a need for that many cars? Is the island big enough for new cars all the time? Where do old cars go ? Into a volcano 😂 jokes aside but seriously.
@everycarSeattle
@everycarSeattle 4 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not Euro, this island is the same size as the state of Connecticut...the cities are so spread out that you put tons of miles on what you drive. Being in a hot/humid/salty environment is also really tough on cars. So A) you need a good car or truck and B) they don't last very long so they need to be replaced way more often than on the mainland. However, with minimal to no traffic and tons of magnificent oceanfront roads combined with even more magnificent mountain roads, we enjoy some of the best real-world driving environments you'll ever experience....and of course, for adventurous off-road drivers, the Big Island is the best there is anywhere.

The Fast Lane with Joe Tunney Thanks for the info, didn’t know it was that big. So is there a junkyard in Hawaii where all the cars go when they’re junk or they get shipped off?
@everycarSeattle
@everycarSeattle 4 жыл бұрын
They tend to get shipped out to other countries for parts or to places where that particular kind of car is impossible to get, so they'll restore it since there is money to be made.
