Sorry, really not had chance to get out on the girl to do filming, done a few rides on and off as quick opportunistic rides, but not taken the camera with me. So here is what happened on the latest ride!

I think your coments on the Stereo Cube 140 is the best clips I have seen, very honest and straight forword from someone who is not a professional and has nothing to gain from any false reporting, you covered just about every question someone like me or anyone else would ask who was thinking of buying a Cube . Keep up the good reporting.

Chains on ebikes are the achilles heel especially shifting under load. Just another cost to factor in to emtb ownership. Loving your honesty. Maybe LBC's should offer a free chain with purchase. The sram powerlink is useful to keep in the backpack to get you home

Ditch chain oil, it turns to grinding paste. Get some hot chain wax on it, I've done 500 miles and the KMC chain checker tool says still good to go. I get about four rides before another wax dip. Make sure you back off the power as you change gear as not easing off puts a lot of twisting force on the chain.

I've had my chain snap a few times on my Cube. Shimano chain snapped within the first couple of hundred miles , replaced it with a SRAM eagle chain and I've snapped that twice. I now have a KMC ebike specific chain to try, e12 chain which is supposed to be heavier built. In the five years before this I never snapped an 11speed chain , I just think 12speed isn't that suitable for me on a ebike. Hopefully new KMC will sort that though.

Interested to know how you got on with the KMC. My Shimano 12sp broke after 100 miles. Sram eagle went on three days ago but not ridden yet.

I have the same bike but use a chain stretch gauge to check it’s health. Changing while under load is a sure fire way to do it. Will also wreck your cassette and chainring.
@RealLifeGadgetReviews
@RealLifeGadgetReviews 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the frustrating thing is I have gone out my way since day 1 to never change under load as the shop said very bad idea. (I was also taught that as a child so its natural habit anyhow).

Real Life Gadget Reviews I live Yorkley way and with the climbs around our area it’s near impossible to not have to shift at some point. You can purchase ebike specific chains which have a higher resistance, may be worth looking to upgrade while you have no chain.

550 miles in for my 160 version of your bike, and no issues with chain. Cleaned and lubed after every other ride. May just have been unlucky with that chain. Could you remove the damaged link and fit a second quicklink? Try that before forking out for a new chain as only around £12 if running sram. I know exactly where you were when you started the film, and that's flat, so chain would have not been under stress when you shifted...

I have the same bike, ( different colour scheme) and my chain snapped after 3 miles, bike shop replaced it, and I did another 3 miles ( school run) and it snapped again. Turned out it was a bent front chain ring from factory, maybe damaged in transit, but supplier was great swapped front chain ring, chain and rear cassette out for hope stuff as no new parts available, on mile 75 now and now issues

Basic maintenance skills will help. Deep clean the drive chain after each ride, clean the jockey wheels, rear cassette and front chain ring. The bike is fitted with good components, however they need keeping clean. A simple chain power link fitted with a ten bob trail tool would have got you home. If I’m more than smile from home I take either a bum bag or slim rucksack with a spare tube, a couple of air canisters, plastic tyre levers, a couple of patches, power link, latex gloves, rear mech hanger and a couple of cable ties. Prepare prepare prepare, happy trails

Do you find you shift while pedalling with heavy effort? I only have experience in a pedal bike shop mechanics, but I found that chains tend to break faster when riders shift while under loads. I assume the motor will add even more torque and stress to the chain while shifting. This bike looks so promising as far as getting out and having low maintenance to keep it running. Hopefully the shop will be able to sort it out for you.

I have gone out my way since day 1 to never change under load as the shop said very bad idea. (I was also taught that as a child so its natural habit anyhow), pretty sure its the torque coupled with the chain style, but as someone else said maybe just unlucky with this chain.
@jaeb279
@jaeb279 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, really bad luck with the chain then. On my fat bikes I go through freehub bodies or pawls and ratchet rings like crazy and that’s without the extra torque from a motor. I guess weight savings and cost are prioritized over durability.

Just unlucky tbh. I’ve snapped two chains in 2 weeks on my road bike before 🤷🏻‍♂️ but the 3rd has lasted 1000s of Kms. You won’t need to change the cassette or chainring yet just the chain. 11 and 12 speed chains are thinner than 8,9 or 10 speed chains. Don’t be too down beat about it. I’ve just learnt to enjoy bike maintenance; I find the approach of little and often better than waiting till it all goes to pot.

Yikes, just ordered a 2021 TM 140....this doesn't bode well... maybe lighter pedalling while changing gear? Also keep the cadence going- don't apply to much force in a high gear, more revolutions in a lower gear? That way the pressure on the chain should be more linear?
@kevinargust3694
@kevinargust3694 3 жыл бұрын
I have the 160 TM, 500 miles on original chain. Chain checker says still OK. You won't be disappointed, it's a great bike. As I've said before, research 'chain waxing', especially with extra torque of an ebike.

@@kevinargust3694 I've got some Smoove chain lube, its liquid at room temperature but goes waxy once dried on the chain. Have you used this? I'm hoping it'll suit an Ebike chain? I'm probably going to buy a park tool chain checker too....

@@79blustone Not seen smoove, I like putoline mx chain wax. Bit of a faff to get set up on first application but easy once done. Wipe with cloth, to remove any film, then drop in melted wax for 5-10 mins, allow to cool and all good for another three to four rides.
@kevinargust3694
@kevinargust3694 3 жыл бұрын
Just searched smoove, sounds a lot like purple extreme. Looks better thon an oil based lube. The important thing is 'clean dry chain'. the biggest problem is people apply wax to an oily chain and say it does not work. Chain HAS to be clean and dry for the wax to adhere to the inner surfaces of the chain.
@RealLifeGadgetReviews

I think you could just remove a couple of links and attach a quick link instead of getting a whole new chain. The front sprocket and rear cassette should still be fine with only 500km on the bike. I did over 5000km during a bit more then a year with terrible maintenance of the chain so 500km seems far to short distance for it to be anything other then just a bad chain. I have gotten Wippermann connex chains recommended and they seems good and as chains is the only thing that company do I think they are more likely to make better chains then any of he companies that do everything. They also have really good fast links that are tool less to use. I use my Scott axis e-ride to commute to and from work every day so when I replaced the drive system I also got 3 chains that I am in the possess to do the initial wear in and then I use molten speed wax on them all at the same time.

Unless you've got lots of excess wear on the teeth on cassette and front cog you should be good for a new chain its definitely gone out to soon it should have done easily double that , go for a quality chain.
@jonm7272
@jonm7272 3 жыл бұрын
Broken chain at that mileage is almost certainly due to clumsy gear shifting. Ebike's put huge torque through the chain, if you change up or down a couple of gears under too much pedalling power (e.g. on an uphill) you will be putting pressure against the side plates (because your chain is slanted across a couple of sprockets), this will cause the plate to separate and the chain to snap. This is your fault, not the bike's. And if you had a joining link and tool with you, you could have easily fixed it on the side of the trail and carried on for the day. Not fair to blame the bike or the chain, just shift with more mechanical sympathy and keep some spares with you. Similarly with the mech hanger, they don't bend themselves, it will be because you've hit the mech on a rock or root or something. Happens all the the time in mtb, just carry a spare and know how to change it.

No clumsy gear changes. Was told at the shop to not push hard during change due to early wear. Faulty chain in this instance I suspect. Manufacturers should learn a trick from the motorbike world and up the components to be a bit stronger (all the gear system etc), something a little stronger would round off these ebikes brilliantly!
@jonm7272
@jonm7272 3 жыл бұрын
@@RealLifeGadgetReviews I think there may also be an issue with using such a densely packed rear cassette anyway (I.e. 11 or 12 speed) which necessitates quite narrow chain links which will be weaker for sure. My wife and I both have hardtail cube ebikes (Acid and Reaction) with the basic 9 speed cassettes and consequently slightly fatter chain links. Both have well over 1000kms on them and even with (sorry to say, my wife's, who is new to ebiking) sometimes less than smooth gear changes the chains are going strong and not yet showing significant wear. However, even with the smoothest gear changing, swapping multiple cogs in one change will always put loading against the side plates and try to ping them off their pins. I believe some ebikes have changing triggers that only allow a single gear change to try to deal with this?
