Here are my thoughts on the new Africa Twin after spending a week on it covering 500 miles in all sort of conditions and all sorts of roads. It's a longer video than usual to ensure I got all the details in, but if you have a short attention span you can skip to various parts below; (obviously, I'd prefer it if you watch it all the way through)
What's new? - 00.37
Weight and bigger tank - 02:16
Seat Heights - 03:20
Exhaust Sound - 04:52
Rider Controls & Electronics - 06:29
Any negatives? - 08:47
A little bit of dirt - 10:40
Practical Torque - 12:59
One 'Car Play' drawback - 14:06
Handling & Brakes - 15:28
DRL & Cornerning lights - 18:29
Pricing & Options - 20:49
Walkaround - 21:08
Wrap up & summary - 23:27
The gear I'm wearing;
Arai Profile V Helmet - tiny.cc/gw74iz
RST X-Rally Jacket & Pants - tiny.cc/a274iz
TCX Drifter Boots - tiny.cc/i674iz
Sena 10c Evo - tiny.cc/c874iz

I couldn't have put it better myself Old Chap! and thanks for posting this very interesting review! I've also just purchased the Standard Africa Twin in the Matt Black with the red fashings and an awesome bike it is at first impressions and straight out the gate! And I have to agree with you here man! Honda really have got this middleweight contender pretty much spot on. The only thing I anticipated after spending a fair bit of time on BMW's 850 GS was the silky smooth ride, aided by the relatively soft suspension that all the major manufacturers have incorporated with 80/20 Adventure Bikes and rightly so, for anyone that has done seriously long distances in the saddle on these type of bikes like I have will feel me when I say "Comfort is Everything" So well done Honda and BMW for that! That being said, unlike the GS 850 the Honda has settings that you can dial in and save on the front forks and I for one can't wait to get them stiffened up and go give the KTM a run for its money on some rough, fast technical terrain! Just for reference to anyone reading this, it's not me being all giddy about my New Honda as I love all things 2 wheeled and own the BMW GS1200 Rallye, The KTM 690 Enduro R, A couple of road registered Flat Out Off Road Honda's and Yamaha's so I'm keeping it totally real when I tell you The New AT is straight up and awesome allrounder and would say to you all, get into your local Honda Dealership and give it a go!

Honda had this version at my local motorcycle show in Washington, DC recently and it certainly looks nice. I definitely agree the kickstand is too short - requiring quite a push to get it up. As a shortie (29.5" inseam) the bike is a bit unwieldy. Lots of good choices in this space. Thank you for the thoughtful review.

I love those cornering lights. Wish I had them years ago on my first Iron butt ride at night in switchbacks in death valley. That section of the ride was scary. Actually everything from that part on was sketchy but I finished it in my 1981 Suzuki GS1100.

Great review Tony, covering all the important things 👍🏻 and of course you test road it in an environment most owners will use the bike. The manufacturers like to show these Adventure bikes off road, but the truth is 95% of owners will at most, ride down a track on the odd occasion, or indeed, will never venture off a tarmac road. I’ve just bought a ATAS ES manual version and am loving it, the engine torque is a real world benefit and the exhaust sounds fantastic (probably the best stock exhaust sounding bike), the suspension is very well damped, plush but sporty and makes the bike handle very well indeed. The Apple CarPlay is a brilliant feature (although totally agree about having to use a headset is rather daft, especially if the battery dies on it, which means you’ll no longer have a nav), its great having all your music and maps on the bikes dash and it even displays google satellite maps, so when your looking for something, or Offroad you can see what’s around you. The other bonus is voice control, but I haven’t tried that yet. The control buttons on the bars look a nightmare, but as you say Tony, theres no need to use most once you’ve set the bike up how you want it, so on the move you’ll only be using the mode buttons (arrows), function and page buttons for the heated grips, volume and to quickly switch from maps to normal screen if you feel the need. It also has a favourite button which you can allocate to certain functions giving you a short cut to that function, although that list is rather limited and I’d like to see a few more options added. The seat is one of the best I’ve used on a bike, feels quite hard, but is very comfortable and now its narrower, easy to get your feet on the ground. I would like a lower screen, so hopefully there will be something available soon, but otherwise its fine, although a single hand adjuster would have been handy. The gearbox and clutch operation are silky smooth, no faffing around like on a GS. This bike is (so far) truly an amazing all round bike for me, granted I haven’t had it long, but having had a fair few BM GS/GSA’s in the past, I’d say its on par (if not better) with the 1250 I had before, which i got rid of due to some issues. I love the high riding position of adventure bikes, gives you a great view of the road (and the scenery) and they are generally very comfortable for long rides and touring holidays. Of course the ATAS also looks the Muts Nuts too 👍🏻😄 P.S. yep, the side stand is too short 😄

You clearly enjoyed the time you had on the ATAS 1100, but as you said, the new Tiger 900 may throw a spanner in the works. I was interested in it when it was announced, but the lack of electronic suspension on the Pro version ruled it out, as well as the colour schemes. But I’m sure its going to be a very good bike indeed. I’m Very impressed and happy with my purchase, the 1100 rides very well on the road, the engine/gearbox is fantastic and sounds great. I think you need to speak to honda to arrange a long term test and get away on it for a week 😄.

Thank you for a very well presented review ! Haven't been to your channel before but I'm subscribed now. You are spot on with your focus, most of us want balance in an adventure bike rather than all out off road capability. I'm replacing a Tuono later this year as I've found that full days, 300-400 miles of mountain curves are just to uncomfortable. At this point the AT1100 and the Tiger Rally Pro are the front runners. Can't wait for the Tiger's launch and look forward to your review!

Great review, thanks! It is very good to hear a review on the basic adventure sport and not as always the DCT with electronic suspension. Have you tried the previous model? If so, do you think when buying a new Africa twin it is worth paying 5000£ more for the 2020 than a new 2019 with full touratech kit?
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and yes I wanted to try what I think will be the most popular model. I have only ridden the previous model for a short period and although I think the new bike is better, that’s a big price and kit difference. If you are going to fit all the touratech stuff anyway, then it seems a bit of a no brainer

Are you sure those weights you quoted were dry ones? I really like this bike. Definitely the best-looking adventure bike. I had an RD-04 - the first of the AT 750s - for four years. I was living in Tokyo when I bought it and I shipped it back when I moved back to England. A superb bike if a bit slow. I'd be very tempted by the base model with DCT if it had cross-spoke wheels, but there's no way I'm riding on inner-tubes.

I really messed up. Have had smaller displacement dual sports in the past like the WR250R and picked up a 2022 CRF300L Rally ABS a few months ago. Splashed $1,800 on Rally Raid Level 2 suspension and uncorked it. Now my wife wants to ride with me. The little bike doesn't have the muster to carry both of us on longer trips. Really wish I had gotten the AT instead but was intimidated by the idea of a liter bike when I was looking. I think I'm going to sell my Lexus and get an 1100 ATAS ES manual and keep the smaller bike for trail work. Honestly didn't realize there was an affordable ADV touring bike and should have gotten the bigger Honda instead. Really seems perfect for two up adventures that we want to do.

Are you sure the weights you quoted were dry ones? I had one of the original 750s - the RD04 - for four years. I bought it in Tokyo in 1992 and shipped it home when I moved back to England. Too much technology on this model, but I'd be tempted by the 1100 base model if it had cross-spoke wheels. Have a puncture at speed on inner-tubes and you'll know about it. I know what you mean about having the off-road style in your DNA. I used to have a Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Ltd. Some petrol bill.

@@mancavemoto Just watching this again, Tony. I don't believe manufacturers' weight claims. There seems to be a consensus on KZfaq reviews that wet weight includes fuel. It can't do. If you take the 790 and 790 R as examples, they take 20 litres of fuel which weighs 14.2 kg. Very good review. I prefer the CRF1100L to this bike.

Great review but I don't know why people compare adventure bikes with offroad vehicles and SUV's - I can't stand those types of vehicles and would only ever drive one if I lived/worked on a farm or in the middle of nowhere. On the other hand An Adventure bike is everything - It's fun and light feeling you can do wheelies and after owning 5 since 2008 feel that they were just a progression from the motocross bikes I grew up with.. Sorry, rant over cheers!

Will be nice to see how these tft screens will last in different weather and temperatures conditions and how much service will charge to change them in cases of all bike manufacturers not only Honda, they are not doing tft themselves, obviously it’s made by others and something tell me it is crappy Asian electronics that won’t last especially on adventure bikes but let see😀
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
They should be pretty robust, but crappy Asian electronics? Japan, Taiwan and Korea have led the way in mass electronic development and manufacturing for years. There’s less tech inside the screens than there is in the average mobile phone I reckon. But having said that, only time will tell I guess.....
