The lakes and mountains of Idaho make the perfect backdrop to test the 2020 Hyundai Palisade, an eight-passenger, three-row SUV that’s just the right size for family vacations or daily drop-offs. Edmunds special correspondent Elana Scherr puts the Palisade through its paces, testing passing ability, infotainment and cargo space.
How does the Palisade compare to pricier competition from Lincoln or the tried-and-true family haulers from Honda? Overall, the Palisade seems like a great value, especially in the top level trims, offering all the tech, safety, and even luxury of much more expensive SUVs for under $50,000 and including Hyundai’s great warranty.
2020 Hyundai Palisade Review
The Hyundai Palisade is a replacement for Hyundai's current three-row SUV, the Santa Fe. The all-new Palisade boasts a fresh design, advanced technology, and all the convenience features you would expect in a family-friendly vehicle in the midsize-SUV segment.
Hyundai is bolstering the 2020 Palisade's flagship status by loading it with technology features sure to impress even the most finicky family. Front and center is a 10.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a Bluetooth system that supports two phone connections - one for audio streaming and one for making calls. Up to seven USB ports are available, ensuring that nearly everyone can keep their devices charged at the same time.
The Palisade's tech features also ensure that occupants are kept safe. Numerous advanced safety systems are standard, including blind-spot monitoring, lane centering, and forward collision warning and mitigation. Also included on every Palisade are a driver attention monitor and Safe Exit Assist, which sounds an alert if passengers are in danger of opening the door into an oncoming vehicle. Some trims also come with a sideview camera that activates when the turn signal is flicked on, but we haven't found this feature very useful in other cars.
This especially roomy interior cabin now accommodates 6-foot-tall passengers in any seat. It has 18 cubic feet of cargo space to spare behind the third row or 46 cubic feet with the second row folded. When comparing by the numbers, it's a give-and-take row by row with the segment's roomiest offerings.
But subjectively, the Palisade feels among the most spacious. It distributes its cabin volume well, utilizing smart packaging and design that both frees up storage space and helps emphasize a feeling of interior airiness. One notable example is the new push-button gear selector. It looks elegant, but it also saves a heap of space up front, opening up a large storage area between the front footwells.
Every Palisade is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 producing 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Hyundai's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system available as an optional extra. The AWD system gains a snow traction mode this year, which alters torque distribution and engine output to help drivers keep power on the road. There's even a locking differential for increased low-traction control.

After hard negotiations from 4 dealerships, We finally picked up the Limited Palisade this weekend. As we were picking it up, there were 3 families waiting in line to steal our SUV if we didn't go through with it. I tell ya what, it's a hot seller right next to the Telluride (1 month back order). It tells you something, the Koreans nailed this SUV on the mark. The SUV is simply amazing inside and out. Also, the MPG's are MUCH higher then rated by the automaker. We're getting 23 City and almost 31mpg on highway speeds of 55-65 speeds. We're coming from a 2015 Highlander where we had 24mpg Highway and terrible city. What a difference and the 3rd row seating is actually practical! Couldn't be happier.

I am so happy to see your review. I am trading in a '13 highlander tomorrow, but have yet to drive one thanks to quarantine.. I cannot wait to drive it for myself! I have been nervous about leaving Toyota as I have been a loyal customer for nearly 20 years now, but they have simply been "asleep at the wheel" while their competitors have been doing the work! I only hope the engine doesn't have any issues past the warranty and that resell value will not be a gut-punch.

I have to agree. Ford were SO conservative, both in waiting until their Explorer was really out dated, and then being super conservative on the refresh. Other than some more sporty engine options, which are limited in necessity for a three row crossover, I think they have some catching up to do. Boring exterior super dull and uninspired interior. Kia had to shut down and then limit ordering they are selling so well. My local Hyundai dealer seems to have plenty of Palisades coming in, but every time you drive by the lot they are all gone again. So clearly selling fast.

I really like all of Edmunds' video reviewers. But right now I want to extol the efforts of Elana Scherr, an informative judge of her automotive subjects who offers a lot of information that's easy to understand the first time through, gives her well-chosen opinions where appropriate, and who has a good sense of humor at all times. With no hemming and hawing. She's relatable and with just a touch self-deprecating humor when admitting, for example, that she's a shorter person, like almost half of the drivers in America, and appreciates it when car designers appear to have her, or those like her, in mind when they got down to certain details of accommodation.

Amazing the extra tech and comfort displayed by the new Palisade. Being Gen 1 Highlander owners, we had to wait till 2020 to get Carplay and with the new Highlander growing another 2 1/2 inches, it's little more than an inch shorter than this vehicle. My hope is,since Toyota is taking so long to bring this new Highlander to market(sales starting almost 2020), that they are looking at their competitor's significant improvement in safety tach and high-end interiors that Toyota will add these new features and interior to their new Highlander.

I have been trying to get this answered for a while so now that these are coming out perhaps you can help. From what I can tell (beyond styling and colors) the main differences between a loaded SX Telluride and a Limited Palisade is the following? 1. Digital IC 2. Shift Paddles 3. Powerfold 3rd row 4. Palisade is $800 more expensive. 5. Drive by wire shifter. Everything else seems to be styling related, anything I missed?

@@SSS-mp8th You're correct, at least according to the "build and price" tools for each vehicle. A fully loaded AWD SX Telluride with the prestige package and towing package makes the KIA comparable to the fully loaded "Limited" AWD Palisade. The MSRP for the Telluride is $47,330 while the Palisade comes in at $47,445. Of course, real world prices, especially given the massive demand for the KIA may tell a different story.

Obviously the KIA Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are going to be heavily cross shopped. Hyundai and KIA are extremely adept at building vehicles that share components and features and exist in the same larger product category that are different enough to appeal to different market sub-segments (e.g. Kia Sorento vs Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Stinger vs Genesis G70, etc.) In the case of the Telluride and the Palisade, the vehicles are virtually identical in all important respects with the Telluride projecting a more "rugged" vibe compared to the Palisade's "near luxury" look and feel. As far as MSRP's are concerned, there are ways to configure each to be a few dollars more or less than the other but the differences are hardly worth considering, especially since real world prices may differ significantly from MSRP's. To understand the difference it's important to note that the Telluride is a vehicle aimed squarely at the North American market and produced in West Point, Georgia. It's not even offered in Korea or other markets in Asia. The Palisade is built in Korea and aimed at a variety of international markets as well as North America, especially the Asian giant China. "Rugged" look and feel is very appealing in North America. The resemblance between the Telluride and the Range Rover, the epitome of "rugged" luxury is clearly not accidental. On the other hand, "luxury" without the "rugged" modifier has huge appeal in markets where affluence is relatively recent and still growing. There's no better way to demonstrate one's success in joining the growing middle class in Korea and China than driving a vehicle that spells luxury at a price that newly affluent consumers can afford. So just as the Telluride resembles the Range Rover, the quilted upholstery and powered control of the rear seats as well as the overall styling are reminiscent of German luxury crossovers. If I were in the market I'd be more drawn to the simpler and (imo) more elegant design of the Telluride. Hyundai styling always seems a bit "fussy" to me. Hyundai and brands like MB seem to equate quilted upholstery to luxury. To me, it reminds me of the furniture in my grandmother's living room. And I find the simpler manual method of raising and lowering the rear seats to be one less feature to go wrong. But different strokes for different folks. In any case the Korean twins set a bar for the 3 row crossover segment both in terms of features and pricing that other brands are having a tough time matching.

The new RWD vs this FWD system or how well it catches the need to switch more power to the rear and how well does it, if it does, pass power between rear and front wheels.

Hardly an ad...maybe she knows a lot of attention was given to ride during development because...she DROVE IT. She's says it rides really well and you don't get that if you aren't paying attention. Maybe it's because she, and basically ANYONE who knows anything about cars knows that Hyundai/Kia have former BMW M-Division head, Albert Biermann, as their head of ride/handling. Hyundai/Kia have been among the best balanced/driving in their segment - very European feeling but also comfortable. The Explorer is great, but that RIDICULOUS TABLET in the center console is a deal breaker for me..and I'm sure MANY others too..

The 2020 Explorer looks nice, but adding packages to get all the Safety Tech drives the Ford into the near-luxury or luxury price level. Look for big incentives on the Ford if you like the rear wheel drive Explorer.

chuckwalla 2 do you still not know what the interior of the new aviator looks like? Not to mention a much sportier exterior, not to mention another 110 HP standard. I don’t know what people are talking about but I find this palisade ugly. The exterior is meh, the front fascia is weird, and the interior is all high gloss stuff that looks expensive at a quick glance but comes off as cheap and tacky once you spend some time inside. It’s funny how if an American car had this interior it’d be typical tacky Americans but since its Korean every one of you falls in line to blow them and say what a great truck this is based on absolutely no proof whatsoever.

Have some fun there by making an appointment and test driving a Kona or any other Hyundai or non Hyundai vehicle we have there, but be sure to ask for me(Pete). “Just ask me about how much I bench”!!! Lol Most importantly, tell me what I can do for you so that you can have that Napleton experience with a new or used car in your driveway! Bam!!! 💪🏼🚘🏋🏻‍♀️
