In this video I am giving a 3 year review of my 2020 Hydro Blue Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. I give an overview of the mods I have done and how the truck was optioned when I got it. I walk through all of the problems I have experienced as well as future concerns. I also go over what I like about the truck and discuss what the future may bring. Applies to JL wrangler as well.

Nice thorough review! I just purchased a (1-owner) 2020 Rubicon Launch Edition about 6 months ago and it came with some major issues. Luckily, I purchased the MOPAR MaxCare warranty when I bought it, and it's already paid for itself because the truck needed a full transmission replacement. After that was finished, I noticed an oil leak, which turned out to be the rear main seal. Both items were covered under the warranty, but would have otherwise been thousands of dollars out of pocket. I worked with my local Jeep paint shop and they just replaced all my hinges (bottom-half of each hinge only), repaired some corrosion on the passenger door, and some on the hood. My local shop was pretty disorganized and the whole process took them 3 months before my JT was finally in the queue, and the repair/work took ~1.5 weeks for them to complete. This week, I started getting a warning message when starting the Jeep, saying that "aux switches temporary disabled, battery charging." After researching that issue, it's likely the main and/or aux batteries, which will cost ~$400 out of pocket to replace (not covered by MaxCare). I've never had so many issues with a vehicle before, let alone a vehicle this expensive, but am hopeful that it's just bad luck and I'll finally be able to enjoy it after I get all of the gremlins taken care of.

I think you made a great choice. Back when I was looking (April 2021) the Mojave wasn't even out yet. But then, neither was the Ford Bronco -- just 2 years of persistent/teasing BS/Fake News ("vaporware") Ford advertising hype & promises...but NO Broncos being made/delivered to anyone. So in the MID-size segment, only the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Chevy Colorado ZR2 were candidates -- a very short Short List for sure. Was living in CO (Springs) at the time and HAD there been a Mojave Gladiator available I woudl have considered it, as the Rubicon & Mojave are the 2 top-dog Gladiators -- the "luxury" High Altitude (HA) was the most expensive but way less capable, so I didn't even consider it. Anyway, given I was in CO, I thought the Rubicon was more appropriate for the high mountains passes and off-road trails CO is known for given that rock-crawling was WAY more likely than desert-running. Here In West TX now (ELP), with the desert here it's the other way around so a Mojave woudl have been more appropriate. I plan to move back to CO (Springs again!) in 2 years, so the Rubicon will be back at home up there, but I DO take it out in the desert here when I can. Rocky Mountain High, -- John Denver

I had a weird experience of being gifted a 2020 Jeep Gladiator in the same color. Maybe not the truck I would have chosen for myself, but you can't beat $free.99 ya know? Thanks for sharing, I have a 2020 JT as well, luckily I haven't experienced any significant issues. I did replace the steering box when the TSB was issued, also the start/stop does not work as the aux battery is always in "charging" mode. Interesting to hear about the oil filter, Ill make sure to let it idle for 20-30 secs before putting into D. Overall I love it minus the gas mileage, wish the tank was larger. :)

I had gorilla glass from factory. Took a rock low between wipers. 3 months after purchase. Hit the auto start and apparently that kicked defrost on at full power. As soon as I pulled out of driveway I heard the loud snap. I realized with my jk I could keep a lower temp and fan speed to preserve windshield until I could get repaired before it cracks. Winter time and high fan speed defrost did the windshield replacement damage 3 times in that manual transmission jk before I learned. Surprised Jeep engineers didn’t take that into consideration with JL/JT auto start.

I have a 2015 Hydro Blue JL 4-door Rubicon I ordered from the factory and took possession 1 Aug 2014. It was the only way to get what I wanted (auto temp, black hardtop and fenders, no leather, etc.). It has over 121K miles and I’ve had no major issues outside the warranty. The driver’s side head has a milling defect, but was replaced under warranty. I have it serviced according to the manual including the big 100K service which included drive train fluids. No major rust either…and it’s garaged. Yeah, they ride like a solid axle, short wheelbase vehicle…because they are. Yeah, I’ve had the windshield replaced about 2 times now, but I live in KY and it’s handled by my insurance. Honestly, I don’t think Jeep Wranglers (or similar platforms) have any more issues than any other American branded vehicle. I loved my 06 Tacoma…but Toyota has a serious frame rust issue that persists today. As I said, I live in KY and I know several people who work for the big Toyota plant in Georgetown…the frames still have issues on some vehicles. Nothing is perfect. They still have one of the highest resales of any vehicle! Jeeps are fun to drive, very iconic, get plenty of attention, and if that doesn’t work for you… “It’s a Jeep thing, you don’t understand.” 😂

I agree, no brand is without issues and they make so many of these vehicles there are bound to be bad days/issues. The paint bubbling on the aluminum panels is one of my biggest concerns, but that is covered for another year and a half so I’ll likely take it to the dealer before I hit the 5 yr mark to have it repaired. I live this truck, it is a blast, just wanted to put some info out there as it is likely not for everyone.

Thanks for sharing your experience of your Gladiator. I love my Hydro Blue Gladiator too! Mine is three years old and have going on 34,000 miles. I have an 2021 Overland built in Sept 2020. I have had leaking issues once with the glass too. Also had a valve cover engine seal come off and leaked oil and cause my engine to misfired. Also had a very rough idling at cold start that I think was the leftover issue from that. I got rough idling fixed last year. I do have concerns about the future too. I have heard many different rumors. I love my Jeep and want to take care of it. It is my only vehicle so it is my daily driver and like doing light offroading. I just had fun in Hocking Hills offroading in the woods. You should come next year in early October to the Hocking Hills Jeep charity run. So far, so good: Even though my windshield HAS been hit a few times: NO bullseyes or cracks -- at least not YET (31 months of ownership, 23K miles). Just one TINY speck in the glass (and some sand-blasting, as per usual on ANY vehicle I've had). As for Gorilla Glass, I think it's over-hyped and needs improvement, so were I needing a new windshield I'd probably just get an identical factory/OEM non-Gorilla Glass replacement. I bought a 23 Gladiator Rubicon in June of 23 so I've only had it for 7 months and have just under 6000 miles on it, so no problems so far other than a faulty level sensor in the fuel pump that made the gauge never show a full tank. That was replaced (the whole pump) under warranty, a bit of a inconvenience but painless. I bought the 70k 7 year warranty so I'm hoping if there are any major issues they'll happen before then, I really wish Mopar still offered the life time warranty I bought for my wife's 2018 Wrangler Sahara, that is peace of mind, I'll never get rid of that vehicle.

The valve train on the Pentastar is very complicated, but it has oil already in it when you start the engine. That's why when you drain it during an oil change, it has a never ending drip....There IS oil up in that valve train. These engines can go well past 300k miles. So it is not a design flaw. Just run the recommended 0w20. My old 3.8 on my JK has noisy valves when cold, too. It has about as simple a valve train as anything, along with a traditional filter. Yet it is still going strong at 193k miles. Unless you have had a problem, I wouldn't worry about it or lose sleep. One more thing...I change my oil in my Pentastars at 5k miles. That's not really necessary, but I do it anyway.

@@FRWD_FXLRST yeah, there is a lot of info out there on this topic and the newer ones have a change to the filter to add better anti drain back protection, but it is not the same as conventional filter.

Testing has showen that the oil filter is drained out at 20 minutes, it also looses all oil pressure, so any start after say 30 minutes, is a dry motor start, I use Lucas oil stabilizer at every oil change.

Sure you buy a Jeep for reliability, why not? And the "newer ones" you slam are the best Jeeps (talking about Wranglers & Gladiators, the "Classic" Jeeps) have ever been. My 2021 Gladiator (Rubicon, also in Hydro Blue Pearlcoat color) has been fine, although I do have the water leak mentioned (rear window glass/seal) -- will get it fixed at my local dealer shortly (still on OEM/factory warranty). Still, nothing serious has happened and I don't expect anything serious to happen. As for the 3rd generation Pentastar V6, it's one of the most reliable/durable V6s available. And I like it being NA (Naturally Aspirated) -- didn't want anything turbo or (Ford) "Eco Boost." ;-) And I've been on several long road-trips (3 states, driving on Interstates and state roads) and it's AS comfortable as my 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L/AWD was on those same trips -- I can't say I notice any difference, and the longer wheel-base of the Gladiator makes for smoother riding as well. Amazing. And no "wandering steering," either. NONE of that stuff some people criticize Jeeps for, especially the "newer ones." IMO, I very possibly would have had more trouble with the 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2 I WAS going to get back then (April 2021) instead of this...but really, who knows. NO brand is perfect. Whatever, I could not have made a better choice, as I was limited to the MID-size segment of "serious off-road-focused 4x4" SUVs and trucks -- HAD to cross-off the "serious" SUVs (Wranglers & Broncos) due to their anemic (3500lbs) towing capacities. Plan to keep my Gladiator for longer than I first thought given the still crazy over-priced auto-market we still have (got mine for WAY less than they cost today). But if I WERE to buy a new vehicle in the future, I'd likely get another Gladiator as I don't see my needs -- the reasons I got the Gladiator in the first place -- changing anytime soon, so only another Gladiator (Rubicon, or MAYBE a Mojave) would suffice in the future, too. The 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2s are way more improved over earlier models, but as impressive as they are on/off-road, I'm not sure I'd get a ZR2 over a Gladiator. As for a Ford Bronco, I had (and still HAVE) zero interest in them. BTW, my Gladiator is my only vehicle, so it's also my Daily Driver. Does THAT well also. And even though I've had it almost 3 years now, I still always enjoy driving it -- even if for no good reason at all. Or ANY reason. ;-) -- BR

@@jrmotorsports5532 I know...hope YOU know I wasn't being critical of your content as I was just relating my ownership experience of a "crap" Jeep. I say "crap" in jest though because some people call it that...saying I bought "Fiat/Chrysler crap" and "everyone knows they and Jeeps are crap." You know, the typical clueless/ignorant comments people who never owned a Jeep (or could even afford one) say, because they heard/read someone else saying it. MY Jeep has NOT been "crap" nor have any Jeeps my friends/acquaintances own. NONE are lemons. Minor issues, yes, but none I'd call crap. You can pay WAY MORE for crap though -- if you wish -- what, get a Mercedes G-Class 4x4, or maybe a Discovery? ;-) MY Gladiator hasn't been perfect, either...just close! But I CAN say that my 2006 Honda CRV I had some years back was one of the WORST vehicles I've owned as several (3!) MAJOR issues. On the other hand, my 2016 Honda Pilot only had one minor issue. So it's 50-50 for Honda there. My 2014 Subaru Crosstrek XV was issue-less...except the seats were terrible for long rides AND its" heater" barely kept the cabin "inhabitable" when temps were in the single-digits/zero or below zero -- as I sometimes experienced living in Colorado Springs, CO. Whatever, as I did with the Honda Pilot -- just in case (given my earlier experience with their CRV) -- I DO plan on getting an extended Mopar (not 3rd-party) warranty on my Gladiator -- also just in case.
