Today I’m going to cover the 2020 KTM 250 XC and 300 XC TPI bikes. I’ve got about 50 hours on these bikes and a few others and now I’ll share my thoughts with you. While they certainly aren’t perfect, the 250 XC is probably my favorite bike of all time. The 300 XC is right there just a touch behind it. Tons of stuff to get into.
Enjoy the video!
Karen (my wife), Kaylee, Konnor Kase, and Kenzie (the kids) thank you for using these links. It is one of the ways we are supporting our family right now.

You’re definitely putting out unique content. I don’t want to see a bike whipping over whoops sections, I want to see all there is to know about living with one. This channel has made up a foundational chunk of my education on dirt bikes. Your hard work on the channel is very apparent, and I hope this continues to bring you joy for a long time to come.

OK listen , I've been toying around with getting back into the whole Dirt Bike thing after a LONG hiatus from the sport. For me this tutorial on the KTM's by this guy is the the best and will be the reason why i go buy a KTM. It's not because i have the cash to do it but i've watched all kinds videos of this bike and for me The KTM has it all minus the kick starter but maybe it's time to see and listen to someone else's opinions on these newer bikes. I'm coming from a whole list of bikes and i'm showing my age ; Harley Davidson 250 , 2 Suzuki RM 400's , Husky 390 and lastly a CR 250. So Thank You to this guy and T he Dirt Bike Channel for simplifying the process for me . I'm looking to having some fun again !

You said they are not perfect, define perfect? I think from your review they are the best bikes ever created up to now. Things like clutches, brakes, and suspensions are damn near at the height of engineering right now, MX bikes came of age in the 80's and we are right there at Culmination in Engineering Evolution, would love to own one, great channel, you have a great channel, and love that you have sweepstakes.

Some may disagree with this statement but... I’m a littler guy about 5’8” but any bike I’ve owned. I instantly move the bars a setting forward. This is so it forces me to move up further on the seat when I corner therefore putting more weight over the front of the bike. It makes the front end not push as much in corners👍🏻

Looking to get first bike for trail riding and think i'll outgrow the 150 too quickly. As you said it's a big investment (£8,300 here in the UK!) and i'm looking at keeping it long term. Cheers.

Great review. Hey if you like the ODI but want more cushion than stock grips, I highly recommend the ODI Rogue. I’ve used them in a number of hard enduros and bunch of harescrambles in every condition imaginable and love them. I’m prone to getting blisters and these have done wonders for me. And incredibly durable for such a cushy grip.

You say you hate that they dropped the kick starter but what good it is? If your battery is dead, you have no fuel pressure, no ecu power, exc. Unless your battery is just too dead to start but still enough charge to run the computer and fuel pump, I see no use. Can anyone shed light on this?

Hey Kyle, you mentioned you run the air fork much lower than the stock setting (139psi). Just wondering what your base compression setting is when running the psi lower than what's recommended stock
@hoptard
@hoptard 4 жыл бұрын
WP valving has always sucked......the Air psi setting (front end sag) is the same as the spring preload (if it were springs) which keeps one from bottoming out not less than 1 to 1.5" from fork foot (and not for comfort), the compression and rebound control the comfort....if you go lower with your preload psi (you better be riding at a slower speed) you'll blow through through the stroke faster ending in disaster (that the compression and rebound can't react accordingly). Think of it this way, if one is a fat ass and they're sitting on the incorrect (too low) shock spring rating, compression/rebound at the shock becomes basically useless and fatass will still bottom out....ending in disaster.

Washing powder mixed with dish detergent & warm water, soak on bike and powerwash off. Might need a handbrush for bad spots. Dry with compressed air or leafblower and give the whole bike a coat of dwf/dw40 etc. The film of oil will help with your next ride so dirt does not stick well to the bike.

Hey Kyle, i had a 2017 ktm 300 xc, put 200 hours on it, 3 pistons never touched the bottom end, , i am east coast canada, lots of dirt roads and atv trails, not much single track but some steep and rocky stuff, i actually went the other way and ran a 48 sprocket and the bike worked well for me, i am more of a 4th gear up rider on the power, even with the gear change i had no issues doing steep stuff, i am a former 450 rider so a little clutch work is no prob on the steep nasty stuff, just sold it, i want a new one, ad cant decide if the 250 is what i want or to go to the 300 again, do you prefer the 250 in more open faster riding? i like a bile with punch, was debating on the 350 xcf, but i am almost 47, still very fast rider, but the 2 strokes dont wear me out like the 4 strokes, what do you think................should i go for the 250??

i bought the 250, for woops or faster stuff the engine characteristics seem better for that type of riding, 300 for first gear and second all the way just depends on what type of riding you do

Hey great info👍👍. My question is, Does it have enough low end grunt to get my big 230lb butt into a wheelie for a, no run up log hop? I currently ride a 2019 WR 450 F but, i am looking for a lighter bike. In your opinion, would this be a good upgrade. I am in Texas and don’t really do any super hard riding.

Hey Dave, I’m 230 and just bought 2020 300xc tpi. As long as powervalve screw is flush with cases, yes. Mine was cranked in 3 entire turns upon pickup at dealer. It will easily loft logs. It’s fast and linear but in my opinion doesn’t have super mid range. Bottom and top really strong. Mid smooth. The bike will not do anything to surprise you other than handle all terrain perfectly and well composed.

Was kinda expecting a more in depth view of the differences (riding and hardware) between the 250 and 300

Please explain the difference between the 4 stroke 300 and the 300 TPI bikes. Why don't you ride the 4 stroke ones? Are the TPI bikes better then the 4 strokes in your opinion?

What is the reason you like the XC versus XC-W? Thanks Kyle!

I would like to know this as well. I haven't ridden both 2020 models, but I have a hunch the 2020 XCW would be a better bike for Kyle. Over the years I have ridden/owned both XC and XCW (now Beta, but going back to XCW for 2021). If the reviews are correct on the 2020 XCW being awesome through the whoops, staying planted, better gear ratios, and unbeatable PDS for rock gardens, KTM may truly have the ultimate out of the box enduro weapon for 2020. The XC's always had some compromise for me in really rough conditions. Even Johny Walker went back to PDS (although we know it is not stock suspension). Of course Grahm Jarvis does well on linkage, but he could win on a KX 450, and he has the factory set up as well (watch his helmet cam vids and observe the suspension action, it is incredible).

It would be nice if they came with skidplate but they would come with plastic ones and not everyone wants that, for example my dad has had plastic skidplates on two different bikes, the first one he put a plastic skidplate on didnt even last one race, he has the half of it that stayed on the bike hanging in his garage, the second bike is a dualsport that he didnt plan to ride as hard but when I got older and started to catch up with him he would be forced to push a bit harde and the skidplate has fallen off and deformed itself a number of times now. And also on the first one, he was reluctant to put an aluminum one on because of the noise and the frame has major dents because of it, but finally he put an aluminum one on and there is a gnarly dent it it, if it wasnt there the frame would be no more. I've seen so many times where plastic ones didnt hold up to hard riding and I just wouldn't want to ride without an aluminum one.

Agree 100% with your dislikes. Common Ktm, let’s get it together... so close to a perfect bike, let’s not screw up basics like spark arrestors and kickers..
