For the 2018 model year, KTM released the fuel and oil injected two strokes. It's called Transfer Port Injection (TPI). They were the first major manufacturer to produce this on a production dirt bike. With the 2022 models just around the corner, it marks 5 years of TPI bikes.
Ever since their inception, all sort of myths have flown around the internet, and many people have been scared to purchase this so called "un-proven" technology. Because I've owned nearly 15 of these bikes and ridden more than two dozen of them, it's time to help set the record straight.
Inside my small circle of riders, we've accumulated about 2000 engine hours on these bikes. Nearly everyday for the past 4-5 years I've answered questions in my email regarding these TPI bikes. These are the top 10 myths I've identified, given thousands of interactions with the viewers over these past five years.
Enjoy the video!

for the running oil in the gas myth, TPI stands for Transfer Port Injection which means it injects the fuel right before the air enters the cylinder. Running oil in the gas literally only lubricates the cylinder wall, it never even touches the the crank or rod bearings so it is a huge waste of time and can actually cause injector issues because they aren't designed to run oil through them.

Excellent video neighbor! I added another horse 🐴 to my stable in February. A 21’ 250XC. It, along with my 19’ xcw have NEVER had a problem. They both run fantastic. I’m convinced those few people with problems have messed and tinkered with the fuel system: ie adding oil to the fuel, air screw too far out, etc. Some people can’t just start their bikes and ride them. They feel they must monkey 🐒 with things that don’t need touching. I love TPI and the thought of playing with a carb, makes me wanna 🤮

Kyle.... just a comment not related to the TPI you discuss here. I believe you need to cover 1 significant aspect of riding which I have found to be critical to the sports safety, enjoyment, longevity and cost: it's the company you regularly ride with. Riding mates have helped me no end in numerous ways from making sure I got home safe after a crash to saving me from making bad decisions on purchasing, on riding on the trail and maintenance. They are the glue that has kept me there. You might need a whole episode in this. Cheers and thanks for the brilliant channel.

My 2020 blew up at 53 hours, just sayin! My theory, the oil pump didn’t like the cold weather (28 degrees) and it wasn’t equipped to pull the thicker oil at such temp. Yes, I used good oil 😉

I added a jd jetting power surge 6 which is an inexpensive way to add (or reduce) fuel at certain throttle positions. 2020 tx300. I do consider it worth it. @@WASemiHardEnduro Makes sense to me as it does feel different. The first quarter throttle is less responsive/accelerates more slowly. However it's anti stall characteristics at 1/4 or less throttle is better not worse. You can clutch less.... and simply move from 0-1/3 throttle when in first gear gnar. This is why Kyle probably recommends the different throttle cam.... all you really would need to get more response at part throttle.... It took me a slight adjustment for me but the TPI is much better for gnar imo. Plus, its so easy to just ride and forget about oil, I fill up at the gas station alot now. I'm going to baja and I don't have to worry about carrying alot of oil, and can fill up whereever.

@@DirtBikeChannel Kyle, out of our group of 7 to 12 riders, the machines having some issues are the TPI motors and the bikes with air fork issues. That is our experience thus far. And the 4 TPI bikes in our group are 2021 Husky (1) and 2021KTM (3) Just giving you what we are experiencing. I appreciate and admire your 10 myths but I agree with the Dirt Magazine evaluation when they said that the TPI 2 stroke isn't ready for show time just yet. I also see that for the 2022 models that TM is offering 2 strokes with the choice of TPI or carb.for the buyer. For every 1 TPI bike they sell, 9 sold are carbed. you mentioned that these bikes don't need an aftermarket ecu to run well, and that if they run craps its due to something else. i've read through countless forums with people experiencing the same issue as me...a random flat spot/bog in the mid range. seems to a very common complaint among tpi owners. like the bike is suddenly starved of fuel. one guy had tried all the common things, fuel filters, sensors ect, had been in talks with KTM and his dealer, and even took his dealer to the track so he could ride the bike himself and experience the issue first hand. after being told by KTM that is was just a "characteristic of the bike" he bought a Get ignition system and it cured the problem instantly. you also put a Get ecu on your 300 a couple of years ago after it ran like crap.

Either the Husqvarna TE250/300i or KTM 250/300 XC-W are the best bikes out there for trails and enduro or general recreational riding. My sons friend who is 14 and a little shorter than you rides a CRF250F and hates it. He gets on my sons TE250i and just loves it. He also rode my TE300i and his dads 300 XC-W and is saving his money to get a TPI 2 stroke. The 250F is a generic trail bike that excels at nothing. After 30 minutes of riding you will out grow it and be bored out of your mind. Take the time to ride the 2 stoke slow and easy and learn how it reacts and feels. Work your way into it’s capabilities. It is a high performance dirt bike but can easily be ridden at every level.

What kind of range are the 250 tpi getting on a stock tank? My 2021 xtrainer gets no more than 40 miles on a tank and that's with the smart carb.

Depends on riding conditions of course but I’m getting between 90-120 on my 300. For whatever reason my sons 250 get a little less.

I'm old, like I've been riding over fifty years. I grew up on two strokes. I still have a 2000 WR200, which I still ride occasionally and love/hate lol. It never feels the same one day to the next, even to the point of one morning to the arvo. Are the new TPI's more consistent in their behaviour. I've been off dirties for a few years bar the odd run on the WR. I'm totally over riding on the road, here in Aus it's gotten crazy with the law and cameras. Even most track days are a shit fight now. So I've been thinking about a new dirty. I still love the two strokes and would be going that path on a new bike. The Husky 300 is winning so far. I keep thinking about the 350 and telling myself to go with my head and get the 350 4 banger. But my heart says I'll always regret not going the 300 TPI. Thoughts ?

I unfortunately bought one of these pieces of crap. 2022 KTM 300XC TPI. The dealers cannot fix it and KTM will not cover anything under warranty even though it ran like shit from the 1st day. I will never buy a KTM again. I was warned I would regret it.

I bought a brand new 2017 KTM 200 and it's was a big lemon and just would not run properly. I just got a dud. However, I'd still buy another KTM as there's the odd dud in any dirt bike or machine .

Not true about the ecu, Kyle. My bike did run like absolute crap until I got the ecu reflashed by tsp. Sure, a majority of them run fine, but not all of them.

TPI is gone for 2022 anyway, it was bad idea to start with. KTM finally admitted it. We'll have TBI and back to the mixture.

gonna be a game changer when KTM and the other brands slap on e-start and tpi for the motocross versions. 85 with tpi pulling away from a race built 250?

For five years now tpi models, but why are ktm 2-stroke motocross models still on the carburetor? Power? Reliability? Can anyone tell if these tpi are so excellent ..

when it comes to tpi they all say they are the same in terms of feel, only the weight... When it comes to carburated, the 300 has more low end torque and it's a bit more powerfull... other than that.... the bikes are basically the same

We have one of each. Very similar. Only real difference we can tell is the low end grunt on gnarly technical stuff and steep big hill climbs. But it is not a huge difference if your a lighter rider. I’m 220 and can notice it a little more than my son can.

Can we have ten issue facts about those bikes too. Was there a tpi ktm that drove the bike backwards when in 1 gear 😄 or was that a 300 carbed version. Reverse gear ?
