I don't know how I missed this video, Tony, but it is now of some significance to me. I have a Duke 390 which needed some light attention. To my surprise a KTM shop has opened in the northern Thai city, where I spend most of the year. And even more surprising was that the 390 wasn't the biggest bike they had. A Duke 790 caught my eye, then I spied the Adventure 790 and even better the R version. As the bike is cobbled together in the Philippines, there is no import duty in Thailand, meaning it's around the same price as in GB. No discounts, mind. It has given me something to think about. It looks stunning, ever more so in the 'flesh'. I would really like one. It would be perfect for some of the rough roads you come across here.

Excellent video, really good. Totally agree with the psychological point, had that issue with my 1290 Adv yet I’m an off road vet (UK). In the mix is surely road ability and comfortable very long stretches, where the 1290 shines of course. Please do an extended off road test if you can, i will certainly watch it. Ride safe.

As you i'm not a fan of orange color but i've buy one. I prefer round mirror than design mirror from the S model. With Ktm tank bag, little cheap givi top box for one helmet when i stop, sw-moteck central stand, sw-moteck side rack and next step is kriega luggage, of course. The short windshield is nicer then a tallest and he say me "don't ride too fast". Full consumption 3,8l to 4,5l for 100km, give me about 400 to 450km before fueling in the real life. I have done 6000km since January 2020 with 3 months without riding because of... I ride with offroad throttle response is so much sweet to ride. Sorry for my bad English;

I'm getting used to the orange ;) and don't apologise for your English, its very good. We here in the UK are generally very lazy when it comes to learning other languages.

The quick shifter is not standard on the R or S. It weighs a bit more then the T7 but it also has 1.3 more gal. of fuel so they are very close. I too love the engine in my R, plenty of power that makes it feel like an ADV sport bike.
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I stand corrected on the quickshifter. The bikes usually come out of KTM bog standard, so i wrongly assumed it to be part of the spec. Slapped wrist. However I did take the weights directly from each manufacturers spec sheet, and I’m not concerned with the dry weight. But they are too close to call. Yes exactly, feels like a big dirt bike

I’m actually glad I found this video! You might be the only one to ever cover how the R did on the street and spoke about touring! Everyone else wants to show Offroad, but I live in the Midwest over here in the states. My riding environment sounds the same as yours. I’ve got to travel a ways to get to gnarly dirt. Super glad you made this video! Now that you reviewed the Tiger 900, which is your favorite between these two?
@mancavemoto3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I found the same, all the R videos are about its offroad capabilities, which although great are not that relevant to me. The suspension is an improvement over the standard model, so I was keen to see how it performe as an all round bike. A difficult call, but for me i'd go with the KTM. It just feels like a smaller more nimble bike. Despite the looks that saddlebag tank design is genius, it keeps the COG low and makes the bike feel considerably lighter than it is. I've just fitted the ergo seat to my standard 790 Adventure and its a real all day mile muncher now. Thanks for commenting, Ride Safe!

I found the R too tall. The bike is a bit too heavy for me green laning also and not very comfy for long distance touring. Just a personal thing but the new 690 Enduro r is loads of fun on back lanes and way more capable on unsurfaced tracks.....no good for monster mile touring of course but great for everything else👍
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
Fair enough! I actually found this more comfortable on long journeys than my Tiger800. So a lot of it is down to the individual

Not surprised you like it, it's an awesome bike. Felt right at home on the R, until I tried some urban filtering -then the extra height became a worry. And then I found the S copes almost as well with that kind of easy off-road back-lane scratching that we obviously both like, but is an excellent touring road bike that makes my commute a joy as well. Ended up spending (a little) less on the bike itself by buying the S but added some luggage. Haven't managed to find the limits of the S suspension, it's set up nicely for my pace on New Zealand roads. I bought the bike with a Touratech aluminium top box and then added SW Motech removable pannier racks, but with Kriega OS soft bags at the sides and a US-10 as a tank bag. They make for a very versatile combo.
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
I liked it more than i thought I would. What was the height worry when filtering, was it bars at car wing mirror height? Just interested. There is a deal in the UK at the moment which means the price difference between the R ans ‘S’ is much less, which is why I thought it was perhaps better value. That’s not to say of course that the s isn’t a capable machine
@aeon87214 жыл бұрын
@@mancavemoto not mirrors and bars, my short legs! On the R I have to do a little shimmy to the left to put a foot down, so coming to a stop needs a plan. Sometimes you have to stop quickly when between two rows of cars and if you get it wrong you can overbalance into one. Or under a truck. I can get the flat of either foot or ball of both on the ground on my S. So the S gave just a little extra confidence in town traffic. And if I ever want a suspension upgrade, there is a very good suspension tech right nearby.

Good vid, I enjoyed watching it. I’ve been watching a bunch of reviews of this and the Tenere and it’s a tough decision when you won’t be able to ride both first. I’m about 90% decided on one of these, mainly because half the time I plan on using it like a big dirt bike, and I just think this’ll be more capable. This looks like it’ll be better for a pillion too.
@mancavemoto3 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! that was my thinking, i liked the extra power, the riding modes particularly the cornering ABS and traction control. I ride all year round so those are important in poor weather.

I really like the look of KTM bikes and all the reviewers seem to think they're great but I still have a problem getting over the *KTM == Keep Taking Money* part - in that they have a reputation of spending more time at the dealer, rather than on the road. They need to shake that reputation. I really can't take the risk, especially as I need to use my bike every day.
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
Yep and I think that’s the problem with reputations like that, they are easy to gain and very very difficult to shake. I don’t think in general they have any more problems that many other marques, but it’s the kind of reputation that sticks. My Triumph Street Twin had more recalls than my KTM 1050 for example
@Howling-Mad-Murdock3 жыл бұрын
Andy P I’ve had 2 ktms and my mates laughed and said exactly that, ktm stands for keep taking money. So far, touch wood, I’ve had the last laugh, because I have never had an issue. Both mine have been enduro bikes, so basically a full on race bike, and you’d think they’d be a bit fragile. So far, as tough as old boots.

Hi Tony, I rode the standard version of this just over a year ago. The only real issue I had was the front end dive under braking. It seemed to think it was a professional footballer! The Dealer said Bike was in std set up and said this is normal!? The low down fuel tanks may look slightly odd, but they work really well as you said. Would be interesting to see your opinion on the new Tiger 900. I have ridden the GT Pro and found it epic! Need to try the Rally Pro just to make sure........

I’ve heard that, and the forks on the R do a much better job. I’m trying to sort a Tiger900 at the moment for a test.

I rode the 790 Duke road bike. I thought that was really good. Probably best I don't test ride this, because I don't like being high up. High centre of gravity and big wheels , the steering always seems vague (compared to roadsters). Plus I can't easily flat foot, and it's hard getting my "leg over" !!
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
The tank keeps that centre of gravity low, and the steering is anything but vague, but yes there is no denying it’s a tall bike
@karlosh92864 жыл бұрын
@@mancavemoto I haven't tried the 790 Adventure. I did find I wasn't keen on bends on a CB500X and a Tiger 900, maybe it's me. I'm more comfortable on roadsters.

Tony, I can't get the fuel connector off the fuel rail on my 2017 Triumph Street Cup. I purchased a special pliers to enable pressing the 2 release buttons on each side of the connector. Some technicians have said that they remove the 18 mm bolt on the other end of the hose attached to the fuel pump housing. I am nervous about removing that bolt since I don't know the torque spec to reinstall it. I have a Haynes manual and it does not list it.
@bill_43594 жыл бұрын
I got it off with the new pliers and whole lot of grunt. Haha. I am putting on a X- Pipe.
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
They can be temperamental, and need a little help. Maybe a little leverage from a flat screwdriver wrapped in a rag under the connector body? You’ll still obviously need to press the release. I’ll see if I have the torque setting for that bolt, I can imagine it will be that much

New bike maybe? Never ride one, but sat on one in store, and it feels very skort compared to my tiger800. The adventure r looks awsome, but the price here is high, same as the tiger 900, about 17-18000£.
@mancavemoto4 жыл бұрын
It’s certainly on the radar, and yes the shorter feel does appeal to me, it makes it quite nimble considering it’s got a 21 inch front wheel. There is another bike that is tugging at my heart strings too

Drove both Tiger 900 great bike smooth, I would say Similar to BMW feel great for touring maybe a little trail say 80/20 and so is the 790S. The 790 R is a real 50/50 likely the most capable Adventure bike off road on the market currently and pretty damn good on road. Yes it’s a tall bike I’m 6’1” and just touch my feet flat. center of gravity is low so it feels lighter and more manoeuvrable than bike of similar weight
