2020 Lexus LX 570 Review Towing Enclosed Trailer: Can This J200 Luxo Land Cruiser Actually Tow?

The 2020 Lexus LX 570 is based on the J200-series Toyota Land Cruiser but with a unique suspension that #Lexus calls AHC - Adjustable Height Control. The hydraulic suspension adjusts for height and damping, but reduces towing capacity from 8,100 lbs in the Toyota Land Cruiser down to 7,000 lbs in the LX 570. In any case, is the 2020 Lexus LX 570 a good tow vehicle, assuming you stay within those limits? How hard is it to access the hitch and hook up a trailer?

Towing my fully loaded 24' race car trailer over 8,500 lbs with my 2016 LX 570 without any problem, it just need sway control and weight distribution hitch to be stable due to short wheelbase. I run 70mph on highway with MPG about 9 to 9.5. I once need to rush and and drove 75-80mph, the car feel totally OK and stable but MPG really sucks. I know someone tow a 10,000 lbs RV, no problem at all. The key is to have a good weight distribution hitch with sway control.

We towed all the time with our 2009 LX570. And now with our 2017 LX570. They make a fantastic tow rig, the motor has plenty of power. And the AHC makes it amazing at towing. The 2016+ have larger brakes which are very noticeably better. ❤

I like how you say the AHC reduces the towing when the LX570 was rated for 8500 lbs in 2010 with the same AHC system and it has the exact same axle weight ratings as the LC.

That's what Lexus told us at the time... not sure what else changed from 2010 to 2020 model years that would reduce it, given it's all the same generation of truck, but the specs are the specs.

@@OutMotorsports Im not arguing the specs. Im just saying, I dont really think it had anything to do with AHC, unless there was some safety requirement around the AHC system failing while towing in J2807.

Did you put ahc in low when hooking up trailer then allow ahc to raise to normal and compensate for tongue weight? Did you shift to manual mode and lock the transmission out of its higher gears? hmm....

Yes, the owner's manual states that you should drop AHC to Low and then raise to Normal once you are all hooked up, which we did. We ran the transmission in both Drive and Sport. Manual gear selections weren't necessary if left in Sport and it did not choose too high of a gear on its own to cause lugging or any other issues, so there wasn't a need to shift manually. Going down a long grade - sure, pick your gears to help with engine braking!

The manual for this vehicle claims it has automatic trailer sway control by adjusting the braking and torque to each axel When sway is detected. Did you try this?

I did not - that's some tech that is nice to have, but I'm not actively looking to try out on any towing test as that'd generally mean the trailer is improperly loaded or I'm towing in ridiculously windy conditions. Watch tongue weight and use a hitch with weight distribution/sway control and shouldn't have to try it ;-)

Apologies if I missed it, but what are the dimensions of the trailer there? I think I heard near 7k lbs in total weight, what is the height and length of that beautiful car hauler.

It's a 20' box with 4' v-nose... total length with the hitch/frame up front is about 27'. It's 6.5' tall inside so overall height is that plus whatever the tires add... maybe 7.5' total? Will have to measure.

@@OutMotorsports gotcha, thanks. That’s a pretty sizable trailer for a tow rig like that. Looks like it performed admirably but yeah I think I agree that regular towing may warrant a vehicle with wider track and longer wheelbase. Great review!

It’s about the same size as a 27fb airstream tt that ih8mud forums show as being towed by the lx570 with zero issues on the highway, mountains, etc

Wow, longer than 27' from tongue to taillights must be quite the sight behind a Highlander. Any idea on your overall length and weight?

@@OutMotorsports it looks huge. 24’ with V Nose Box Trailer. I don’t go fast and the trailer brakes make it pretty manageable. Weight is always under 12,000 so I don’t get too crazy.

I do. It is built for families with 6 or more people who also want to off-road and/or tow a trailer. Not many vehicle options available if you need to carry lots of people and off-road. It is one of the few that can do both. Also, officially Lexus says to use 91+ octane fuel, but in reality you can use 87 without any issues. It is literally the same engine as the Sequoia and Land Cruiser. I have over 150k on mine and used 87 octane. It will be 381HP/401 ft lb when using 87 octane vice 383HP/403 ft lb when on 91 octane.
