The Toyota Land Cruiser has been a favorite off-road 4x4 vehicle for some 60 years. The Lexus LX 570 is a more luxurious version of the same vehicle. But there are significant differences, too, so I drove both of them up my Ramp Travel Index (RTI) ramp to see which one articulates better in a frame-twist off-road situation.

Through its 60 years the Land Cruiser has morphed through numerous generations, surviving and thriving through the SUV segment's "mall wagon" phase and managing to stay true to itself despite the rise of crossovers. This 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser is a Heritage Edition model that celebrates that past while also making itself even more well-suited to overlanding, an off-road pastime that has always existed but only recently got a good publicist.
The 2020 Lexus LX 570 is built on the same 200-series Land Cruiser chassis, but the LX has a shorter history that only dates back to 1996 LX 450 that was based on the 80-series Land Cruiser. Back then, the LX wasn't very different. It had little more than cladding, a Lexus badge and a higher price. The amount of styling differentiation and luxury specialization has increased since then, and it's now gotten to the point that they some don'r realize that they are basically the same vehicle.
One big point of difference is their suspension that underpins them. They use the same layout and share most of their parts, but for a few significant differences. The Land Cruiser employs standard springs and shock absorbers, but it also has KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), which is set of hydraulically-linked stabilizer bars that automatically disconnect off-road.
The LX 570 has Adaptive Variable Suspension with 4-Wheel Height Control, which is totally different. This system consists of hydraulic cylinders where the shocks would go, and these can be lengthened or shortened to make significant height adjustments. But the damping valves so no reside in these struts even though they look like shock absorbers. Instead, their movements pump fluid back through the height control piping to remote-mounted damping valves mounted along the frame rails. The idea is to create superior ride comfort while retaining off-road capability and adding a height control function that can raise the vehicle more then 2 inches when the going gets tough.
Obviously, this suspension difference begs a question: Which suspension will articulate more and drive farther up my RTI ramp? Better performance here translates directly into better off-road capability in frame-twist situations.
The idea of an RTI ramp is simple. It creates an artificial but repeatable frame-twist situation that allows you to safely reach the point of maximum suspension flex and quantify that through a simple measurement. Numerical scores are based on a vehicle’s performance on a 20-degree ramp, an angle that was chosen some time ago and works well for stock vehicles.
Why am I doing this? I love this stuff. I'm a former suspension development engineer that spent most of my career developing off-road focused trucks and SUVs. Later, I somehow found my way into auto journalism, and for several years I created a popular photo feature called a Suspension Walkaround for Inside Line, a now-defunct offshoot of Edmunds.com (no relation). Today I have resumed writing these features under the name Suspension Deep Dive for Autoblog. I'm also doing video versions here on this channel.
But I'm also known for a series of RTI blog posts and Instagram shots featuring numerous off-road vehicles posing on this very RTI ramp. I didn't know where to buy such a ramp when I first got interested in doing this, so I designed one myself, bought all the metal, cut it to size, and had a friend of a friend weld it together. My previous employer was tired of it being in the way, so it's now with me at home, where I'm starting to re-build my database with new vehicles. I'll be keeping track of everything I measure and will be calling my database the Flex Index.
I never seemed to have the time, the equipment, or the confidence to get in front of the camera, but I got over that by hosting at least 80 professionally-produced videos over the last three years on the Edmunds.com You Tube channel. 3:50 its a legal requirement in australia and most countries that vehicles with active suspension must raise the rear first and lower the front first due to headlight height dazzling oncoming traffic

That's the dumbest regulation ever... What person decides to suddenly change their ride height while driving through traffic? Plus air suspension never lets you use the max clearance setting when driving over a certain low speed. Making that regulation even more pointless, as the dazzling could only occur at circa 10 mph, in which its not that much of an issue. Stupid regulations, cba with all this bureaucracy ruining cars, the EU especially have sucked all the joy out of new cars.

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon has a longer wheel base and the suspension is setup for towing and payload and is capable off-road. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon years 2018+ have a CTI flex ramp score of 489 with sway bar connected & 636 with sway bar disconnected. I am a fan of all the 4x4 vehicles. Thank you for the real-world science test.

I absolutely love my LX... because it is based on the LC, but I have the old 100 series. Toyota makes the best off road and Overland vehicle on the planet. Reliability alone is why it is THE vehicle you see around the planet in the most extreme conditions, where people's lives depend on it. I certainly wouldn't trust anything Italian like a Jeep for reliability.

@@DanEdmunds Dan, about the LX570. Was it in low range when you went up the ramp? Because apparently when put in low range the car's AHC will go into an "extra high" mode.

@@electrikoptik I played with that, and it seems that there have been operational changes since it was introduced in 2010(?). I wanted to test the LOWEST mode that would clear the ramp, and as you can see, there's isn't much margin here, so I'm there. A higher setting would have produced a worse number.

I love the land cruiser. But a wrangler would absolutely destroy this. Live axles front and rear and disconnecting sway bars. Not shot for the land cruiser. I would bet the wrangler go do right over top before it lifts a tire. Land Cruiser though, such a nice all around vehicle.

Thank you for this engaging analysis. Could you do a wheels-off review of the Land Cruiser 200’s suspension sometime? The KDSS is pretty special. As they say in Australia: If you want to go to the Outback, go in a Land Rover. If you want to come back from the Outback, go in a Land Cruiser.

The bumpers were a lot of it. Also high mode. If you raise a car with air suspension, you do it by making the springs stiffer and less able to compress. That ruins articulation. Now, if the LX had had its normal bumpers, I could have cleared the ramp in normal mode, which has less air in the air springs, which makes them softer. In all likelihood this same truck might have come very close the the TLC if I could have run it up the ramp in normal mode because the springs are softer and more compliant in that height mode.

Yes you're right when the rear goes up the front dives down a little before going up! Had a 2010 LX570 and always noticed that.

Hey Dan, I’ve been trying to convince someone to RTI a 4Runner TRD Pro vs 4Runner TRD Off Road. I have a OR but no access to a Pro or I’d do this video myself. I think OR is better than pro for off-roading and an RTI would help me win that argument. Can you do it? Might get good views for you too. Go KDSS!

Very interesting and informative. Would be great to get a standard LX570 with no sport bumper and see with the suspension in normal mode whether there is better articulation. I have a LX570 and must way the places it goes with road tires is impressive. I had a LC100 1HDFTE with rear diff lock before and it felt like a more capable rig, but I do think there would be situations where the CRAWL control on the newer cruiser/LX would be an advantage. Another note, you definitely feel the extra weight of the LX570 offroad vs the LC100.

I can say having had 2 different LC100's in the past ('99 without AHC and 06" with AHC), the non AHC Cruiser had better articulation offroad, but the AHC rig had better ground clearance, handing and comfort.

Hi Dan, Great video and comparison!! My question to you is that why didn't you directly measure the distance on ramp, rather than measuring the perpendicular and then calculating the hypotnuse? Was it a limitation of the length of the measuring tape you were using?

Because the ramp doesn't come to a point. It's got a blunt nose. Even though its an extra step, the climb distance I get this way is what it would have been if the ramp came to a sharp point.

I’ve got a 2019 land cruiser and a 2014 Lexus lx 570 sport edition and I love both. I use the land cruiser for hill climbing in the desert and the lx 570 for speeding on the highway

Why didn't you lock the diffs? The toyota at least would climb all the way no prob

its easy to find the maximum suspension flex point without lockers. That way, he knows when the wheels are lifting. If you are trying to get over something, then you just want to keep moving even if the wheels go up. But in this case it was not about climbing the ramp but finding the max flex before wheel lift.

The point isn’t to just climb the highest on the ramp. You have to climb until the left rear tire is just barely touching the ground

That’s a feature on Lexus on my aunties ls460 the headlights move as you turn the steering wheel and does that when I start the engine

God, I know there are many good vehicles out there that I like G-Wagon, some Rolls Royce, Bentleys, Dodge demon, etc. However, all i'm asking for is one of these two vehicles in my life. Is that too much to ask? This is absolutely a very good channel!

Why? The 4 runner isn't as capable as the 200. It's a great vehicle, for sure, but it's got less of everything that makes LCs, LCs.
