With so much emphasis on three-row SUVs these days, it’s easy to forget that their smaller siblings will easily satisfy the needs of most Canadians.
Unless you need space to shuttle more than four people with any frequency - in which case you should be shopping for a minivan - a small SUV will handle just about anything thrown its way with very few sacrifices. That’s especially true of the top-of-the-line trims, with some entries coming close to premium levels of comfort, quality and refinement.
For this comparison, we’ve rounded up the latest and greatest versions of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5 - four of the best the segment has to offer. All sporting all-wheel drive and specced in their priciest packages, this quartet is certainly worth considering in such a highly competitive segment. But we don’t believe in participation trophies at autoTRADER.ca, and one must emerge victorious.

I drove all of these and if the CX5 came in a hybrid version I would have bought it. I bought the Escape Titanium AWD hybrid and so far (1000miles) its been great. I'm a hiker and love the outdoors and have had the Escape on some rocky and muddy dirt roads with some stream crossings and its been great. Two tanks of gas so far first one 41.5 MPG and second one 42.2 mpg overall. The Escape was also the least expensive out the door price. I'm a happy camper.

I lived a week with the Rav4 and ended up buying the CX-5. Test drove the Ford and it was worlds worse than either the Rav or the Mazda. You said it yourself - it's just plain boring. Had the Rav figured out the cabin noise problem (it shouldn't sound like a truck in the cabin), we might own it now. The CX-5 is just more refined and way, way more fun to drive. Cabin and cargo space have been fine for my family of four.

I bought a rav4 2020 hybrid. Test drove regular rav4, admittedly was sluggish. Everyone has there preference, to me CX5 has the best looks, yet I went for a rav4. Family of 5 ( 3 Teenager) space does matter. Tons of space up front and at the back, with generous trunk. Driving experience is much better in the hybrid than the gasoline version. Personally if I would need more space I would go for Peogeot 5008, great car and an absolute king of space (compared to its exterior size), now that is the difference that you can actually feel. See cabin insulation , ride quality and handling and even interior quality of Escape Titanium aint that bad as you picture it, sure its not as good as Mazda or even the Toyota but its fine and never hurts, and maybe Escape is bigger but visually it felt as compact and even when inside th Escape gave better view outside owing to thinner A pillars and wider glass area Peugeot 5008 felt like an overstyled car to me and I absolutely hate PSA cars transmissions and drives way worse than Escape, the Escape though not as good as the CX-5 still drives good, almost like a tall MK 4 Ford Focus, steering of escape was a let down, I felt even the VW Tiguan had more authentic feeling steering than Escape, but as a package the Escape felt like a jack of all trades, an overall fine package and no way as bad as U portray it.

I’m sorry to say how overall disappointing this video was for me. The comparisons were not standardized between cars. For example, he barely mentioned the host of safety features in the Escape, but then praised the CR-V for “going the extra mile” with safety features that the Escape has. The Escape is “compromised,” but he never really explains how, but carries on how it has to act as both a car and an SUV. Some specific instances of compromise would have been nice. To me, it seemed that some of the possible “compromises” to which he referred were instances of flexibility. At the end of the video he chose the Escape as the winner. No way I could envision that coming, based on his earlier comments. And he wraps up by saying “it’s compromised, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.” So, exactly how is it compromised? When discussing the CX-5, he says that only the RAV-4 has heated rear seats; earlier in the video he said the CR-V offers them. His CX-5 review was the most negative review of that model I’ve ever heard. Definitely shows how he is on a different page than most other reviewers. Finally, the top of the line models were demonstrated. In the USA, these models start in the high twenties. All the models shown here were in the forties (yes, I understand prices were CA dollars.) But, few people buy the very top of the line. Most people can’t afford the top of the line. To me, it would have made more sense to compare mid-level trims that more people will eventually buy.

There's a lot to get through here, but I'll try to keep it short and address your concerns in order. You're correct: I do praise Honda for going the extra mile with safety features in the CR-V; I do the same with Toyota and the RAV4. But what you're missing is that the praise is for the fact both automakers have made their safety suites *standard* in every trim. That is not the case with the Escape, nor with the CX-5. My complaints about the Escape being compromised are covered -- it has to appeal to both car and crossover buyers, but it lacks the car-like ride and handling of the CX-5 and the outright space and utility of the CR-V and RAV4. As for the seats in the CX-5, if you watch again you'll note that I say the CX-5 and RAV4 are the only two to offer heated *and* ventilated front seats, *and* heated rear seats. The CR-V has heated front and rear seats, but no ventilation. I'm not even sure how to address your issue with my take on the CX-5 being "the most negative" you've ever heard. It's interesting, because I even pointed out that auto journalists rave about the CX-5 because it drives nicely and most auto journalists like to drive... I like the CX-5 a lot and speak quite highly of it, but as a small SUV it's not great at its jobs (spacious; flexible) and, if it were my money, I'd stick with a Mazda6 sedan. As for your last point, as I'm sure you've noticed in other reviews (written or video), most professional ones are of the top-of-the-line trims out there because that's what automakers provide to the media for review purposes. That's especially true in Canada, where fleets are smaller and far more concentrated than they are in the U.S. I don't get to pick and choose which trims I'm driving.

Well it has a good mix of everything, that is a HUGE plus, See if one is buying a car on a budget one can get the Escape with 1.5l turbo engine which when loaded comes to only 34k for which one gets almost same power and torque as a CRV/Rav4 and same or better gas mileage than both others and actually the Escape drives pretty well, its not CX-5 good but definitely a second Then comes the fact that the Escape is easy..have U been in 1 then U ll clearly appreciate the glass area and visibility, its almost like Honda has lost its philosophy of Man Maximum machine minimum, the Escapes A pillars are not as fat as others, the low hood and wide glass, somehow it felt like driving a small hatch back while being able to accommodate 4 6 footers in comfort Have U tried the Rav4/CRV with 4 people on board? If so try it next time, those cars feel seviourly underpowered forthe job, the Escape specially with 2.0 turbo felt like is that even a challenge?? So even though most dont find it appealing in the way it looks which frankly I too didnt like , it makes a lot of sense to a lot of buyers, but sadly the Ford brand image is shit compared to Toyota and Honda, so many just avoid it without even trying it.

I don't know enough about the Ford Escape to comment; my daughter (a different one) drives the previous generation Escape Titanium and likes it a lot. This January 2020 I took Escape 2.0 AWD as loaner for the hill trip and I was totally surprised by how good it was even with 4, the car had lot of power, the space was not as good as CrV but it wasnt bad either, the Escapes stiff suspension which a lot of people complain was a boon because when loaded with 4 it didnt float like a boat like how Rav4 does!

I have a Ford Escape that I bought in college (in 2003). It is 17 years old. Apart from oil changes and new tires, it has been in the shop just ONE time (late last year to replace a faulty wheel gear assembly that was making noise when I turned the wheel at low speeds). That was a relatively minor repair...where I dropped it off in the morning to be diagnosed and was repaired before noon. So, my vehicle (which has over 200,000 miles on it) has been the epitome of the word "reliable." In fact, I am currently thinking about a new small SUV. I was leaning toward the RAV4 (because I like Toyota, its reputation for reliability, the RAV4 in general...and I just like how it looks). However, I keep thinking about how reliable my Escape and Explorer vehicles have been (my parents gave me my Explorer ten years ago and now has over 350,000 original miles -- and I have never had to take it in for a repair). I still like the RAV4...but I keep coming back to the Escape because of reliability. I think that I now prefer the 2020 Escape.

We're more than likely going with the Mazda but as someone who hates these things, I'm a car guy, I was surprised with the crv considering I've called them APPLIANCES over the years. The rav is a bit too truck like for us but I do like it. The cx5 dealership here is awesome which pushed us over the edge, and we currently own Honda's. But that Ford is dead last. Any of the other 3 are good picks. You are nuts. The oil dilution problem is supposed to be fixed as of 2019 models but I was still weary of that. Since you are reviewing the mainstream SUVs, everyone of them will use regular gas. Are there any non-luxury SUVs that run on premium fuel??? 😕

I believe that he said that the Escape 2.0 required Premium. The CX-5's computer can adapt to regular with a slight drop in tourque (i.e. you get a choice every time you want to fill up)

None of them need to run on premium, premium is just recommended If you want all of the horsepower and torque. I have the escape with the 2.0 4 banger and I’ve never put premium fuel inside and it’s been running great never had an issue and I’ve owned it for 6 years

The RAV4 stands alone in my opinion especially if you consider the limited as I see a lot of people talking about the signature for the CX5. The CX5 is beautiful but it’s just too low to the ground and too cramped inside
@patrickmcmullen7910
@patrickmcmullen7910 4 жыл бұрын
In my case, my wife and I are ready to retire. So we greatly appreciate the Mazda being lower to the ground as we don't need the optional running boards to get in or out. The CX5 has as much leg room in the front as the Rav4 and nearly 2" more in the back row! Plus the Mazda turbo engine has much more low end torque for towing a small trailer. After being in both, we loved the interior materials more in the Mazda and it felt much quieter to us as well. So the Mazda wins in our case. Everyone has different needs so no one vehicle is the best in this class.

Patrick McMullen Agreed if you’re looking for more of a car then an SUV . The Subaru forester sounded like a better option for you? But if you are truly looking for an SUV height Room ( even in compact) All drive system -RAV4 has torque vectoring

@@damiienevo4053 the Subaru cannot tow as much as the Mazda and we have been told to stay away from CVT transmissions. Don't get me wrong, I currently drive a Toyota Camry (2003) with 232,000 miles on it and it is showing no signs of giving up. I like the fact that the Rav4 uses an engine with dual fuel injection to prevent carbon build up on intake valves but the Mazda was quieter and has more back seat room for passengers. We have not purchased yet but our list of potential vehicles is getting shorter!
@damiienevo4053
@damiienevo4053 4 жыл бұрын
Patrick McMullen I don’t see how you think the Mazda has more back room space and either the Subaru or the rev? It’s the smallest But you are right regarding the towing to Subaru does 1500 in the Mazda does 2000 Some of the RAV4’s tow t2000-3500 If that is a big deciding factor the adventure/trd is the grade to tows the most for the RAV

@patrickmcmullen7910 4 жыл бұрын
@@damiienevo4053 I compared the back seat leg room from each manufacturers brochures. And then I only compared the Rav4 Adventure (37.8) to the CX5 (39.6) as I have ruled out the Forester. For towing having low end torque is always best and the Mazda wins with 320 ft lbs at 2500 rpm vs Toyotas 184 ft lbs at 5000 rpm.

honda crv - nope due to oil dilution and cvt. cx5-great ride but poor cabin space and resale value. forester - plagued with engine problems and cvt. escape - ford meh ! rav4 - great if you get xle premium and up with 19 inch wheels, no hybrid if planning to keep the car for long time. rav4 is the only best pick for this year.

What wrong with CVT, answer nothing. Other types of transmission fail too! They start to slip, they have gear searching problems, and they are not smooth Shifting. By the way oil dilution been solved since 2019. If you want a really a great driving experience get a electric car, the torque is unbeatable.

The RAV4 also has engine issues, just like Honda. Engine cracking, coolant leaks & a possible fire hazard. www.consumerreports.org/car-recalls-defects/toyota-lexus-recall-replace-engine-avalon-camry-rav4-es/ Ford escape and Mazda CX5 are the only cars without such serious recalls in this comparison. You guys are crazy. You guys didnt even put into account reliability ot styling, and the Ford is probably the least reliable car out of the 4, or at least 2nd to last because of the CR-V, and the ugliest as well. Best vehicle in my opinion is the CX-5. You guys seriously gave the edge to the Ford because it had like 2 more inches of space than the CX-5? Come on now. Honestly, the CX-5 is a great car for any family, and usually if families carry around a lot of stuff, they'll go for a larger SUV than these 4. I test drove it and the Ford's riding experience was very mediocre. It's so boring and ugly, like the RAV4. Its fast, but if it cant handle it well, then theres no point in it being fast. I hate when nobody shows Mazda love either. It's like they love all aspects of it and everything about it is better than all the other cars, but people hate it just because of space. The RAV4 was a pretty good one too, but the ride is bad. Theres a reason why this thing has been out for like 4 months now and I still haven't seen a single one yet. I dont see how it is better than the other 3. People make space and size a huge deal, when in reality it's just not unless if you're carrying huge items like every single day, then you wouldn't even go for these SUVs. The Escape doesnt even have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. This is ridiculous.

Mazda POS. When new they seem great but Previous 2012-2018 models had tons of SERIOUS problems at average milage, i'm talking 30 to 100k. I'm one of the unlucky ones with a blown engine (head gasket turbo failure,2nd turbo @100k ) They suffer major engine failure, gearbox problems, braking system, etc MAZDA Will tell you its tough luck once your warranty run's out YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I bought a used 2012 from a Mazda dealer it had the turbo replaced, i've changed oil and filters @15k not 20k as they recommended i constantly monitored the oil. Recently whilst doing so I noticed the coolant had gone way over the max mark. I pulled some out and it smelt like exhaust gases. Back to main dealer requires new engine head gasket and new turbo, GAME OVER. Mazda have said " shit happens ". These cars are failing all over the world and Mazda don't give a shit. google cx5 engine problems.

I am on the market for an SUV. We own a CX-9 which I like how it drives a lot, the CX-5 feels just like it and better, but I do have the sense of low reliability. If you want it for lease or just 5 years, then that is not an issue. I wish the RAV4 would not be so noisy. I have a Carmy and that is so nice.
