Great review and I’m looking forward to test riding one soon. I’ve got a ‘19 Blur TR now and am hoping a plusher bike will give me a little more confidence and ability in the rougher stuff. What do you think? Those trails look fun, btw, but I gotta say they’re practically paved compared to the (almost) endless rocks I typically ride here in the northeast!

Yeah it's a blend of rocky tech and it had smooth areas, I had tech difficulties and couldn't show you most of cotton tail that would been more your terrain. Thanks for watching.

There are a lot of good bikes in this catagory from other brands also, it would be prudent to look at those also.

@@TheAllEngineering Thanks. When I wrote that comment over a year ago it was just before I demoed a Hightower. I was looking for something that seemed to soak up the bumps better than the Blur, and during the demo, I was surprised to find that the Hightower felt similar to the Blur, but heavier and less nimble. I stuck with the Blur. A year later I’ve found my skills have grown and I started wondering again if the Blur, while extremely fun and nimble, wasn’t holding me back a little (am I having to work too hard?) and even creating some safety issues. I’ve ridden a couple of friends bikes in the meantime (another Hightower and Yeti 115) which has given me some more perspective. A week or so ago I swapped bikes with a friend and tried his Yeti 115. What I immediately noticed this time was that the front tire/wheel got hung up less at slow speeds. With the Blur I have to ride aggressively (faster and out of the saddle) even when just cruising with buddies. Otherwise, my front wheel will sometimes jam on an obstacle either completely stopping me or throwing me off-line. This is my major complaint about the Blur and I’ve always wondered if a slacker angle and more travel would help this. After quite a bit of research over the past couple of days, I just ordered the Tallboy v4. I also considered Yeti, Pivot and the Ibis Ripley. If I had only one bike, the Ripley would probably be my choice, but as I already have the Blur, I opted for something further into the trail category. Hopefully the Tallboy will give me some of the fun, speed and maneuverability of the Blur, but with more compliance at lower speeds and a lower likelihood of going over the bars. I’m sure it’s downhill capabilities will be far improved as well. If anyone can share their experiences that might be related to my questions about how head tube angle and travel affect getting the front wheel hung up and other ride characteristics I’d appreciate the feedback.

@@FluxCondenser I would recommend if you get the chance to ride a modern really slack hardtail. The capability will surprise you. I ride one that has 160mm fork and 64 deg head angle, this is the bike I ride most often. You get a really slack long travel bike that pedals well up hills, and it is a blast on the downhill. It's like riding a big bmx bike and is really nimble. When we swap bikes my friends are surprised how good it is, and when I get back on after riding theirs the responsiveness is noticeable. It can also handle jump park duties well as an added bonus.

@@TheAllEngineering thanks for the advice. I ended up ordering a tallboy to give me something a little slacker and beefier. It should be a good addition to the Blur when riding more difficult trails. Today I rode my Blur, but tried setting it up using the recommended pressure and rebound settings from the SC website. This was a revelation and the bike seemed more capable and fun to ride than ever, negating many of the complaints I had about the bike. I’ve always understood what the rebound setting does conceptually, but confused the effect the setting has on ride quality in practical terms. Somehow I got it in my head that “slower” equals “softer” when in reality it can be quite the opposite. When I was new the sport, I had continually adjusted the rebound to be slower thinking that would smooth things out. I also ended up putting less and less air in the shocks thinking that would help. Using the recommended settings, today I ended up with a lot more pressure in the shocks and much faster rebound. Right away I realized how much better the bike was set up this way. I had more confidence and rode much better and everything felt “just right.” It was great to finally figure this out, but I regret having ridden so long with the bike set up so poorly.

Just a touch over 5'10 so just like yourself, same height. If I was you and in the position to own this bad boy, I'd go with the large! It will give you more confidence in downhill chunder and trust me, the large fits perfect. I think the medium might be a little cramped cockpit. Lucky dog to own this rad bike, I'm totally stoked for you!

Not a bad idea in theory, I've never seen a youtuber do that but if the bike was was not level then you get 62 on the HTA. This means the bike must have been on little incline. Seems like it was close because on paper it has a 65 degree HTA. A few degrees would have also taken the STA forward as well. Pretty decent video, I would try that on level ground though.

How does this compare to the Ripmo?
@travelthenarrowtrail8660
@travelthenarrowtrail8660 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the VPP suspension is very much more of a plush bike over rocky rooty descents and it is a bit longer top tube, but if your question is compared to Ripmo version 2... Well Rimpo version 2 has the same geometry pretty much. I only have experience on the Ripmo v.1 and it rides much harsher, very linear over rocky terrain. But when it comes to climbing, it does climb noticeable better than the hightower. Hightower climbs really well but Ripmo has the edge on climbing. When it comes to a fun party bmx bike, that is where the Ripmo shines, very light and spritely rig. The Hightower is heavier and not so much nimble on its feet but very planted and stable. It is very confidence inspiring and will help erase mistakes you make on the trail. Thanks for watching.

Did not have a chance to weigh it but I would guess around 30 or 31 lbs, not too bad. You can't feel it on the trail though, it is so fast.

Please don’t ever say a reverb is good again. I’m a mechanic in Denver. We see a ton of these, and every last one has problems - the leak, they constantly need to be bled, they get stuck, the lever likes to die. Hydraulic droppers are vastly inferior. Fox Transfer/RaceFace Turbine R or BikeYoke Divine ftw. When my hightower arrives, the reverb won’t be installed. I’ll run a Kashima post instead.
@travelthenarrowtrail8660
@travelthenarrowtrail8660 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse, totally agree with you. At this time when I did the ride, I thought RS must have fixed this dropper. I'm convinced the dropper was brand new, which is why it worked so well. One other thing about it is this: try riding it when its below 30 degrees. I used to ride in Michigan when I lived there and the fluid would freeze up, which means the dropper would freeze up. Are you the guy who works at Mojo cycles? I think I remember you telling me you were waiting on your Hightower, but may have been a different guy as well. Thanks for watching. Ride on...
