**UPDATE**: I MULLETED this bike! • Santa Cruz Hightower V...
Ah yes, the quest for the perfect bike.
This seems to be the biggest obsession pursued by many mountain bikers.
A topic filled with heated debates and passionate opinions. The quiver killer, the hover bike, the magical suspension design that allows you to pedal and climb with levitational ease, while magically floating down gnarly descents.
This long term review has it all. Climbing performance, downhill shreds, wannabe ninja's.....
Watch, comment, subscribe, GO SHRED!

For sure! It's the same with the HTv2 in LO mode, but that's really common with all of these long, low and slack geo's. Increasing the fork to 160mm on the HTv2 really helped with that and made the bike feel more balanced for my style. You still have to be mindful of it though.

You should also look at a modern slack long travel hardtail they are extremely capable and under rated. I ride one and when I swap with my mates hightower I notice the drop in efficiency and also it does not build speed any where near as well when on flow trails that lend themselves to pumping. I definitely prefer my hardtail. Go and ride one on some trails you will be surprised.

I’ve ridden the switchblade and liked it. I felt like it was pretty on par with the high tower with the stock Santa Cruz lower link. 2.44 Thats my baby :) 2015 Hightower, looking to upgrade eventually to either a Canyon Spectral, new Hightower, or a Yeti sb150, but my current Hightower seems to be unkillable lol and I ride it well because it's all I've ever known to be honest. Got it second hand just over a year ago for 3 grand USD and its the CC version with some good upgrades, it has envy carbon wheels with the best DTswiss hubs they did at the time (cant recall what they are called), Magura 7 brakes, a fox float x2 (2018 one), still has the original rockshox pike fork but the travel has been increased to 150mm from 140mm, Sram xo1 drive train, Sram carbon crank. more than enough fancy stuff for my level of riding parts wise. A criticism is the geometry feels a bit "tame" is how id put it, again I've not ridden any other bikes for more than 1 trail and obviously said bikes weren't set up for me, but I get a lot of comments of people saying the bike looks too small for me reach wise (its an XL and I'm 6'3), that being said you'd expect it to feel a bit nimble for a 29r, with a bit steeper head angle than new trail bikes and the frame being a bit small for me by the modern standard, but it really doesn't feel like that at all to me. Feels hard to jump anything on it, hard to throw it round corners. I live in Laguna Beach and can ride all the trails here on this bike which says alot as there is some really gnarly trails here, but it definitely doesn't enjoy it lol, it can handle really chunky terrain but it can get very sketchy sometimes. On a plus note it climbs easy and its a very fast bike, when the terrain isn't too challenging like simple single track stuff with some little chunk but mainly flow, the bike just seems to roll fast, when its easier going sections I'm way faster than all my peers, I just get left behind when they are mowing through gnarly rock gardens like nothing and hitting doubles comfortably. This new Hightower really does look like all the things I didn't like have been addressed! looks way more capable and definitely more justified in being called an all rounder than my current hightower. definitely lead contender for when i eventually get a new bike!

Very good video on this one. I used to have the CC version in the same color. I did a comparison to the Ripmo v2 earlier this year. I recently learned SC changed the shock that now the new HT comes with 145mm of travel. Does the Cas. link take it up to 150mm now? You didn't mention Dupont in NC. You have to ride there if you haven't yet, its fantastic and that bike will slay it there. I have a feeling the HT or the Mega will be next in their update list to release.
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I use to live in Asheville and rode Dupont on occasion. We did an episode on here covering some of my old favorites there! The shock is still the same. They added a 2.5mm reducer on the first year SuperDeluxe's to take it from a 55mm stroke to a 52.5mm stroke. A lot of people went in and removed the 2.5mm spacer and it never presented any clearance issues. Santa Cruz opted to not put the spacer in for 2020. The reducer is just a small piece of Delrin, so it's easy to do away with for anyone interested. I never removed mine though, I walk the edge of butt buzz from the rear tire enough already! :) I recently inquired about the HT for 2021, and was told it was not up for a revision this year. My hope was that they would fix the tunnel clearance, but no luck yet.

@@SemiSendy Totally agree on the tunnel clearance. For its intent, why make it so small to only fit an air shock.
@rhubarbbs
@rhubarbbs 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding the shock rub. Coils rubbing in the tunnel isn’t so much an “issue to address” like a bug or a design flaw that you’re pointing out, as much as it is your wish that they didn’t design the bike that way. It’s was a conscious decision to make an air only bike. All coils are non-compatible on purpose.

Great review man. Really high quality. We are very similar riding style wise, though I'm here in socal. I have the same bike, same color, and have owned it since around August 2019. Not quite as many miles logged by a few thousand to be certain, so I feel qualified to comment. I completely agree with your points. I also have the cascade link, and upped the front fork (lyrik) to 160. I will say it rode great with the cc link and 150 fork up front, but too many pedal strikes. Upping the fork rebalanced it and it's a ripper. My one regret is not putting a wrap on the downtube, the paint is very soft and is more pitted there after a year than any other bike I've owned. Also, my other complaint is after having the cascade link, I seem to need to tighten linkage bolts every few rides or so even with blue lock tite.
@BradBuege
@BradBuege 3 жыл бұрын
Also, thanks for your notes on the coil shock. It's a bummer for sure it rubbed, though cascade claims you can run a fox coil no problem with an sls. I have my doubts. I think the cc would be best bet for that, it's possible the layup is slightly different and thinner there. Notes for others interested in cc link or suspension on this bike: I ultimately decide to keep the stock rock shox super deluxe select plus and not pursue coil for expense reasons, doubts it would fit, and ultimately the fact the air shock feels awesome. I did remove one volume spacer with the cc link. I also tried cushcore in the rear and though it did help with suspension a little, the pain of install and weight penalty which you could absolutely feel while riding let me to hate it and get rid of it so I recommend against it.
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy 3 жыл бұрын
160mm definitely makes a better match up front. I preferred it with the stock link in the LO position as well. Interesting about the linkage bolts. I just pulled mine for the first time to check bearings, and never had them loosen since initial install. I wonder if that's been common with other people as well.
@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy 3 жыл бұрын
I tried the SLS 500# spring on a DHX2 on the CC link and it rubs as well, sadly. I agree with you, the increase in performance from the CC link alone makes the SuperDeluxe feel so much better, and it's by far the primary upgrade I would recommend over replacing the shock. Also agree with Cush Core. I have a rear wheel I run for shuttling and park with a i9 grade 300 rim and cush core, and I would never want to pedal up long climbs. The cush core is such a pain to deal with outside of the rotational weight as well. Cheers!

Why do you prefer the Bronson?
@dadventuretv2538
@dadventuretv2538 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarveyJohnWillmott as Semi-Sendy said- more playful and nimble. My background is bmx in the 80s, and while I may not play and jib like I used to, I still prefer a more playful bike. And with 2.6s I don’t notice much rollover difference in all but the slowest, gnarliest trails, and with a frame size up (XL) it is super stable at high speed.
@HarveyJohnWillmott

@@dadventuretv2538 What advantage does the Hightower have over the Bronson then?
@dadventuretv2538
@dadventuretv2538 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarveyJohnWillmott well I think your question is kind of the answer. But of course that is against a Bronson the way I spec’d it. It you have a Bronson at your suggested size, or maybe even sized down to make it even more flickable like some people do, and/or have smaller width tires, then you will notice more of the difference of the HT being able to monster truck more due to the better rollover of the 29ers. Another great question is, what is the difference now between the Bronson V4 (MX wheels) and the HT? I gotta demo a new Bronson MX and maybe answer that question. Bottom line- Some people just love 29ers- rolling big wheels, lettin em take up a lot of the work, pedal efficiency once up to speed and ability to naturally maintain speed once up to speed without much effort. If that’s your bag, then that is really why you should go HT. For me tho, I prefer a bit more playful of a bike and to be more active on the bike, I prefer faster acceleration of the smaller wheels even if it means I have to work a bit more to keep my speed up once I have it, since that is naturally how I ride and am going to do that anyway. Obviously you can do all this stuff on a 29er also, I just find it much easier on a 27.5 for an average Joe. Hope this helps. If you’re thinking of buying and trying to decide demo both if at all possible. I also have a bunch of vids (older now) talking about the Bronson.

It truly is impressive just how rowdy it can get and stay pretty composed. It's definitely on the long travel end for a trail bike. If you need a single bike quiver for regular trail riding, enduro's and park... this would be my pick.

Hi Ride DMC, the ones I’ve ridden since I was in the market for this bike include: Process 134 & 153, SB130 & 150, Optic & Sight, Spur, Sentinel & Smuggler, 5010, Bronson, Blur, Tallboy & Mega, Ripley & Ripmo, Stumpy & Enduro, Ranger. Fuel EX. Spent enough time to at least adjust to proper sag on all but the Fuel, which was a bike swap on trail with someone close to my size. Rest were demo’s.

Hi Rich, nice "long term review" but just wanted to ask about the Cascade update. Now you have front and back a 150mm supsension or did you also an upgrade at the front? Is the cascade a must have update on the HT V2 or just nice to have? Did not a lot of rides with the bike now, but in spring the bike will be used lot more and the question is, try first without Cascade upgrade or from the beginning? Would be nice to have a comment, cheers Jose

Hi Jose, happy to help. I've been running the fork at 160, which I changed over long before the Cascade Link was released. I like having the bike more aggressive for rowdier terrain, and 160 out front felt incredibly well balanced even with the stock link. Everyone has different preferences and local terrain, so you may want to try the bike out in the "HI" and "LO" positions on the stock link first. If you decide the "LO" setting is what you prefer, then I would definitely consider the CC link.

Megatower is 160 in the back… I wanted something that would climb a bit better, the HT has slightly better geometry for that. I built the bike up so the fork didn’t cost extra and the link makes the suspension more progressive, but not sure how it would compare to the MT.

Hey Ricky, the frame integrity seems to still be fine, but honestly it's something that always weighs on me in the back of my mind. Only when I'm off the bike though, too much fun being had while I'm riding to worry about it, haha! If the Enduro is on your list, I would say consider the Megatower, which has the coil clearance and same ability to run a Cascade Link. That said, my buddy recently picked up the new CC link for his Enduro, and it's really unlocked that bikes potential as well.

Good question. I really like the 36, it's been an awesome fork. That said, A buddy installed a Push HC97 on his Lyrik not long after I swapped to the 36, and I was really impressed with the huge improvement it made to the Lyrik. Since the cost of that Push damper and Cascade link are less than a 36 combined, I'd go that route if forced to choose. I really couldn't imagine getting rid of the Cascade Link.

@@SemiSendy thank you so much! I’m pretty sold on the cascade link after servicing my stock link bearings as it seems like an easy swap. Maybe I’ll do that first. I put a 2.5 gnardog in the SD ultimate and that added some much needed progression, but I’m interested to see how the link feels. I’ll also look at the push dampener. The lyrik ultimate isn’t bad, it just seems to get a bit overwhelmed and gets stuck deep in the travel in the chunky stuff. Take care 🤙🏼

@SemiSendy
@SemiSendy 3 жыл бұрын
Hey A.W.M, good questions for sure, and it really depends on your personal riding style and terrain, honestly. If you're more in the camp of "long, low and slack" design preferences, I'd say 160mm and CC link 100%. If you prefer a bit more slow speed responsiveness for tight twisty single track, then you may wan to consider 150mm and stock link in the "HI" position. If you aren't sure, you could try the 150mm/HI set up first, if you end up preferring the LO position, you can swap the air spring to 160mm (assuming it's an option on said fork you pick) and pick up the CC link. I did find the LO position with a 150mm fork was really prone to pedal strikes. The CC link does drop the BB 2.5mm more. The 160mm fork set up helps to bring that back in balance, as well as the overall feel in general with the CC link.

@SemiSendy 3 жыл бұрын
I actually almost purchased a Ripmo V1 before getting on the Hightower V2. I can compare those two, but I've not ridden the Ripmo V2. While I loved the Ripmo, there was a distinct difference in the front end feel of the two. The Hightower is so stiff and solid, that it was perceivably more solid and tracked better in the rough chunk and big hits. The Ripmo MAYBE had a slight edge in pedaling efficiency, but it was a negligible difference. Both climb incredible well. Again, this was a V1 Ripmo, and I'm not sure how much the frame's stiffness might have changed between generations, if it did change. Hard to go wrong either way though, both Ibis and Santa Cruz are incredible companies.
