Urban motorcyclists looking for a fast and efficient motorcycle that’s well suited to quick trips around town should take a ride on Zero Motorcycles’ all-electric SR/F ($21,495, as tested). The SR/F combines big-bike-type styling and performance with usable range and charging for those looking to rid themselves of the gasoline pump.
--
The SR/F is the northern California-based company’s top-of-the-line electric motorcycle. It’s styled as a naked bike that compares loosely to liter-sized gasoline-powered streetfighters. Powered by a huge, and aesthetically pleasing 14.4kW battery and compact ZF75-10 motor, Zero claims its powertrain is capable of producing a whopping 140 pound-feet torque. That’s more than either Honda’s six-cylinder Gold Wing or BMW’s mighty K 1600 GTL. And it does it nearly without silence.
Sure, the lack of engine and exhaust sound feels strange at first, as compared to a traditional internal combustion engine, open-minded riders will acclimate to the whine of the drivetrain and bite of the brakes when squeezed.
Simplicity is the name of the game with the SR/F. There are no gears to shift, no clutch lever to squeeze, instead the Zero offers a scooter-like gas-and-go riding experience. Multiple power mode settings makes it easy to get up to speed on the Zero, and the throttle response is nearly perfectly calibrated. Bosch-sourced traction control and ABS come standard, both of which can be manually disabled, if desired.
Range is dependent on the selected power mode and how much throttle the rider applies, and of course the terrain (riding uphill sucks more juice than coasting down an incline). During our 13-mile stoplight-to-stoplight city commute, in Sport mode, the SR/F consumed 17 percent capacity. This meant we had plenty of juice to run a few errands before returning home at the end of the day.
As opposed to the standard 3kW charger, the premium model we rode is equipped with a 6kW charger, allowing the SR/F to charge from a depleted battery state to 95 percent charge in four hours when plugged into a Level 2 charging station. It takes eight hours of charging time when a traditional three-pronged 110-volt household power source is used. A colorful TFT-style instrument display keeps tabs on the motorcycle’s vitals including battery life and range with a multifunctional handlebar-mounted switch allowing for adjustment.
The SR/F rolls on a set of 17-inch cast alloy wheels shod in Pirelli’s grippy Diablo Rosso III tires. For the first-time ever, Zero employs real motorcycle suspension components highlighted by Showa’s BP-style (big-piston) fork and a gas-charged direct-mount shock absorber. Although a bit heavy-feeling this ebike glides over rough pavement and delivers pleasing ride quality. Heavy-duty triple Spanish-sourced J.Juan disc brakes keep speed in check and provide ample stopping power for the nearly 500-pound Zero.
Those seeking a fun and functional urban motorcycle with most of the good (thrilling acceleration, great build quality, and ease of use) and nearly none of the bad (i.e., gasoline fill-ups, oil changes, and other forms of routine maintenance aside from wear-and-tear items) will love the SR/F. For quick sprints around town Zero’s latest motorcycle will make you think twice about the future of all-electric bikes.

Have one. Love it! -Looks better in the dark red color. -Turn TC off through the app in the custom riding mode section but that is a *Bad Idea*. Electric motors spin up so quickly when traction is lost that it is very easy to drop the bike. Less powerful Zeros w/o TC have spit off many an experienced rider this way. -Pulls hard from a standstill but pulls harder from 40mph. Acceleration begins to tail off at about 85mph. It will go well over 120 but once past 110 it accelerates slowly. - Best feature is being able to pull away from anybody at any light without making enough noise to attract unwanted attention. - While you can feel the weight it is less topheavy and handles better than my speed Triple R.

@Lucas de Abreu I know, crazy right? I find that it tips in more easily and holds a line better. On high speed uneven surfaces the Ohlins on the Triumph are still superior but the Zero is pretty darned good.

Can you get a level 2 charger at home?
@Miata822
@Miata822 4 жыл бұрын
@@noone1704 Yes, of course. Search for "EVSE" to find them for sale. They require a dedicated circuit equivalent to a large home appliance (dryer or air conditioner). The bike (in the US, don't know about other markets) is supplied with a Level 1 charger that can plug into 115V or 230V power in your home but an EVSE charger of at least 6kW will charge more quickly. Keep in mind the bike can't charge more quickly than its built in charging hardware, 3kW Standard, 6kW Premium, or 12kW for Premium with the optional "charge tank." 12+kW ESVEs are uncommon and expensive. Ask an electrician about your home supply hardware before ordering one. I only use the low power 115V charger at home since it easily charges the bike overnight. I set my bike to stop charging at 80% to extend the battery life, only charging to 100% the night before a planned long ride. Storing any EV for long periods with a 100% charge is not recommended.

Yuuuuuuuup, almost ate it on my 2017 S the other week after forgetting to break in my new tires first coming out the shop (stupid mould release compound.) They are easy to ride and I tell ppl that but at the same time my years of experience on an ICE Honda and Ducati is probably what kept me from freaking out and I rode it out. Can't wait to put a deposit down for an SR/F and that sweet, sweet traction control.

Also have an SR/F, can confirm. The acceleration from stop lights is effortless, even when trying keep my efficiency between 85-100 kW/mi (300-400 MPGe), I still pull away from normal traffic with ease. And I might be unique in that I don't feel the weight - it's my lightest motorcycle, especially coming my girth-y 950 bagger at 650lbs, or my dense H-D Dyna Fatbob tipping the scales at 750lbs naked with its 1.7L air-cooled V-twin. But I think we can all agree that the weight it does have, it's managed very well.

The feeling of top heaviness is from the lack of rotating mass at the center of the bike (crank, moving pistons, cam shafts). This may also lead to the feeling of "flopping into a turn" as you don't need to overcome the gyroscopic effect the rotating mass. Also, I assume that is a fleet bike from Zero. It wouldn't surprise me if the tires are squared off from highway use. That would also contribute to the "flopping into turns" effect. I was really surprised about the amount of fork dive under braking. Does that bike use progressively wound springs? Finally, 14 miles using 17% of charge extrapolates to 82 miles of range (assuming linear depletion of the battery) in Sport Mode. Giving your generous use of throttle, I'd say that's darn good.

The acceleration is ridiculous, and the regenerative braking set to 100% made me feel like Iron Man (palms forward, you slow down immensely without pushing/pulling anything--much more than engine braking). Gear changing on a normal bike is enjoyable, but I honestly love the experience Zero offers, and I'm going to buy one if my dealer will meet me at a lower price. The range absent an additional battery is quite annoying to me, but averaging around 80-100 miles giving it "all the beans" is enough for me, and you can get much farther in ECO mode.

Engines have cranks, rods, pistons, camshafts, fly wheels, clutches, gears, shafts, etc all adding up to make several small gyroscopic effects on the motorcycle. About 10 years ago someone only changed the position of the engine to change the direction and people said they felt it. I can't seem to find it anymore but if true, it really does explain why electric bikes "flop" into the turn as you say. That's cause the electric bike has essentially removed a ton of small gyros acting on the bike.

@gasdive 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. If agree having had Zeros since 2011. Very flickable.
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 4 жыл бұрын
End result is a Big Mass that is easy to lean over which is counter intuitive. It still has the forward momentum of a heavy bike but like gasdive said it's quite flickable. Still be careful it's a big heavy piece of kit at low speeds.
@peterday3253
@peterday3253 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The reciprocating mass in combustion engines creates gyroscopic forces that affect leaning the bike into corners. Electric bikes have "dead" weight that seems to flop over in the corner as Adam noted, while ICE bikes have "live" weight that can create resistance to inputs at the handlebars.

Looks beautiful. You make it sound very impressive. Funny that your voice was jumping all over the place while you described how the suspension was absorbing the bumps in the road. It will be very interesting when Zero has dealers here in Japan. It has a web domain, but there are no dealers listed. It seems there may one in the pipeline for Tokyo, but that's too far from here. All-year-round riders like me who commute in all weathers might want a scooter or bike with modest fairing. So come on Zero.

@@thorstambaugh1520 That's bullshit. No one rides that much. In real life, it's rare to find motorcycles with more than 80-100k kms. The reality is that you can buy a comparable or better motorcycle (depending on what you need, touring, sports, enduro etc), and you'll still have a ton of money left to spend on maintenance and gas. And have the convenience of not waiting hours to charge, but refueling it in minutes even in the middle of the desert or on a remote mountain pass. Also, in 6 to 8 years the battery range will decline enough to be replaced, and that will cost enough to completely negate the money you saved on gas or maintenace. A 10 to 15 years old ICE bike with low mileage, doesnt need to have it's battery replaced, it's still good to go as new.
@MultiPleaser
@MultiPleaser 4 жыл бұрын
@@thorstambaugh1520 Doing my own maintenance, having cheap insurance, using 89 octane gas, always synthetic oil, and buying new sport tires costs my bike cost 22 cents a mile ($3000 used race bike: trashed engine at 60,000 miles ). I'm better than that now, with a used sport bike that wasn't raced for $3k that doesn't need a new engine at 60k miles, and gets over 60 mpg (with more HP). So, 17 cents a mile if it lasts 120k miles. If a Zero can last me 120,000 miles before it needs a new battery, that would cost $20,000/120,000 = 2/12 = 1/6 = 16.7 cents a mile. I haven't added in electricity, tires, belts or insurance yet. I can make a $300 set of sport tires last 20k miles after wearing them down to the chords, so that's $3/200 miles = 300 c / 200 mi = 1.5 cents/mile. So, tires make the Zero cost 17.2 c/mi. And no wind protection, and can't take it out of town like I do, so...

My modded E bike can hit 46 miles per hour and cost me about a grand. With a 30 or so mile range at normal speeds (15-20 mph). Only thing is that my bike wasn’t designed to go 40 miles per hour and is sketchy as all hell as well as using the brakes that weren’t designed for those speeds. Tbh I’d be willing to pay 5,000$ for this for the better frame, brakes, wheels, battery etc. but their bikes that cost 20,000$ are way too much

True. And when charging away from home you only stay long enough to get the extra range you need. From a low charge the Premium (6kW) version charges at better than 50 miles range per hour. You're going to stop for a bladder break and a soda anyway so it's not like you are standing there waiting for this to charge. Having said that, these aren't intended for cross-country tours, but neither is a Tuono.

You forgot the most important stats: Average Range when fully charged! Granted, it will vary, depending on Rider Modes and Load, but, who cares how fast and hard you can ride it if you don't know how far it will take you? From what I've gathered from this Commute, Eco Mode will average a maximum of 100 miles. So that's effectively 1 mile per each percent of the Battery. That's great for staying local and the extra Urban commutes, not so great for the day out aspects.

84 mile range the way he was riding in sport mode, full throttle, full brake. ( He's hard on bikes.) 17% is about 1/6th, and he went 14 miles. I think the Zero website said range with slow riding was a heck of a lot higher than that. But, just doing the math, a 14 kw-hr battery should last 2 hours on the highway, because crusing uses about 10 hp, or 7 kilowatts. Maybe 120 miles?

140 ft-lbs with 20/90 sprockets gives a rear wheel torque of (140 times 4.5) which is 630 ft-lbs. The motor drops to about 110 ft-lbs by redline, 495 at the rear, which is 124 mph. The BMW S1000 Waheed just tested has about a 10-to-1 overall ratio in first gear, so it makes only 300 ft-lbs off the line, and maybe 900 ft-lbs at 10k rpm (72 mph). Second gear usually cuts that by 33%, maybe 600 ft-lbs towards 124 mph. A 600 cc sport bike has maybe a 15 to 1 ratio in first, and maybe 15 ft-lbs in the bottom, so about 225 ft-lbs at the wheel. They peak in the mid to upper 40's, so peak rear wheel torque is between 675 and 750, and not until 40 or 50 mph. You'll need third gear to get to the Zero's 124 mph top speed, and that cuts rear wheel torque to the low 300's. I think the Zero at nearly 500 ft-lbs would kick 600cc butt at the drag strip.

Regenerative braking is awesome, was getting annual service and the tech said their Tesla SC has not replaced one brake pad since they opened in 2012.
