The Energica Eva Ribelle is the latest premium electric motorcycle from the Italian company Energica, with a claimed maximum range of 400km. I take the electric Streetfighter for a spin to test this out and give you my thoughts on the Energica Ribelle.
Energica are the Italian based company behind the motoE class within the motoGP series.

@@Velikij.Kommentator yes those too but I do not count lightning systems because of their design issues. Damon hasn't made a production model yet. Super soco is not a motorcycle nor is it powerful enough to be used safely on public interstates. Soco lacks power and battery capacity, something Buell/Livewire/Energica/Zero don't have as much of a problem with by comparison.

The rear suspension probably feels better than other electric bikes, because Energica’s have an anti-squat built in; because the engine is not aligned with the swing arm as it is with Zero or the Lifewire. More conventional set up. That’s why they have a chain and not a belt.

Howdy Bruce. I pointed this out in the last video with Energica charging you had, but I wanted to remind you that you can turn up the charge speed. From the factory they ship it out with a 60 amp request (~19kW) but that bike will do up to 75 amps (~23-24kW). While charging, put the key in the ignition and turn it on. Then toggle the MODE button to the right to increase the request, or left to lower it. You can see the request on the bottom right of the screen while charging. Cheers from California!

I know what you mean about the cost. Earlier on this year I bought a Zero S ZF14.4 and I absolutely love it. It was an ex display model, unregistered with the faster charger fitted. New it would have cost just over £14k, but as an ex display and a 2018 model I got it for £9995. I had test ridden one the year before and told myself that if I saw one for under 10 grand I would get it. My bike will do approx 100 miles on a charge. I had to go on a 220 mile one way trip recently and kept to A roads as its better for the range. I stopped after 70 ish miles and used a pod point charger at Tesco as they are free. I just sat in the cafe and had a full english and a pot of tea. Then another 70 miles, another Tesco, another pot of tea. Then a final stop 10 miles from home as it was showing 8 miles of range left! I popped in for bread and milk and just added a bit more charge to get me home. It was an interesting experiment and I learnt lots of valuable lessons doing it. It does require a different mindset but you soon adjust to it.

That's the best looking electric bike iv'e seen yet absolutely stunning but like others have said not a snowballs chance in hell i'd be paying 20k for one never mind 30k. You'd get 3 brilliant almost new bikes for that kind of money. At the end of the day my bike has to be a jack of all trades (commuting, track days, touring, down the shops etc...) and until an electric bike ticks that touring box i'll be sticking to my VStrom. I'm reading that in maybe 5 years time they'll have the battery tech to a level where you could charge from almost 0-100% in 15 minutes so i will be looking at one then IF the price is comparable with ICE bikes. Great review as always mate.

Forget 0-100.. 20-80% is where you’ll be charging most of the time and that doesn’t take that long today. CPO Enérgica’s can be bought between 11-15k with new ones starting at 15k. As far as jack of all trades, I feel those boxes are checked, at least for me. Commute, tour, track, etc.. gonna need a tire change if venturing off road, but naked bikes are your jack of all trade’s these days to begin with. Does one need to outfit it with the top end track spec wheels, shocks, with carbon fiber bits showing here and there? No, honestly, unless you have the extra scratch or are doing some serious track work. Add in the federal/state/utility rebates and my Ribelle with a few nice upgrade options is around 20k. As I keep my bike’s long term, it’s return of investment over time is where it’s less expensive for me over petrol. Electric may not be for everybody and I actually kind of like that as it’s a bit of exclusively that I enjoy, and always have, even when it was petrol bike’s and cars I used to buy. Test ride a Ribelle and tell me you don’t like it. Sure it’s a lot of money, but the good stuff usually is. Easily compares to more expensive bikes, say a Panagale V4S. The Enérgica is quicker actually off the mark and on a roll, so if thought of that way, the Ribelle is a great value for a top performing Italian 🇮🇹 Cheers!

I went electric (car) 3.5 years ago, and would never go back to my main car being an ICE. Finally a bike that can doe a realistic 100 miles whilst having fun, or more going steady. With there being so may DC chargers out there and most of them next to a coffee shop and toilet it's now time for me to get a Ribelle... (not selling my other bikes though, the GS will still be my main bike for tours) but it's so good to ride. As you say Bruce the only negative is the cruise control being fiddly to use. Big smiles....

Thanks, especially for commenting on the handling. I was on the fence with this bike not being able to test ride it. After the SS9 I rode being a bit wonky and turning weird, I was turned off. After I saw you driving through city center somewhere on a Ribelle, and trusting that you knew what you were talking about, I went for it. I figured I could always sell the bike for a decent price because people have to wait for them anyway right now. It turns out you are correct, it handles really well in the corners and is quite manageable for its weight. I still need to tweak the suspension and it's possible the rear shock gets an upgrade, but it's a work in progress. I'm not that heavy and I'm getting bucked up on some roads!

It almost seems to me these e-motorcycles are marked up by 10-20k euro profit margin. These bikes really should only cost 10-12k euros because of the pathetic range. It's a glorified commuter and nobody likes waiting to charge or plan trips around charging. At 10-12k euro price range it would make a revolution but i guess profit is everything for these companies...

Watching you have issues with disconnecting the dcfast, thought id chime in. If you push down the button on the charging handle, hold it down, DONT pull on it, just wait. It sends a signal to break the connection, the charger will power down and unlock from the bike, at which point the trigger will finish depressing and you can pull it out.

I had a brief discussion at work with a motorcycle veteran about electric bikes and he put the point across that electric motorcycles aren't the future but more a stop gap for something else which gave me food for thought. Range is the biggest thing (besides price) that's off-putting when I look at electric motorcycles. That and charge times as the option to charge at home isn't there for me! Great editing, really thorough review! The bike looks great and no doubt that acceleration never gets old! Think your satnav needs recalibrating if its taking you to some pitbike tracks instead of the British country roads! 😂

Superb review. I'm loving my Zero SRS, even more so now I've set up the suspension for my size. I personally don't do more than about 100 miles each time I play and this will quite easily do about 110 non motorway miles but you just have to change your outlook regarding breaks... Speaking of BRAKES... 😉 I hardly ever use mine unless coming to a final stop or flashing the brake lights to warn following traffic. I'm in the fortunate position to be able to afford one of these as a toy but a lot of that extra money will come back to me on fuel/servicing savings.. A full instructing day I can save £20 per day in petrol and worked out today it's about 23p per "litre" and my "petrol station" is mostly at home. ☺

This is by far the most honest review of an electric motorcycle I have so far seen, thank you for taking the time and effort to post it. I've tested a few electric motorcycles now the last being the Harley Davidson Livewire, previous a few Zeros. In my opinion these make fantastic short commute bikes so far until technology releases greater range. For myself personally I would opt for the Zero FXS; light enough and relatively cheap enough for a short commute. For the price of the Zero FXS I could buy a GOOD second hand BMW, Honda or other. Three pounds fifty a charge? and the hassle involved finding reliable charge stations, plus the £5 coffee and donut while you wait! Would it be cheaper or indeed greener!😒

Nice review! From what I can tell EVs are more efficient at slower speeds. The technology is progressing so fast, the prices will get lower and lower with competition/available technology etc. so down the track these types of bikes will be way more cost effective. Thanks for the great video! 👍

Hope you are right about the cost over time as electric cars / vans, while much more eco friendly, are expensive in contrast to their conventional counterparts

Hi Bruce the reason why it does that when you scan your phone at the end of a charge is because if you use Apple Pay Google pay etc they change your card number for security so when you initially scan it’s one temp number and when you do a final scan it does not match!

Energica has just come to the US, but a five-and-a-half hour ride to see one for me, and twenty grand is pretty rich. Still would like one though.

Bubble popped a little on this one. Was really excited about 150mile motorway miles that i read somewhere. Another 5 years and it'll be there. DCT on the VFR is fun, no "stop being an idiot" gear change notification

Nice review, too expensive and not enough range but it's getting there. I have lived with a bike that only does 100 miles per tank , it's ok most of the time but not much fun on longer trips tbh even with 5 minute stops to refuel. My ebike conversion was £300 and gives me lots of fun for local rides but has defo opened up my eyes to the lovely way electric bikes ride.

That's quite a difference from 400km (260 miles) to 100 miles real world! Like you, I still would never consider a 30k bike for faffing around on and commuting, it's just too expensive atm. But if we know one thing from technology it's that it doesn't stay like that and price will come down as performance and weight also improve. One day in the not too distant future electric bikes will overtake ICE bikes in terms of overall practicality and performance and lets face it environmental requirements. More and more electricity is being generated via renewable sources and that's only going to get more plentiful too. Thanks Bruce, a good review of the bike!

Great Video, Great Camera Work and editing. :thumbs up: So to be fair, Zero's 14.4kWh(12.6kWh Nominal) Zero DSR or SR or SR/F or SR/S can be optioned with the additional battery for a 18kWh or 15.8kWh Nominal Capacity. The Energica 21.5kWh is also nominal 18.9kWh, but offers greater stock(standard) L2 and the best part L3 Charging. I'd love to see a Ribelle/RS setup to ride in the dirt and light trails. The Energica smaller battery pack is 13.4 kWh max and 11.7 kWh nominal, Prior to the 21.5kWh model the Zero had range and battery size in the bag with the 18kWh(15.6kWh) combo. But with more power means more battery drain, so the S or SR model with 18kWh has best range, the SR/F or SR/S has slightly less due to the larger, powerful motor. Energica has the most powerful motor and some drag with chain/reduction gear/weight. I'd like to see the 18kWh battery equipped S or SR or SR/F or SR/S model hypermiling test compared. The cheaper Zero is a solid commuter, but hard to compare to actual motorcycles with the recharge times, Energica wins in all other aspects and take the cake. My older Zero DSR 13kWh or 10.6kWh Nominal managed 48miles with 45% battery remaining all running on the motorway with speeds from 60-70MPH, I like how the Energica can manage higher speeds and still get the range it needs compared to other brands.

Lovely looking bike, probably the best of the electrics in my opinion ( This or the Harley) What is annoying is the whole claimed range thing that these companies keep doing. . I’d rather they be transparent about it rather than unrealistic. Imagine if you bought one going off the info to find it didn’t manage your commute. Good bud again tho Bruce.

nice positive review Bruce, thank you. As you say it's coming, but I"ll hang on to my cash having bought a gs 1250 only a year ago and I would be looking at a bike I can realistically tour on two up with luggage, so they're not there yet, but I feel the tech is limited by the batteries, when they improve the rest will follow, not sure if that whine would get on my nerves though and the missus heated clothing flatten the battery in 5 mins !!!!.....cheers !

Great review Bruce. Would it be possible for you do another review and push the bikes range? I have an electric Nissan Leaf. Full regen and eco mode returns close to manufacturers claimed range. I barely touch the brakes and you adapt to the power reduction. I wouldn’t suggest anyone would do this for a scratch but on an early morning winter commute it’s really practical.

According to Energica, they got the claimed 400km range riding in town at sub 30mph speeds. Afraid I would never ride a bike purely in that environment so won’t be in a position to test that. Also the bike has gone back now, I’m hoping to get one of the new RS models when EEMC get one to demo, plus I’ve a wee adventure or two in mind to really push one in the future 😉

Hi, thanks for a great video. One thing I think you should be charging on long trips up to 80%. I think that would cut the charging time by a half as last 20% usually last around the same amount of time like 10-80%. Have a great day.
