Been in love with Lovecraftian setting for years, but getting into the game with all those little packs was a hard no. But with war going on and now with blackouts in my country after the russian terror missile strikes on our energy grid I finally pulled the trigger on the revised set and if my family/friends likes it, I will buy dunwich next in this new simple format. Playing it with candle lights/headlights kinda adds flavour to the setting :) I hope it will help ease long winter nights. And your channel really helped me in this decision. Thank you!

This was super useful! Thank you. I literally discovered this game about 5 days ago, as I was looking for a card game I can play solo when on holiday - I did go for the revised core set, just to give myself the option of playing with friends later down the line, but the expansions were confusing the hell out of me. I, much prefer just getting the entire campaign in a single pack. And it's going to make going back through the older stuff really simple for newcomers. Great video. Thanks! :)

I would say the return to box for The Forgotten Age is almost a must buy for that campaign. It makes the experience so much more palatable in my opinion.
@PlayingBoardGames

I tend to disagree with this sentiment. My opinion on The Forgotten Age is the same with or without the Return To box. I don't think players need to buy a whole cycle and the Return To for an enjoyable time. Not to mention players can adapt the Return To explore mechanic to the base campaign if they truly feel they need it.

Any chance you can do an updated guide specifically looking ahead to everything being available in the new format? So many buyers guides out there spend half the time explaining the old release model, and focus too much on the Campaigns (largely assuming player cards will be bought alongside the Campaign). Specifically it would be nice to have one that answers any of the following questions (or other similar questions about how to approach the 2 box releases) & if you could "future proof" the advice by looking ahead to the point where all Expansions are available in the 2 Box format - How many Investigator expansions do you need before a group would have enough build options to take 2, 3 or 4 players through a single Campaign Expansion? Do you need any or is the Core enough? What's a good ratio of Investigator Expansions to Campaign Expansions? More Campaigns, more Investigators, about the same? Do the Investigator Starter decks effectively replace an Investigator Expansion in terms of cards that can be used with, and give good / interesting build options to, Investigators from the Core Set / other Expansions? Are there any Campaign Expansions that require a specific Investigator Expansion, or a certain number of Investigator Expansions to have a reasonable chance of winning on normal difficulty? If you were looking towards a minimum spend, how many, and which, Investigator Expansions would be best in terms of - Being able to build viable decks for as many of the acquired Investigators as possible? Having a reasonable chance at completing all available Campaign Expansions on normal difficulty? To provide enough character build options for groups of 2, 3 & 4 players to play say 3 Campaign Expansions and still have new builds to try out either in a fourth Campaign or by replaying a Campaign? If you assume all Investigator Expansions will eventually be acquired - what order do you recommend they are bought in? Are there any Investigator Expansions which are very insular (in that they don't add a good number of varied options for characters from outside of the specific group they were packaged with)? If you were looking to build a collection of Investigator Cards where there are at least 2 viable archetypes for each colour of Investigator how many & which Investigator Expansions would you recommend? Investigator Expansions to avoid for new players? Which Investigator Expansions are considered "must have" (even if not bought straight away due to complexity)? If I'm coming from another LCG, or TCG, so am comfortable with deck building (and the Arkham style of deck building combined with a progression system is one of the key things that's attracted me to the game - anticipating more time spent building & tweaking decks than playing Campaigns) - how many Investigator Expansions are needed for a good amount of deck building options to mess around with on "day one"? Are any Investigator Expansions now pretty obsolete / underpowered when considered across the whole product line? Pro's & Cons of a progression style buying pattern - one Investigator Expansion per Campaign Expansion and if, overall, the later Investigator Expansions risk breaking older Campaigns when everything is acquired out of order? Investigator Expansions to avoid if you want to keep the game challenging on normal difficulty (because either too many broken Investigators or too many broken cards in general)?

@williamwilting
@williamwilting Жыл бұрын
The Campaign boxes may fit the cards from the Return To box of that campaign along with the rest, but the con with this I have is that the Campaign boxes should have been a little higher to support the Return To dividers. It seems like you still have to bag the scenario specific sets and the other encounter sets to keep them separate. A divider system makes bagging the cards unnecessary. And it's easier to find what you're looking for, opposed to not bagging and/or dividing cards and instead keeping all cards in one big pile in one place. I think I'd prefer the Return To boxes to still be released, so that I can still make a good use of a higher deck box with dividers for the encounter sets, while the playing cards (built decks) go in the Campaign boxes. Or otherwise, stop the release of the Return To boxes, but provide players with a suitable dividing system for the Campaign boxes, like little tuck boxes for each scenario set and an additional one for the rest of the encounter sets.

Thanks for a nice video. My friends have the non-revised core set, so I’m going to buy a starter (probably Nathaniel, just for the name) and play their copy a few times. If I like it enough, I’ll buy my own revised core. From there I’ll decide for myself if I’d prefer to have more scenarios, more player cards, or a little bit of both. Lots of stuff looks appealing, but I’m not sure what I’ll get the most enjoyment/use from, until I have more experience.

Literally played it for the first time yesterday (just The Gathering) and thoroughly enjoyed the story, the variety of cards, deck building and the prospect of the expansions. Until i saw your video i was totally confused about the different types of product so thank you for explaining it clearly (although for a new player like me i think the Return To campaigns seem unnecessary, do the Campaign expansions use the original cards or the Return to cards?) Thank you for your video. I can now see the thinking behind the investigator and campaign expansions being separate, and as i like the story side of it i will focus my money first on the dulwich campaign expansion and probably after working through that Carcosa will be out. Then when i get bored of the players I'll buy a investigator pack. My wallet thanks you as your video has really helped me avoid buying in confusion both investigator/campaign at the same time.
@colinfreyvogel3014

The full campaign boxes use the original cards, not the “Return to” versions. The “Return to” boxes sit somewhere between remixes, patches, and a convenient storage solution that’s even less relevant with the new campaign boxes. An example of the “patching” would be in Dunwich there’s a scenario called The Miskatonic Museum where you’re hunted by a creature that grows bigger as time goes on. The way the cards work in the original Dunwich is a little clunky and the creature isn’t always threatening because the cards that power it up don’t always work. “Return to Dunwich” addresses this with some replacement cards and instructions, as well as making it more difficult with some new power ups for the monster. The initial printing of Miskatonic Museum is totally fine. It’s a fun scenario and the big bad is totally functional. The Return To Dunwich box just makes it a little better, and that’s 100% unnecessary for your first couple times playing the campaign. The video is totally right to call them luxury products, they’re cool to have but not nearly as cool as any of the campaigns themselves.

Epic multiplayer mode is a different kind of setup for groups of more than 4 players. Scenarios that support this are currently: The Labyrinths of Lunacy The Blob That Ate Everything War Of The Outer Gods (and the upcoming for a regular release) Machinations Through Time Labyrinths is VERY lackluster, if not played in epic multiplayer mode, but Blob and War are excellent in your regular private group, too. At least with 3 players, I have not tried them in solo. Have not played Machinations yet.

One of the first things AH teaches is that it’s ok to lose. It’s part of the game and indeed always getting the best ending to each scenario will result in missing out on good parts of the story and some nice surprises. This also applies to EofE. Though I haven’t tried with EotE, most campaigns are playable (and winnable) with the core player cards and those from the cycle itself. In some campaigns enemy management can be a bit clunky owing to the lack of solid weapons, but EotE will not be one of them. The weapons in the player expansion smash (or mostly bash) pretty well.

I think with the current card pool, Guardians is not that hard anymore. It was released right after TFA, and at that time sure a steep increase of difficulty compared to Rougarou or Carnevale. (Like TFA was compared to Dunwich or Carcosa!) But with an up-to-date player card collection, it does not seem to be really hard anymore. It's now much too easy, if you put it at the end of a campaign (even if you take the traumas from campaign resolution), and feels about right between scenario 4 and 5.

I always hear people say to play the original cycle first before adding the Return To revisions, but is that really a good suggestion? It sounds like they mostly just make the campaigns better, not really make them more difficult.
@PlayingBoardGames
@PlayingBoardGames 2 жыл бұрын
They don't always make them better. The Forgotten Age, for example, alters the explore mechanic and makes the pacing of the scenarios different (I personally prefer the rules without the Return To). The Circle Undone changes a lot of the stats being tested, so it can alter how you approach your deckbuilding. While Dunwich Legacy's Return To certainly makes it better, this is not the case for the others. They just make them different.

I just bought the revised core box, would you recommend buying the Edge of the Earth Investigator Expansion for my first plays? Or should I wait? Note that in my country that's the only one available for purchase.

Very goad they stopped doing thise mythos packs, its suoer scummy and always held me off getting the game. Now i know they're doing new collections to make the buy in much more palatable im looking to see what i can get!

Maybe I missed it. But did you guys give a call what to buy after the revised core box? Starting with edge of the world? Or waiting for the revised Dunwich cycle? Or...?
