my Q5 55TFSIe gets me 35-55Km in range, depending on weather and driving style! This is painful on anything more than city drives, as frankly makes no sense to stop and charge in mid-way on a long motorway drive. The X5 would definitely make more sense and give me more boot space for the longer drives with family. I forgot to add, that most of the time 66% of my driving is electric only. Only during holiday seasons or weekend jaunts out of town will switch this so 66% petrol.

Well.... the 21mile typical range of my XC90 sounds not much, but is surprisingly useful. I drive 17,000m/year so pretty much every day. So the first 365*21= 7,600m each year are on plug-in electric. That’s getting on for half my millage. And that’s at half the cost/mile of petrol. Because I’m either driving around town -or- long-haul, if the plug-in electric mileage were, say, 50 miles then all that would do is mean I go further on the long-hauls before it flips to petrol. BTW, a full charge of my XC90 from a 13amp plug takes 3 hours, not the 5 hours you found.

We are on our second XC90 T8 R Design (2020). The car is a big improvement on our previous 2017 XC90 T8, with a longer range, 20+miles and better fuel economy at 43 mpg (after 6000 miles). Our current car has the Polestar upgrade which makes a surprising difference to power (408ps), handling, and steering feel. This is a very comfortable place to be, as the car has all options (the B+W is well worth the extra money) - the seats are superb (as are all Volvo seats). Our family of 6, with the youngest being 17 love the extra space available, even in the 3rd row. Overall great car - watch out for pre-registered demo's at reduced prices.

I have purchased a BMW 45e and it is just fantastic in the real world - it handles great in all conditions; the electric mode does all the around town running at zero cost; and once on the motorway the petrol engine just flys; if you don't need 7 seats then this is the best all-round SUV to use on a day to day basis

I have the V90 and the system is pretty quick to start up. Like you said it can all be set up via the app before entering the car and it always works. I had the G20 BMW and the new ID7 is so buggy with functionality issues, I hated using it, especially Spotify randomly logging me out, losing connection with car play, trip data randomly not working or displaying. Very easy to use but such a buggy mess.

First time for Volvo- it has firmer suspension than the BMW, and it is presented as a minus to the Volvo! What about the overall design and complexity - once you hit 80k miles your BMW will need a lot more in service and maintenance, did they ever fix the window regulators falling apart? What about the door handles breaking off, so far X5 has not impressed me at all, but a 15 year old XC90, with 7 seats and over 200k miles keeps running strong with little to no maintenance needed, (breaks tires and oil) is this the case with the T8?

Yeah, often overlooked in these reviews. These reviews tend to be tailored towards customers that either lease or change cars as soon as warranty expires. If you wish to buy and keep your car beyond warranty Volvo is a clear winner. It's still not a cheap car to own but the BMW will set you back a fair bit more when you hit a snag out of warranty (as is the case for all german premium brands).

The Merc on paper has a bigger electric range, is perhaps down on performance but is still real world fast, and more economical when the batteries are depleted. We bought an XC90 T8 2016 in December 2019. It's been great, we live in Seattle (moved from the UK then) so having the battery for short trips works for us. The beauty of our car is that we got the dealer to fully upgrade everything to 2020 spec, it now has the latest pilot assist (which is genuinely brilliant on the motorway or in traffic). The infotainment criticism is probably valid compared to a newer alternative, but compared to other cars from the year ours was made, it's way better. But, I don't really get the climate complaints, why do you have the climate turned off when you get in? You just get in and it starts working to reduce the temp... With the app (standard on a new car) you can control the climate before you get to the car too. Our journeys are either very short (battery), or on the highway, so a PHEV works for us.

Not getting why the tester is getting into the Volvo climate sub-menu. The system is always on; fan speed is auto. You only need to select temperature. AC is auto on off. Also, Volvo allows you to fully charge the battery while driving, and you don’t always need to plug in. I believe the BMW requires plug in. Both have regenerative charging.

Once the battery is drain after driving the whole day. The electric motor won't give you that horsepower any more. It makes it feel that you only have limited superpower for maybe 2 hours after that is all down hill. Do correct me if I'm wrong?
@slandshark
@slandshark 2 жыл бұрын
That is incorrect. There's always power coming from the electric motor even at 0% battery (it's not really 0%, just 0% usable for pure EV driving). The gas engine is always supplying electricity to the battery/electric motor which is then used to drive the rear wheels in the XC90. It's the same for pretty much every PHEV. Once battery hits 0%, it acts exactly like a traditional hybrid (gas/electric motors working together for total power output).

We own an x5 45e at home, it is the better car compared to an xc90 t8, we test drove an xc90 and it just doesn't drive as well as the bmw does, and in the bmw you will get an inline 6 what should be normal by an suv of this size. And at the end, an xc90 has almost the same interior as an v60 does. It just doesn't give you that premium feeling. and an extra, the bmw is faster on the autobahn because the electric engine keeps going as well. By the volvo xc90 the electric engine turns off at 180 km/h which is just a shame.

You fail to mention there is a difference in the x5 europe model vs the same us model. The x5 rates 54 miles on an electric charge. In the us its only 30 miles. Also the us version on petrol is 20 mile mpg while your is 25 mpg. Just saying

32.5 miles from a 24 kwh battery is rubbish, here are two reasons why: My current 330e has a 12 kwh battery and does about 24 miles real world, half the battery size but 3/4 of the range, I've had up to 34 miles on a good day and as low as 18 miles in bad conditions. My previous car was a 2014 Nissan Leaf also with a 24 kwh battery (yes I know it's very different but we're talking about efficiency) and that did a real world 100 miles range. I know the X5 is very nice, but it does 1.3 miles per kwh, while the 330e does 2.0 miles per kwh, and the Leaf did 4.1 miles per kwh. And when the battery runs out on the X5 I bet the mpg is shocking too.

X5 is a funny choice. You can get an X3 with pretty the same thing but pay quite less. If you need a 7-seater, get an X7. I don't get why anybody would want a X5.

The air con is only annoying on the XC if you don't know what you're doing! Takes no longer than a car with horrible buttons and dials everyhwere, also... the XC90 would already be cooled as I can control it from my phone!

So VW's was fined 800bn squarks for lying about its NOX emissions, but it's ok for 2.4ton BMW X5 to say it gets 240mpg. And be, somehow, cheaper to run than my real world 1.2ton Fiesta getting 51mpg? Am I missing something to government policy?
@Dyrck
@Dyrck 3 жыл бұрын
Companies don't claim anything themselves, they simply report the results of the mandated tests, however inaccurate the tests may be. VW were fined because they engineered the cars to recognise when they were being tested and adjust the performance to artificially improve their MPG for the duration of the test.
@pigeonpoo1823
@pigeonpoo1823 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dyrck we all know what the reasons are. But where vw cheated a bit on a test, all car manufacturers are now given the cheat codes (add half a ton of battery and motor) and told to make hay. Then our governments tax them like they're more efficient than a vw up!

Can't compare the comfort of Volvo XC 90 with R type and no air suspension option with the BMW X5 45E. It should be compared with T8 inscription with 4 corner air suspension and the bower and wilkins 1800 W sterio system is far superior to the 205 W BMW audio system. I drive over 50K/ year and driver's display is so overrated, I have over 10,000 hours of videos/audio and just use bluetooth for entertainment (including TV and sport broadcast) and google map...so, the car's display size is just a nuissance....it cost less than $10 for phone/pad holder....at any location in the vehicle.

yes let's compare the most expensive audio OPTION from volvo to the BASE audio from BMW ... that makes alot of sense. might aswell go for the Bowers and wilkins diamond audio system for the BMW. and yes the volvo screens are very laggy so they are a nuissance.

Let’s face it, a huge consideration will be image. On the one hand you have ‘class and sophistication’, the other you have ‘brash yob’! Now I’ve just px’d my diesel 69 reg XC90 for the new XC90 T8, so despite being an uncouth yob I can at least carry on pretending to possess the finer qualities of a typical Volvo driver.

The x5 interior is basically the same as a 3 series....... literally identical. Tor that price you kind of expect something more unique rather than just better quality materials. At least with the XC 90 there are some subtle difference to the S60 and S90.
