In this review, Jill Ciminillo checks out the ePower system in the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e as well as the available Extended Traffic Jam Assist. This 5-passenger SUV gets 30 miles of all-electric range and has some cool tech, but at Jill points out, there are a couple of petite person problems.

I’ve been driving a 2018 530e and my lease is up soon. I may get into one of these next. Something important to do is to use the navigation any time you go anywhere. The computer looks at where you are, where you’re headed, the elevation changes, and the traffic patterns between the two points and it will automatically select the most efficient driving mode throughout your trip. It’s so smart.

Jill, first time seeing your reviews. Good one on the 45e. I’ve had mine since mid January of this year and have 11,000 miles on it already. I have two adds to your comments. First for petite people, the air suspension allows you to easily lower the car by 1.6 inches. I do that every time before exiting so my wife doesn’t have to jump / climb into this great car. Another reason I bought it (out of so many reasons) is the ability to keep the AC running without also having a gas engine spewing fumes when leaving a passenger in the car while running into a store. That’s a BIG plus here in Texas. Again, great overview.

Agreed, Jill you should get a level 2 charger, it would help add a lot of detail on range, etc to your reviews, which everyone buying electric wants to know, and since virtually everything is going electric, it will help you a lot to grow the channel and get more cars to review

I suspect many new to PHEVs or pure EVs have the same confusion on charging times and the circuit needed to get the advertised rate. Easy enough to remedy, but there is a learning curve to owning and even driving these to maximize the benefits they provide.

Thanks for the review! For drivers in the north, like me in Boston, would the battery be a problem in the winter?

I don’t think so. Keeping in mind the battery is extra. The primary source of power is still gas.

It's not a twin turbo engine - It's BMW's "TwinPower Turbo". It's their marketing term for saying it has a twin-scroll turbocharger.

Is the UK/Europe version different? I’ve owned this car since January 2021. I use pure electric mode most days and rarely get less than 45 miles on battery power alone. The charging time with a 7kw home charger is 5-7 hours and with a 13amp household socket it is around 10-12 hours max. I set the in car charging rate to max (16amp) and it draws between 10amp and 16 amp depending on the charger. Range is also better (45-55 miles) on warmer days. So far I’ve done around 5650 miles and only used the petrol engine for 1050 of those miles. On a recent 120 mile journey using Adaptive mode and inputting the destination in the Satnav, it did 60 miles battery and 60 miles Petrol.
@jillciminillo
@jillciminillo 3 жыл бұрын
Likely similar. I was plugging into a regular wall jack, not a home charger. I think I was only at 6 amp (with charge rate set to max).
@jillciminillo

Btw 60 miles battery is amazing for a road trip.
@philhall01

@@jillciminillo it was good. The journey was a mixed road environment of motorway, country roads and town driving. I think there is a certain amount of recharging going on when using the petrol engine to help boost the range. I’ve found it to be an excellent all round car.

Battery has 24 KWh, US 17,06 KWh usable. In Europe BMW allow 21,6 KWh usable. I don’t know why.
