1:07 Correction - The shaft does not move forward, I meant to say a gear inside the engine pushed forward engaging with the front shaft.

I have a 2016 that recently started making a clanking noise. Thought it might be the clutch but it wasn’t. This might be my problem. Thanks for the video.

In my experience, typically it's the boots that goes bad. Typically the boots on the propeller shaft split and let dirt and moisture inside them. Which will cause rusting and other issues. Take it apart and you may just need to give it a good clean out, re-greasing and replace the boots.

Just to clarify, that shaft does not move forward when 4wd is engaged.

Shaft doesn't push forward to engage 4x4. A actuator on trans engages the 4x4. Looks like you need a new thru shaft. The ostacruiser mod prevents this from happening. You put stiff boot on both sides of small front drive shaft. This prevents any movement of it and it won't strip gears. I have this done on both my outlanders. The visco lock in these front diffs will also start going out and will make a clicking noise while in 4x4 sometimes when one wheel starts slipping in mud. My 1000xt started doing that and I fixed by installing a torque locker in front diff and I eliminated the visco lock. Sucks you broke teeth on the thru shaft. That's a big job to replace it.

Hey thanks for the insight. I'll admit, my explanation was poor when I recorded this initially. I ended up calling someone in to tear it down for me as at the time I didn't have the time to do the work on it. The damage actually ended up being a bent shaft. We stick to pure sand and it doesn't really ever get muddy in our area. Seems the machine at some point was involved in a front end collision and one of my other mechanics had done the work to replace the damaged parts from the accident. But at the time, the clicking/grinding hadn't manifested yet. I fully agree, putting a stiff boot on both the front and the rear is the way to go. We don't do it however since our equipment is used in the tourism industry and our turn around rate on reselling equipment is roughly 90-120 days. Honestly I miss the older models that didn't have the mechanisms that outlanders have these days. Was far easier back then.

Sorry to dig up a year old post but I’m trying to find more info on the ostracruiser mod and can’t. Any help you can give is appreciated.

The osta mod is just adding the stiffer boot to the front drive shaft. Put the same boot thats on the rear of front prop shaft on the front of front prop shaft and you have the ostacruiser mod. Won't let the front shaft move which eats up the teeth. Hope that helps you out. If not hit me up on a video on my channel and I'll get back to you.

My xmr 850 works good in 4 wheel drive at slow speeds but once you get on it, it seems like it’a trying to go in and out out of 4x4. Any advice is appreciated before I tear it apart

What does something like this cost to fix if you have a dealer do it? Replace all the parts with broken teeth?

No got probly 15,000 miles four rear driveshafts but never changed the front and it still works no problems but it eats the rear driveshaft in 1,000 miles everytime you ride it you grease the joints or they will burn up but that’s it ever still got it

You should be fine, they made changes a couple years ago and this shouldn't be an issue. But if you want to check, just grab the propeller shaft and try to wiggle it. If you have a lot of play in it, then I'd remove it.

@@Yukisho Ok well that’s a relief! Thanks a lot, I’ll definitely give that a check since it’s easy, very valuable video I appreciate it. Reason I even ran into your video is I noticed mine has a bit of a whine in 4x4 most noticeable on deceleration. Kind of like a wah wah wah noise, just noticed it this weekend when I tried the 4x4 as I’ve only had it 2 weeks and has just under 200km. Diff fluid is full and looks good, might get the dealers input anyway but was trying to see if other people had a noise similar. Because if it’s normal I don’t care but if the diff is on the way out then I want it replaced before I have issues.

2011 outlander 800 xmr clanks on low speeds up front once you pick up speed it slaps in and stops. Think that might be a boot or this?
@Yukisho
@Yukisho 2 жыл бұрын
It could be one of a number of things. Could be the propeller shaft if that model year came with one, but I believe they didn't. Could be a front half shaft/ujoint. Could even be a front differential problem. Try running the machine in both 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. See if there is any difference.

@@Yukisho so doesn’t matter if it’s 2 or 4, the front right shakes until a certain speed that makes like a snap noise then is totally fine at higher speeds. It’s weird to me.

how do you get that shaft off without removing diff?
@Yukisho
@Yukisho Жыл бұрын
If you mean the propeller shaft, you don't have to remove the differential. You just have to pop the bolts off to get a couple millimeters of wiggle room. Don't take the bolts off unless you have the machine on a lift or jack stands.
