This is a very well done in-depth comparison review. Even though the average American family only has 3.15 people in them everyone feels like they have to have an SUV. This is a shame because I feel like the offerings in the family sedan segment have never been better. I’m probably biased because I own a 2020 Accord EXL, but honestly you couldn’t go wrong with any of these family sedans. They are all packed with standard safety features whereas many of high end German luxury sedans force you to go up the trim range to get them. I was able to purchase my 2020 Accord EXL 2.0 for just under 30k before taxes and title. That is a lot of car for the money.
@Allcarseveryday
@Allcarseveryday 3 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree, but I am also probably biased towards sedans as a car enthusiast. My pick? A 2.0 Accord Sport with the manual! And the best part is it should work totally fine as one of two cars in a family.

Very nice comparison! I just came off lease on a blue 2019 Kia Optima SXL turbo. Expected Kia would offer a similarly equipped sedan but alas many of the options I enjoyed with the Optima are no longer available on the newer K5. Personally I think both Kia and Hyundai styling just blows the competition out of the water. Add to that the value they offer and it seems tough to pass up. I am now driving a black 2023 Sonata Limited and very impressed. I think the front end looks best on the darker colors and would like to see them maybe color match the grill and perhaps the other black details.

A heroic effort, my friend. I'm impressed. On the other hand, I'd renew a criticism of your approach I've made in some of your previous comparative reviews. The problem with your approach of comparing (in this case) the roughly comparable trims of various brands with no options ignores the fact that automakers have very different philosophies in terms of how they equip trim levels and include features as standard, optional, or even available for each trim. Here's an especially clear example of my point. Hyundai Sonata and KIA K5 are the most closely related midsize sedans available. The top trim KIA K5 GT with no options has an MSRP of $31,585 (including destination). The nearly identical Sonata N-Line has an MSRP of $34,305, a difference of over $2700 in the KIA's favor. The Sonata N-Line, however, has a variety of standard features missing on the K5 and virtually no important options even available. To be compare roughly equivalent models requires adding the "GT1" option package to the KIA at a price of $4000 that brings the total MSRP to $35,585. With that adjustment the Sonata has a $1280 MSRP advantage compared to the K5. Which offers a "better value proposition"; the K5 GT without the "GT1" package vs the N-Line Sonata with only standard features or the fully loaded K5 GT with its GT1 package vs the similarly equipped Sonata? The answer, of course, depends on a buyer's priorities. And none of this takes into account the fact that MSRPs are frequently an inaccurate metric compared to actual transaction prices with brand and dealer discounts or "market adjustment" second stickers, none of which can be considered in a comparative review. Comparisons of vehicles from different automakers is always complicated but an alternative method would involve setting an MSRP target and demonstrating what a purchaser might expect to buy for one vehicle vs another at that price point regardless of trim level and whether features were "standard" or "optional." That doesn't simplify the comparisons, of course, but it more closely mirrors the experience of a buyer with a particular budget.
@Allcarseveryday
@Allcarseveryday 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Again, you're right about the pricing models. In fact, I actually do try and tend to stick around a certain dollar amount (in this case it was about $30,000). But in the past (years up to and including 2019), I picked a price point and stuck right to it. I would include any and all features you got for that price. Unfortunately, this sometimes meant AWD would be on one car, or another would have a severely overmatched engine, etc (this was very prevalent in pick-up truck comparisons, but was still true for other segments). I received a ridiculous amount of backlash for doing my comparisons this way. My comments were full of people profusely upset that I was comparing a V6 to a V8, or that AWD was being compared to others that weren't (but had it available). My point was to show them that, 'Hey! You can get AWD on this vehicle for the same price as a FWD version of this one!' but I quickly learned this is not how people shop for cars. They first start with their budget, like I did. But they then pick the features they need/want in the vehicle, and compare those features at their respective prices. Someone who needs AWD because they live in the snowbelt isn't going to forgo that choice by instead opting for a leather interior in a similarly priced FWD competitor. So when I compare at a price point, and the prices align but the core vehicle attributes don't, that comparison is almost useless. Nowadays, I pick a general price target, and the trims that are actually designed to do battle with each other. I could potentially go look for an options package that would increase the price of some trims that are under my target price, but that would decrease my chances of finding that exact vehicle on dealer lots. Also, oftentimes there is only a maximum $2,000 or so spread between the competitive vehicles. Though that's a lot of cash, in the grand scheme of things I deem that close enough that most consumers would get the idea. Adding an options package could serve to dilute the value proposition of the vehicle as well (if you had a car with a great intrinsic value, but the options themselves are far too overpriced, like with almost every single Porsche vehicle for sale). Regardless, most people like the way I pick the trims and competitors versus how I did it before. I'm glad you're a loyal viewer and hope that this style isn't so off-putting you no longer enjoy the videos!
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 жыл бұрын
@@Allcarseveryday Not "off-putting" at all, my friend. As I said at the beginning of my comment, this comparison was "heroic." My central point is that eliminating individual options and option packages when comparing vehicles can result in a misleading perspective about the features and components available for a particular vehicle. The K5 GT vs Sonata N-Line is a particularly sharp example of that problem. For some reason many consumers seem to think that if a feature is "standard" they get it "free of charge" while they have to pay extra for an optional feature. That, of course, is nonsense. The price of every component whether "standard" or "optional" goes into the cost of building a vehicle. Getting a "standard" feature means cost cutting somewhere else. Personally, when shopping I usually compare top trim, fully loaded versions of vehicles. That gives me a clear idea of everything a manufacturer has to offer for a particular model. And in my experience it means a vehicle that holds its value better and reduces (but seldom eliminates) the price advantage I might have enjoyed if I had opted for a lower trim with fewer features. Others may well prefer a stripped (or lightly equipped) version of a more expensive brand for more money paid up front. Different strokes for different folks.

Thank you! I may do a follow-up with a Mazda6, especially since from a driving perspective I think it would challenge the Accord. Only reason it and some others (Legacy, Malibu etc) weren't in it was for brevity's sake. I was concerned with overwhelming people with an hour video, and as a result had to make a few decisions like that. That being said, I may re-evaluate some vehicles against the 6 sometime in the future!
@mrdirector61
@mrdirector61 3 жыл бұрын
@@Allcarseveryday I figured that was the reason. It'd be interesting to compare all the sedans with traditional transmissions (Mazda6, Camry, 2.0L Accord and either the Sonata or the K5 and possibly the Malibu-I think the higher/highest trim has one, but I'm not positive). And then another comparison on only sedans with CVT's.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 жыл бұрын
Another reason for excluding the Mazda6. Almost no one purchases the vehicle. Its 16,000 sales in the US in 2020 ranked at the bottom of all mainstream midsize sedans and was even outsold by nine luxury brands. Sales have dropped to half of what they were in only three years ago. Mazda promises a new generation "6" in 2022 or 2023 but its track record of overpromising and underdelivering as well as missing announced changes, sometimes by years means taking those promises with a very large grain of salt.

I drove a Camry SE and K5 Gt-Line. The Camry looks nice on the outside, but not inside, drove rougher, didn't have the low rev punch (n/a 4 cyl) and the transmission was a miss... At 70 mph it wouldnt stay in 8th, kept kicking down to 7th. Also it had that downshift one at a time issue when passing. Overall I wasn't impressed. The K5 however looks a lot more aggressive outside, clean and easy on the inside. Ride was a bit softer. Transmission didn't have any wonky issues with not hitting 8th, in fact it goes in at like 45ish mph. Also being that its got the small turbo motor with peak torque from 1500-4500 revs, it has good punch in normal driving. I agree the brakes don't have quite the feel an enthusiast desires, but they do the trick.

Altima had the worst infotainment by a lot, Camry was also not super fantastic. K5/Sonata had the best, followed closely by the Accord. I did an audio test in the value segment for each vehicle, but if I remember correctly I think I thought the Sonata's was the best overall (again followed closely by K5 and Accord, Camry's was also pretty good). That said, I am not an audiophile and am used to a 2010 Malibu's sound system so they all sounded pretty good to me 😂
