Honestly this is a very well rounded resin 3D printer and it does a great job printing small or large scale and fast. This is now my new go to resin printer.

I had this one on my watch list for months and it was never in stock. It was finally available and I had it in my cart, but the Anycubic Mono X 4K was on sale for $529. So I got that one instead since it has a bigger build volume. I have the Mars 2 and it is a good machine. Never had a problem with it but I wanted to go bigger and the Mono X filled that need. Only problem with going bigger is it creates a whole new batch of challenges when post processing prints!

@@GomeowCreations I know at the risk of sounding stupid, why not just make your own cheap one like I did for my tiny prints. A simple cardboard box, aluminum foil and UV blacklights from walmart and I mean, it could fit huge models. The wash and curing part is probably the easiest by hand. I have 2 large bowls when my prints are ready. One with warm water and the other with denatured alcohol. Give it a quick back and forth with a tooth brush and throw it in the box. Boom. Done.

I've got one of these and looking at your prints you seem to have two possible issues. I think your not getting the build plate zeroed property.. make sure you use the included card (the card is~0.5mm thick as normal paper is too thin) and press down firmly and ensure you tighten up the front build plate screw first then the side build plate screw. Both need done up pretty firm and IME the double sided build plate hanger gets in the way of doing up the RHS build plate bolt.. so the one sided hanger is something to try. You seem to be getting poor build plate adhesion as those prints are coming off ridiculously easy.. possibly the above, the resin or your first layers times are too short. I moved to a flexible build plate as my prints were so firmly attached (I mainly use water washable). Problems with layering could be too much adherence especially with large surface layers slices to the FEP considering the build area of a Saturn. I'd add a small amount of -Specialist Anti Friction DRY PTFE Lubricant to a shop towel and wipe the FEP with it and leave it to "dry" a couple of hours... redo it every 5-10 prints or so or post a good wash and clean of your FEP. Main issue with these printers going forward is they may get locked into using Chitubox support/slicer software and remember the Free version is pretty poor with the Pro version being $169 PER YEAR! not just a one off purchase. Chitu can't compete on features and performance so it's going down the locked in route :(. So this potentially kills future models Elegoo printers (and the others with Chitu control boards) as printers for home use if/when they lock their printers to Chitubox.
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 жыл бұрын
What are you using right now for a slicer? According to what I have seen from Chitubox they said they will be putting out the SDK in August for the file format so other companies could use it and will include 1 year of Pro with all the printers to cover that time period. at least that is what they are doing with the MARS 3. That should mean that other slicers could used it and it will be supported on the printers, unless I'm wrong. Don't get me wrong I don't like paying a subscription for software either and I would much rather just buy it once and be done but that isn't really up to me how they do it. I have used the Free software for a long time and I didn't have problems with it. I have also used Lychee. I will pay for things like this if I need them and if it is for work seeing that I'm going to be making money by using it and if it saves me time then it's normally worth it. I did have to update the firmware on the Saturn to use the Pro version and wanted to test if the rumors of it locking you into only the Pro version was true. I sliced the same Mando file using the Free version and Lychee and both worked as normal. I will be getting the Mar 3 in the next couple days and I will try the same thing out so see if it has changed. As for your suggestions, thanks for that. I really just think it comes down to setting and the resin. I have used other resins on it with no problems so I just need to play with those setting more. Also this plant based resin is very soft so I might have something to do with it.
@RocketMagnetUK
@RocketMagnetUK 3 жыл бұрын
@@GomeowCreations The rumour is you can use another competing Slicer but will still need to import the resultant file into Chitubox... to convert it to a *.CTB so you will still need Chitubox as a middleware on new printers?. Do you really expect them to improve the free version or not remove features over time? I don't understand Elegoo, they already sell Arduino boards etc which are the basis for FDM printer control boards and are significantly more complex to control so why use Chitu boards? .. A Resin printer is only 1 Axis (Z), sequential images to an LCD and a timer for the UV lights that's it.... I'd say this is trivial in comparison to say a Delta FDM. If they do lock people to Chitu then it will be very cheap to replace the control board with a Mega (Overkill) or even go massive overkill with a Raspberry Pi and convert your printer to open source.. as it should be IMO. I'm getting good results with the Water Washable.. it's a bit brittle however.

Elegoo products are a victim of their own success. The reason their stuff was unavailable for such a long time was that their entire product line sold out worldwide. And of course, COVID didn't help things. The second batch of Saturns are also selling pretty quickly, I believe. You can't expect them to hold a bunch of LCD beds as replacements when the beds could go into full printers that people are lining up to buy. You could buy a more readily available large print bed printer, such as the Mono X. But then ask yourself why the Saturn is such a sought after printer, and why the Mono X is available everywhere. I believe this is just an issue with the Saturn, as I got a second print bed for my Mars Pro 2 easily on Amazon.

do you have resin materials comparable to pla or petg ?
@crhkrebs
@crhkrebs 3 жыл бұрын
Thomas they are totally different things. PLA and PETG are thermoplastic resins that need heat to be molded and then harden when cooled. SLA resins are photochemically reactive solutions of resin monomers and oligomers. When light strikes them, they form long polymer chains and harden in that fashion. The typical SLA resin is toxic, however much more user and environmentally safe plant based resins are becoming more popular. They also have very little smell and can simply be rinsed under the tap. I have a septic system so I still use a Wash and Cure unit and control the water used for cleaning. In an ideal world, one would have both an FDM and SLA printer, as they both have complimentary strengths and weaknesses.

Elegoo claims it to be biodegradable on it's website, but so does Anycubic's website for their soy-based resin. According to a deep-dive done by Goobertown Hobbies (who has a Ph.D in chemistry), it may be technically biodegradable, but not in the way we typically think about it. The plant-based resin is still resin and shouldn't be put into a home composter nor spread across your garden. It is something that only specific composting facilities can deal with and you'd have to contact your local yard debris collection company to see if they are willing to accept the cured resin. A step in the right direction, but not the full journey to a truly home-compostable 3D printable material. If you want to know more, look for Goobertown's video titled "Ph.D. Chemist Explains 3D Printer Resin". He explains a lot of stuff in the first several minutes (which are worth watching), but the specific information regarding Anycubic's plant-based resin starts exactly 10 minutes in.

The Elegoo Mercury X wash and cure system with fit the Saturn's full build plate and anything you can print on it. The one I show in the video can fit prints from the Saturn but they have to be off the build plate. I'm finishing up a video all about that wash and cure setup along with the new Mars 3 4k and I type this so that should be out tomorrow. 😁👍

What layer heights were you printing at, if I may ask? I only have an FDM printer, which I can get down to 50 micron layers, but I thought that it was typically rare to even see the layers on resin printers. Overall, though, looks like a good printer for the money! I would probably get it (or a similar one) if I had the space. Also, do you know if you needed supports for the Mando statue? I did the same one on my FDM with no supports (if it's the model I'm thinking of, it's an absolute masterclass in modeling for the purposes of prointing), but maybe resin doesn't handle overhangs as well as FDM.
@GomeowCreations
@GomeowCreations 3 жыл бұрын
This was printed at 0.05mm layers but you can go down to 0.02mm-0.01mm if you like. It will just take a lot longer. There is also anti-aliasing that you can use to make everything blend together. In my prints I didn't use that so you can see some hard lines. So it technically didn't need the supports but I wanted to see how the resin would work with them. I also had a limited amount of this resin to test and I didn't want to risk a failed print.

Yeah I get that comment a lot about my review videos and it's understandable. I do make sure to let people know that I got it from them for free but everything I say are my own thoughts. When I got this printer I didn't use any other printers with this print volume. I looked at the other option similar to it and all the specs are just about the same but the Saturn was about $100 cheaper. If you want to get a better feel for my reviews check out my cyberpunk looking printer and other FDM printer to see how I feel about them even though they are all gifted to me from the companies. 😁👍

The Saturn is a great printer for the price. Along with the Mars 2 it's definitely the best MSLA printer for the hobbyist on a budget. I personally prefer the Prusa SL1-S as my overall top pick for desktop sized MLSA printers due to its reliability, consistency and rugged build quality (including that beautiful ball screw for the Z axis) which is important for my business, but it's a different beast in a completely different price range with added features and quality of life improvements. It's like comparing a $15k Kia to a $75k Volvo, both can take you to the same destinations but one is better than the other.

@@TommiHonkonen LOL funny, but no. I've had 2 KIAs in the past, both fell apart right after the warranty expired. They're junk. Prusa has amazing customer support and the build quality of the SL1S is like a tank, not like the cheap $250 printers out there. You get what you pay for. Sure print quality of the cheaper printers /can/ be the same as the SL1S or Form 3 after some tinkering but reliability, consistency, longevity and customer support are just as important things to consider and the cheaper printers just don't quite have that.

@@agentcee688 the issue is we are talking about a 1,500 price difference I don't know through the life span of these printers that the SL1S would pay itself off in usage

@agentcee688 2 жыл бұрын
@@archemides1517 You get better print quality and amazing customer support with the SL1S. The ballscrew and heavier build quality in conjunction with the tilting vat allows it to produce very clean and detailed prints that surpass cheaper printers with 4k screens. Now I'm not saying the cheaper printers suck, they produce great results but they have their shortcomings and most of them are not suited in a business or commercial environment. With Prusa it just works with zero fuss and everything from the hardware and software is well thought out and laid out. I don't have time to tinker around with cheaper machines or worry about their long term reliability.

Regarding the Saturn's price...check Amazon several times during the day and when you see it for $499 or less, buy it immediately. Over the course of 24 hours I've watched the price go from $799 down to $499, back up to $769, and then for about fifteen minutes, it was back to $499. When it was $769, it was showing out of stock, but the other times it was in stock. Just be patient, know what you're willing to pay, and then don't hesitate when you see it for the price you want.

I think it's around the same price. Also when you do resin prints you can make them hollow and drain the resin out. This will save a lot of resin.
